Tampering

UConn coach Jim Mora plans to "pursue all avenues" against teams that tamper with Huskies players, warning such teams to "think hard before you tamper with our players."

Mora posted on social media Monday, hours before star defensive lineman Pryce Yates re-entered the transfer portal. Yates, a three-year starter with 29.5 career tackles for loss, initially entered the portal Dec. 13 before withdrawing Dec. 21 and posting a social media graphic that indicated his intention to return for the 2025 season.

Yates, a redshirt junior from San Antonio, Texas, earned defensive MVP honors Saturday in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl, recording a sack and three tackles for loss in UConn's 27-14 win against North Carolina. Yates led UConn with 14 tackles for loss in 2023 and had 12.5 career sacks, including 3.5 this season despite being limited to seven games because of injury.

"A simple note to the schools and coaches that have blatantly broken @NCAAFootball rules by tampering with our players in the last 24 hours," Mora wrote Monday on X. "We do know who you are, we will pursue all avenues to hold you accountable. We are excited that we've built a program where coaches have to cheat to beat us and we will protect that program. Think hard before you tamper with our players."

Mora later wrote in response to a post that he doesn't know how to fix the tampering issue in college football, but that "we will expose any program and coach that violates" NCAA rules. He added: "I'm 100 percent against grown men cheating the rules and teaching players horrible life lessons."

Mora guided UConn to a 9-4 record this season, the team's first winning season since 2010 and its most wins since 2007.

Clout has nothing to do with it. If a law is a law and it is broken, the penalty is the key, not the person who was wronged. The big question is, are there any possible penalties and who enforces them? I think what Coach Mora is saying is, would a Coach really want the bad publicity of being called out for breaking the rules? Of course, the other problem, unless you have a recording, is would a coach really want to cross the blue line and accuse a fellow coach with no evidence? Complicated situation for sure.

The NCAA has lost every case when anyone with a spine has challenged any of their rules in court.

The tampering rule seems equally vulnerable on antitrust grounds.

No one has been shy about suing the NCAA. The lawyers in the House case are going to make out like bandits. The State AGa in the Tennessee and Ohio cases had nothing to lose. They get their salaries win or lose...and they won.

Corporate headhunting is completely legal. How is offering a competitor in college sports any different?

The student athletes are not employee, thus the employer/employee rules don't apply. There are some really good attorneys who could find a way to make this tampering into a very costly harmful action against the person or persons causing the harmful actions.. You would not be suing the NCAA, you would be suing THE individuals including Coach C. M. Cheat, his direct Supervisor, the University President, the BOT, AND THE UNIVERSITY. The coach or who ever was doing the tampering would be immediately thrown under the bus by the AD, PRESIDENT, BOT, AND THE JANITOR. NONE WOULD WANT TO BE A PART OF THE LAWSUIT AND WOULD ASSERT THAT THE COACH WAS VIOLATING UNIVERSITY POLICY AND RULES and was taking actions not an official part of his duties. That always leaves one to be hung out to dry. Tie a coach up in a big law suit asking for millions of dollars in lost revenue and damages as well as punitive damages and this chit will immediately cease.

Shirley, Uconn has at least one smart ambulance chasing attorney who wants to make a name for himself among his shyster buddies and law professors.

Probably won't wash.

Because that "harm" is based on NCAA rules.
Those rules harm the athletes that want to move.
If suits are based on "harm", those athletes would seem to have a pretty good cause for action against the NCAA, the schools, the coaches, whomever. Limiting when athletes can be contacted can deny them better NIL deals, and that is direct financial harm.

There are a lot more athletes that want to transfer for better NIL than there are schools. Ergo, that has the potential to overwhelm the schools and the NCAA with even more lawsuits than what they're facing now.

I'm thinking there ought to be a payment made to the original school by a program that accepts a transferee...say, a million dollars, for the first program's efforts to recruit, train, equip blah blah blah the athlete, the cost of which surely isn't chicken feed. Restricting sby part of athlete movement including "how they can be contacted" is clearly anticompetitive.

Now you can pull out your appeal to outliers example from prior to this football season, from a small school, that has not effect on the NCAA nit currently trying to go after anyone else for tampering.

Again you continue to introduce assumed facts, instead of what they are which are your opinions, assumptions and misunderstandings

"Yeah, and that's why the NCAA is no longer even pretending to enforce that rule." - Show the evidence that they aren't. You can't know that

"They know they're likely to lose if that rule goes to court, just like the rest." - Another assumption where you are making statements for others

"And yes, the rule is clearly anticompetitive. Restricting sby part of athlete movement including "how they can be contacted" is clearly anticompetitive" - That isn't CLEARLY anti-competitive, again that is your opinion based on nothing other than you saying it is. You've substantiated absolutely nothing. The "how" component is that the school employee must obtain authorization to make contact. That isn't even a real restriction, its a step in a process

"Now you can pull out your appeal to outliers example from prior to this football season, from a small school, that has not effect on the NCAA nit currently trying to go after anyone else for tampering." - Even one example completely negates your first statement, despite your objections and attempts to marginalize it

We are still awaiting evidence that the tampering bylaws restrict the student athletes movement or value. You should try empirical evidence

Embarrassing the NCAA and, in effect, calling out the ‘superior’ programs for ‘having to resort to cheating to win’ also embarrasses the rich / cheating programs.

I can’t wait for the excuses that the SEC and their propagandists in ESPN cough up. Disney Corp’s media business may decide that ESPN’s Paul Slimebum may not be up to it. Will Disney summon ABC News runt ‘Furious George’ Stephanapolous to carry Slimebum’s water?
