my understanding is they did not get along and Koenning felt slighted when he was not promoted. He has some very Good Defenses when he was here. I have no idea what happened at UNC, they were just awful.

Not really true. VK gets a bad rap for some reason, but

his defenses were not that bad. Bend don't break implies giving up a lot of yards, but not a lot of points, however Vic's defenses didn't even give up a lot of yards.
2005 - 30th in total defense, 13th in scoring 2006 - 12th in total defense, 15th in scoring 2007 - 6th in total defense, 10th in scoring 2008 - 17th in total defense, 10th in scoring
Soo yeah. What was so bad about Koenning again??

I think what people are complaining about is that it seemed like we weren't great on third down and didn't get a ton of sacks. It wasn't the attack-style defense that Venables brings.
Like you said, though, there isn't much you can really complain about with Koenning's defenses at Clemson, which is why it was a surprise that he couldn't do much at UNC.

But he was a good DC while he was here. I don't know why people need to pretend that all of our past coaches sucked.

unc had a defensive coordinator??? wait.....

unc had a DEFENSE????
If the tarholes had an ounce of intent of "doing things the right way--as opposed to the carolina way", they'd take this opportunity their poor season presents and decline a bowl invitation just to show a slight amount of remorse for the decades of blatant cheating.....much like Miami declined a couple of bowls while they awaited NCAA adjudication.
Instead, they've opted to see if the NCAA will avoid further embarrassment and do nothing...or next to nothing....cuz they know even if further penalties are forthcoming, they'll have the ACC Commissioner make the trip to Indy again to plead the tarhole case for continued leniency.
