Here's how dumb the place where I work is...
Apr 8, 2013, 2:24 PM

|
just got called into my boss's office for the second time in the last couple of months because somebody told him to make sure I wasn't wearing jeans, because I'd have to be sent home if I was. Apparently there are some people in the office who consider themselves the clothes police, and they can't tell the difference between blue chinos and blue jeans. Morons.

I'm getting hassled, but other people are walking around looking like slobs with their shirts untucked and with tennis shoes on. Freaking midwesterners.
And this was reported to my boss by his boss, so he really can't do anything about it. He did say it was "absurd."

had you said Rhoads Scholar, I might have been impressed. But anyone willing to fork over the cash can be a part of that program, hardly an exclusive group.
Btw, Have you ever sat with a director and pre-vized a chase sequence for a Die-hard Movie?

and I am very impressed that Cm attended the University of Chicago, he is a very smart guy. My original point is that he may be out of place. I have worked in enough hostile corporate environments to know when I am swimming upstream, and that was never a knock on my abilities or me personally. it is what it is.

Buy non-iron Brook Bros shirts. Cost just a little more, but I have some that have been around for 8 years or so. No ironing.

and that could mean just looking traditionally sharp, or wearing something that will make you stick out like bright pants or an interesting looking tie. I also think women tend to notice a guy who dresses well, but who doesn't look like he puts too much thought into what he's wearing. It makes you seem more adult and less like the slob who just rolled out of bed. There's sort of a peacock effect. Then again, you can only polish a turd so much.

"business casual" on Mo. and Fri, ties from Tues- Thurs
Apr 8, 2013, 2:48 PM
[ in reply to It should be every Americans right to wear whatever they ] |

I really don't mind though, as I actually like looking sharp. And, of course, midwesterners don't actually seem to know that business casual doesn't really mean a collared shirt and pants (other than jeans), but I'll take it.
When I worked in DC we had to wear jackets and ties whenever Congress was voting, but if they weren't voting it was pretty much anything goes (with the exception of shorts).

Apr 8, 2013, 2:52 PM

come up with, I'm not sure why you'd want a ready to go noose attached to your neck all day. I'm business casual, I usually wear nice dress pants and a button down, and I feel like I look just as nice as somebody with a suit on. Yours doesn't sound too bad, I'm not sure I could work somewhere that required a suit and tie or anything like that. I'm not going to spend my life uncomfortable.

because you can pretty much wear the same suit and shirt color combo, but if you switch ties it's like a whole different outfit.
I think ties were originally part of military regalia, but became fashionable when the French saw the cravats that the Croation army was wearing and brought the style back to France. Why they've hung on for so long, I don't know, but I do think they make men's dress clothing a little more interesting.

I could live my life in a bathing suit and cut off and be perfectly happy...and I did pretty much throughout college.

and it might pass in places where you either don't want to stick out with how you dress or where being showy in dress is considered rude. But I've kind of realized, as I've gotten further from college, that one thing a guy can do to distinguish himself is to dress well.

I also think that depends on where you live and what

industry you're in. If I went to 90% of my customers with a suit and tie on, they'd be turned off. Likewise, in Chicago the way you dress probably has more of a bearing on your life that it does in South Carolina. City people are more into fashion IMO. Most people around here aren't going to pick out the fact that you're wearing some designer loafers or whatever, whereas that's probably more identifiable in a bigger city.

I worked in an architecture office years ago

and the dress code was shirt and tie all week and business casual on Friday.
I never understood why people who stared at a computer screen needed to dress up every day for the people around them.

more presentable if they were allowed to dress more casual. What is worse, a nice polo shirt or a short sleeved dress #### with the dude is putting the buttons through a stress test and an out of stile tie?

You'd see dudes who were wearing worn out short sleeve button downs and a big fat tie, or ring around the collar dress shirts that should have been tossed months ago with ugly, stained out of date ties.
You're right; had they been allowed to wear nice pants and a polo style shirt, they probably would have looked nicer.

this person? Dress code isn't something that should fall under whistle blower protection. If I am a manager, I want my people trying to work together to impress me, not be a bunch of tattletales.

blue chinos are people over 60 or plumbers who can't wear khakis because the sh## stains would show up all over their pant legs.
