Long undershirts - why?

What is with all the long undershirts that so many guys (not necessarily Clemson guys) seem to wear. Just give the defense something to grab onto. Several times I’ve seen guys tackled well short of the yardage they would have gotten had they not been slowed down by someone grabbing the undershirt.
