ESPN analyst says Lawrence in a league of his own heading into 2019

Trevor Lawrence took the college football world by storm last season and expectations are through the roof in 2019. Wherever there is talk of Lawrence, comparisons to current and former quarterbacks pop up, but one college football analyst thinks Lawrence is in a league of his own. Full Story »

Totally agree. Never saw anything similar between Luck and Lawrence. Probably more like an extremely accurate Cam Newton than anything else.

I maybe wrong and you guys will have to answer for yourself, and I'm sure you will cut my tongue out if you believe that I'm totally wrong but, and please don't take it the wrong bc there isn't a wrong way intended bc he is so far one of, if not the best college QB I've ever seen, and I have given top praises to a few, and Luck is one of them but again, it do seem to me that he has looked at his receivers that he was wanting to throw to just bit to long. I think we call that looking down your receiver to long. Like I said, I maybe wrong, and it just may look that way to me, but has anybody else seen that with Trevor any last season? If you don't think that he sometimes look down his receivers, I will gladly accept your opinion, and actually be glad that I'm wrong, but that's what I've thought I've seen at times. What do you think?

I’ve seen him sometimes lock in on a receiver but I think he is just waiting to see if he gets open. If the receiver doesn’t get free he seems to move on in his progression or scramble still looking downfield. What I haven’t seen is him lock in on a receiver and then force a throw that maybe he shouldn’t have made. With our talent at WR I think this is a good thing because it gives the receiver time to come out of his break. And the speed with which Trevor delivers the ball allows him more time to do this than most QBs.

I agree. I've definitely seen him lock in on an receiver, but not really telegraph where he's going, and then make a bad throw where a defender can break on the ball.

It seems like if he identifies a mismatch pre-snap, he'll then watch to see if that mismatch develops into an opportunity to take advantage. If it doesn't develop, he moves on to the next read. He's also done a great job of looking off a safety and then hitting someone in that void, so I think it depends on what he sees pre-snap, and what the playcall is.

I think this year we'll see him understanding and reading the defenses even better, which will help him with staring a guy down.

That is the thing that helps to make Trevor the QB that he is, we never see him trying force a pass that would be hard to complete!!!

I don't think he's "looking down his receiver" too long. He may lock in, but many of his throws are before the WR makes their cut/break. He puts it right where he knows they are going to be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He occasionally does this

TL is always looking to improve, so I'm sure he knows it and will try to avoid in the future.

Oh yeah? Then why did ESPN rank Fields as better QB in 2018?

Jul 23, 2019, 9:13 AM

Just sayin'.

Re: Oh yeah? Then why did ESPN rank Fields as better QB in 2018?

Jul 23, 2019, 9:29 AM

Isn't it obvious? He committed to Clemson! Remember ESPN had him ranked #1 overall until he picked us... on a side note, I'm pretty sure they had XT #1 overall also just before he pulled the trigger too. Also weren't Brian Bresse and DJ #1 at some point?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ignore ESPN's rankings...they're trash

Comments by guys in the know, like Luginbill, carry more weight, but beyond that, other sites do a better job. Of course, the only 'site' that really matters is that of the Tiger staff.

can we let the kid play in more than 1 full season before labeling him NFL HOF worthy, sheesh

What you're accusing folks of labeling him. In fact, you came closest via your admonishment. The rest were discussing flaws, frankly...to the best of their arm-chair abilities.

The only thing I MIGHT say negatively.....

Jul 23, 2019, 11:20 AM

... is that while I agree with Lugs that he is a great runner, I haven't seen him be a great scrambler. When he gets sacked, it has been in the pocket. So not sure if he has the ability to scramble. Certainly, when he's chosen to run it, the boy can fly. Heck, his stride is a mile long!

All I know is I’m super glad he is ours. He is a difference maker extraordinaire, and he seems to bring out the best in all those around him.

That's cool for him to say, but who needs a talking head to tell them that this Lawrence kid is special.

I've been following recruiting seriously since 1974, yes I am old, and I've seen tape of all the great ones, or in person. Or, whatever. I used to make my own recruiting lists both nationally and in my own state. He's the best high school QB I have ever seen and his potential is off the charts. The kid is amazing and it's easy to see why good QBs on the roster who were ranked as the top in the country the previous season transferred out.
He was the best HS QB I have ever seen and then the best freshman college QB I have ever seen. Alabama fans say he was lucky and he was throwing 50/50 balls but most of them have the brains of Forrest Gump. This kid is phenomenal.

Who was the receiver on the 3rd down throw that Luginbill mentions? I am guessing it was the Q3 Ross TD.

I have never seen a QB have a better two-game performance than that of Lawrence in the ND and Bama games. The gravity of those two games could have crushed a normal QB. His receivers, running backs and OL had significant impact on his success. One of the sideline reporters on ESPN said that he knew of Trevor's skill level, but the INTANGIBLES demonstrated in that game was extraordinary. Trevor and his explosive buddies will be fun to watch this coming year ... and the year after ... and maybe the year after that!
