Not taking WVU was a crushing mistake

May 18, 2012, 7:53 AM

You have to think even Swofford realizes this now. Maybe it wouldn't have changed the TV contract much, but just the fact that it would have improved both football perception as a whole and would have shown that the ACC was serious about improving in football would probably have eased some of FSU/Clem concerns about long term football viability in the ACC.

And by having WVU it made it easier for the Big 12 to court (potentially) FSU and Clem since WVU broke the seal on eastward expansion by the BIg 12

In any event, it may still not have been enough, but would certainly have helped the ACC.

Despite the recent headlines & academics: WVU & PSU

would have added some punch to both FB & BB, plus made the Pittsburgh & Syracuse additions a little more logical.

BASKETBALL: East Regional; Last-Second Shot Puts UConn in the Clear

By MALCOLM MORAN, Special to The New York Times
Published: March 23, 1990

The people in the stands in blue and white, the ones who had gone along on Connecticut's unforgettable ride, were standing numbly, arms at their sides. Connecticut's pressers had been pressed. A 19-point second half lead over the Clemson Tigers had become a nightmarish 1-point deficit.

With one second left on the scoreboard clock and the Huskies 94 feet from hope, Tate George, their senior guard, thought about what now seemed to be his final college game.

''I realized, maybe for the first time, my career could be coming to an end,'' he said.

A Shot From the Right

Then suddenly, remarkably, George was taking a soft, length-of-the-court pass from his teammate Scott Burrell. Sean Tyson, a Clemson forward, did as he had been told and backed off to avoid a decisive foul. And George turned toward the basket 16 feet away, squared himself from near the right corner, and took the shot that would lift the Huskies to their 31st and most improbable victory of the season.

Well thanks a lot for reminding me of that debacle!

That was the last time I bet on Clemson to win a basketball game.

into the ACC HOF just because of that shot. It's part of the negotiations...

"As a member of the ACC, Tate will be put into the HOF on your first day as a member of the conference. Just because I hate Clemson that much."

Clock should have started when D Davis tipped it on the inbounds, which means no Tate George basket. Total bs and I'll never forget Tyson's part either. :(

Penn State should have been the first school in the ACC. Ex conference commissioner Gene Corrigan (in 1989) did not push hard enough for Penn State. Dumb move on the ACC's part. Image adding Penn State in 89, FSU in 1991, Miami and Va tech in 1992, but we did not do it; after promising FSU that we would bring the others in the following year. Think where the ACC would have been had we followed through with this. The ACC has screwed the football schools for years and nobody will stand up and fight back.

There is nothing logical about Syracuse or Pitt.***

I don't think...

May 18, 2012, 9:03 AM

it was as much as an ACC issue with WVU as it was a UV and VTech issue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd always heard that they weren't an academic fit.

May 18, 2012, 9:26 AM

Which is a shame.

Not that it's false...WVU would be the worst school in the ACC, academically. And it's not that I think we shouldn't consider it, but only to a degree. WVU is a mediocre public school, but it's a major university as well. And the geographic fit was too good. If we take them instead of Syracuse, we have an automatic, fantastic rival with Pitt, VT and Maryland. Good football and basketball. I think it was a miss. Not because the ACC may now disintegrate...just because they would have been a good fit for the conference.

Big East didn't want them

May 18, 2012, 9:43 AM

The Big East didn't even put up a fight to keep WVU, so I don't think they're that great of a program. Poor academics, no TV market, Morgantown is a dump, yeah BIG 12 only took them because they were desperate. I kinda see the same deal with FSU. This isn't the powerhouse FSU of the 90's. This is FSU that is somehow bleeding cash and losing money in their athletics department. Sure the B12 wants them, because they'll take whoever they can get. I agree that this is a crappy TV deal and Swofford needs to go, but the BIG 12 is no more stable than when 4 of their teams bolted. We shouldn't follow FSU's lead because FSU is in no way a model of how to run your program.

Re: Big East didn't want them

The ACC should have taken WVA, because this is about ESPN not the conference. They want to see good football teams playing on Saturday's and the ACC needs more football schools.

Re: Big East didn't want them

College football goes in cycles. In the last 15 years, the SEC has been up and down, the PAC 10/12 has been up and down, the BIG 10 & 12 have been up and down. The ACC has mostly been down but that's because we have a total moron running the show. I think more of the conference is willing to admit that now. Doesn't mean this is a bad conference and always will be. Just needs new leadership.
