rankings. I honestly did not know that UTSA (WHO?) was ranked, much less that they are 9-0. Quite an accomplishment for a bunch that has been a standard Pigskin Prophet joke like, forever.
Elsewhere, pretty much "The Usual Suspects" in the Top 4, except Oregon holds down what probably would have been our customary spot about now.
This year, I see the huge "cliff" dropoff being between the Top Two and everyone else, as opposed to the Top Three and everyone else in recent times.

I would say big dropoff after Georgia. Alabama is nowhere near as good as usual and hasn't shown to be any better than Ohio State, Oregon or Michigan.

Not so slow! Bama did look uncharacteristically human

against Bimbo's Boys. You had to know that sooner or later the Law of Averages said SOME former assistant was going to beat Saban, it just so happened to be Bimbo. But, since that early season loss, Bama is rounding into form more each week, and if they played A&M again right now, I think they would boat race them.
The great news is, we don't have to argue amongst ourselves, because Bama vs Georgia is going to happen.
Then, we will get to see if Georgia has enough of an athletic superiority (I say no) to overcome Kirby, who will shirley be Kirbying in that game.
Add to the fact that Bama needs to be the winner in that game to pretty much assure two SEC teams into the playoffs, and you could almost see Jawja taking a dive, because "It just means more" for the SEC to get two teams in. Other than pride and not having a shiny SEC Championship trophy, a loss there would not really affect Jawja's chance of winning it all. It would just mean that the rankings would miraculously turn out to not have a Bama / Jawja rematch unless they both made it to the National Championship Game.

That's why any conference championship game, should be a play in game. With only two games to go, we already know the winner between the two.
To further cement this point, all conferences should eliminate divisions, ala the Big 12. Two best teams, regardless of division should determine the conference championship.

Alabama should be given as many chances as they need to win it all. Losing the conference championship game, not even being in the conference championship game, whatever - it doesn’t matter. Put them in. It’s only fair.
