There should be 64 FBS teams split into 8 conferences. 7 conference games each. 5 non-con games (All from 64 team FBS)
Worst team of every conference gets relegated and the lower league conference champ gets promoted. 24 team playoff, with 8 byes All conference champs get byes, seeding for champs based on tiebreaker as follows... first overall record, then head to head, then record of opponents, then common opponents, then committee. Next 16 teams are chosen by 17 person committee, 2 from each conference and one elected FBS commissioner.
Here are the regional conferences
Pacific Washington Washington State Oregon Oregon St UCLA USC Stanford Cal
Western Arizona Arizona St Utah BYU Colorado Boise St NDSU Nebraska
Midwest Iowa Iowa St Oklahoma St Oklahoma Texas Texas A&M TCU Kansas St
River Delta Arkansas LSU Ole Miss Miss St Alabama Auburn Mizzou Memphis?
Deep South UGA GT Clemson SC FSU Florida Miami Tennessee
Appalachian App St. Pitt Kentucky West Virginia Louisville Indiana Cincinatti Virginia Tech
Great Lakes Ohio State Michigan Wisconsin Illinois Notre Dame Michigan St Penn St Minnesota
Atlantic NC State UNC UVA Maryland Syracuse Boston College Duke Winner of last year's Army Navy game (Idk I ran out of options)
So Clemson's schedule would be something like... UNC UGA GT FSU NC State Florida Miami Arkansas Tennessee UCLA Boise St SC
Yikes

Not unless there is way more money to be made. And with this, there is.

If you eliminate powder puff games and every single game is relevant then the money spent has a better ROI. It would be relentless competition like the NFL.
It's kinda like mercantilism back during the age of colonialism. States restricted trade and prioritized holding on to what they had and limiting what their rivals could get. But (kinda) free-market capitalism eventually blew that own system away and the profits every country (well, Europe) made increased 100-fold.

Yeah I agree. But as others have said, tv contracts and unfortunately several different networks.
That said, look at the money this would potentially bring in. Every week you'd have all kinds of big matchups. The only way I see this working is you would have 2 conferences sec and b1g each with 32 teams... but it'd solve a lot of discrepancy.

Did you intentionally omit Vanderbilt? Vandy needs to be included. Any team that beats Bama gets a lifetime pass. OK, maybe 10 years.

and if it did, what lower conferences are you referring to? Ones that you haven't outlined here (ie, the rest of FBS teams)?
Neat scenario regardless. I love the concept in that it would re-regionalize college football, which would be great for fans.

had a championship for their league (like FCS but higher up) and also a shot at upward mobility.
As a Georgia Southern alum (in addition to my Clemson degree) I can tell you that football was way more fun in FCS. Didn't feel less important when you are in that league. Same with high school classifications.
There are 80 teams who are just hopeless to win a natty every year. It's too much.

not old school. The only thing you are likely considering old school is smaller conferences that are based on geography. That is one element from the past that is superior. And the newer elements are superior to most of the old ones.
My proposal is far more of a radical overhaul than awkwardly cramming more teams into old conferences to simply inflate old TV contract arrangements.

You landed on a really awkward number of teams, with the conferences being pretty unbalanced especially considering you want relegation. If you look at the teams this year, I would take the 7th place team in the Deep South (Florida) to win the Appalachian or Atlantic. You shouldn't have a team close to relegation that could easily make the playoffs. Also the Western Conference is forced to include two teams who should not be included in a "Super League" and Nebraska who needs to be in the Midwest.
In my opinion you need to decrease your number of conferences (Not enough depth out west) and either expand it to approx. 75 teams so everyone is included and there are bad teams in every conference or reduce it down to approx. 50 so it is only power houses

Programs ebb and flow over time. Geography doesn't. Some counterpoints...

1. With 5 OOC games every year there is plenty of opportunity to show what you can do if you are stuck in a weak conference.
2. There are more at large spots available in a 24 team playoff than there are total spots in today's playoff. So if you are stuck in a hard league you have two options. Win all your games or win enough to make it obvious you belong in the remaining 16.
3. Conferences are meaningless right now. The number of teams I mentioned does two things. It guarantees that your local rivals are playing you every single year. It also gives more non-conference marquee games than college football has ever had before.
4. In order to be relegated you have to be the worst team out of 8. And the next year, you can win your way back in if you deserve it.
5. Part of the reason that the SEC dominates is that it got lucky that it became dominant at the right time. Now it is hoarding the benefits it got from that lucky timing. With conferences split like this, you will see a more natural ebb and flow of dominant teams from other parts of the country like it was for a 100 years before the 2010's
6. I think 64 is better than 50 because we always have surprises and Cinderella stories are still a great part of sports.
Anyways I enjoy the debate on the subject.

Man I wish something would change and it well could but not sure with the contracts in place how all that could be accomplished. I can see the SEC and B1G saying the heck with everyone else and they would still be well off with ESPN and Fox already in place. B1G has the old SEC slot on CBS as well.
Guessing they could fire up Raycom to broadcast the ACC and Big 12.
BTW great post and food for thought.

1. We currently have 4 OOC games so increasing it by 1 will not greatly increase opportunities. Unless you are saying we are no longer playing any FCS or G5 teams, but we could do that under the current system so not a huge upgrade IMO. Also not sure there is a huge difference between Georgia Tech scheduling to play UNC, NC State, VA Tech, and Kentucky, from who they are currently playing in the ACC.
2. This is a huge negative for me. 24 spots is wayyy to many. You have nearly 40% of teams making the playoff. Last year Clemson would have made the playoffs with a 6-4 record against teams in the league.
3. Same note that it only really increasing by 1. And you got rid of Wake, Vandy, UCF, Rutgers, SMU, Houston, and Purdue off first glance in favor of NDSU, Memphis, and Boise State.
4. With how tight your conferences are it will be hard to split up even conferences for your relegated teams. For instance: USF, UCF, FAU, FIU, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, Costal Carolina, Vandy. Would all be in competition for a spot in the Deep South whereas you would be lucky to have 5 teams in the geographical footprint of the Western conference.
5. Hahaha just no. Lots of reasons for this beyond luck. The Atlantic, Appalachian, and Western conferences would always be huge outliers.
6. Then increase it by 10 and include the 7 I just mentioned and the service academy's. Thats only 1 more conference game.

I've got a better idea. Since your job pays you more than mine does send a large amount of money you have earned to me. That's what you expect the Big and SEC to do I suppose. Let the ones that that care a LOT about football, spend on football, have big stadiums, the most fan support and viewership be penalized to support those that don't care as much about it, have very little viewership, little stadiums and low attendance be propped up by those that have worked hard at what they have. You've got a great democrat, socialist, idea.
