Watched Tony Bennett Press Conference on retiring...

3

Oct 18, 2024, 11:52 AM

He was very emotional and yes just as many thought thinks that major college sports is broken and just couldn't go on with it. He thought about it before and possible to do after this season; but realized that after the team was coming together after preseason practice that his staff for many years could handle it.

Ron Sanchez will take over as current in term HC after being with Tony many years since they were at Washington State. For a few years he took the Charlotte Head coaching job and did a good job there, before being offered a chance to come back as Associate HC under Coach Bennett two years ago.

If he gave proper notice before retiring, they could have conducted a coaching search and maybe hired an outside candidate. Retiring right before the season starts forces Virginia to give one of Tony's guys the interim job.

Coach Bennett today said that when the transfer portal and NIL started he said all the contract negotiations with agents were being done by his staff so he was totally out of that aspect. I'm sure once he hears of one last contract asking price or loss on a recruit was the spilling point that enough was enough.

Allows not forces. Who knows better who can handle this team, this year? Smart move by Coach Bennett - keeping his eye on what is best after his exit.

Based on the OP comments from the interview, it sounds like he was going to try and give it one more year, but after the pre-season practices he realized he just didn't have it in him, so this appears to be why he didn't give notice sooner.

It’s why he did it. It’s why Sanchez left being a HC to
Come back and coach with Tony.

Like I mentioned earlier, the timing was intentional

If the NCAA doesn't see a pattern here then they are blind. Tenured National Championship coaches leaving their sports, ie. Saban, Coach K, Bennet, and others like Chip Kelly, all with the same message when they step down, new era of NIL and Portal sux, basically.

While I don't think this is gonna go away, the NCAA has to find a way to create punishable rules and regulations. If not I could see other tenured coaches leaving for the exact reasons and one coach has already shown he is not a fan as he has not endorsed it as a tool, our very own Dabo.

The NCAA has lost total control and is not interested in doing anything. They are too afraid of politicians and lawsuits to try and legislate or enforce anything.

The NCAA is not in charge. The SEC & B1G are with unregulated free enterprise.

In this day and age, government is reluctant to get involved.

New guys will adjust. There will be winners and losers in the new landscape. Just like everything else, adapt or "die"

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What kind of "punishable rules and regulations"?

They can't interfere with private NIL due to losing court decisions.

They can't limit or restrict transfers because of court decisions.

They can't stop teams from recruiting from the portal because of court decisions.

The ONLY way the NCAA can get around any of that is to get a Congressional antitrust exemption. Congress has shown no interest in granting one. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) tried last year. He couldn't even get his draft bill out of committee.

The free market is deciding right now.

Hate to see him go but commendable to step down

Oct 18, 2024, 12:32 PM

Before it got the best of him in a bad way.

He had an awesome run but crazy to think after he stepped off the court in 2019 with a national title .. he never won another NCAA tourney game... Including two more embarrassing upsets, missing a tourney and really having no business making it last yr... Only squeaking in and being embarrassed in the First Four. In 15 seasons, he made the second weekend of the NCAAT only 3 times.. and all in a 6 yr span.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wonder if his style of play would be more difficult with today's youth and

It requires adaptation to the new paradigm.
Not every coach will be adaptable enough to compete or to WANT to compete now.

Couldn't care less about the college athletes in the so-called "revenue" sports. Cry me a river. They want to be professionals, be professionals. That means your coach might leave in the middle of the night.

I don't knock him for leaving at all. He's probably made enough so that he never has to work again. He can do TV if he wants. At 55, he should have a lot of time to enjoy life.

It's a testament to what a disgrace the current state of higher education athletics is.

Stop gaslighting.

1

Oct 18, 2024, 3:01 PM

The disgrace was that the NCAA's entire sports model violated federal law and exploited the athletes, especially football athletes.

The current state of affairs is infinitely better.

Re: Stop gaslighting.

Oct 18, 2024, 3:08 PM

Well Tony Bennett who was an actual coach said the current situation is not good. I will go with his, Saban’s, Dabo’s and Mack Brown’s assessment on the state of college sports. Thanks for chiming in with your constant BS, but you are wrong.

You are FOS.

Oct 18, 2024, 3:23 PM

The paradigm has changed from the old NCAA lawless model. The coaches that whine about it or quit simply can't adapt from the old, corrupt NCAA model.

That's their problem. Those guys benefitted millions upon millions of dollars from how it used to be. If they can't compete now, get out of the way for coaches that can.

I'm not wrong. I'm on the side of every pertinent law, court decision, and fact about the portal and NIL.

It's embarrassing and appalling that ANY Clemson folks want to return to the old, illegal, exploitation of the athletes.

Did I mention that you are FOS?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not exploitation

Oct 18, 2024, 5:25 PM

They played a sport in exchange for tuition, room and board and medical care. That isn't exploitation.

Oct 18, 2024, 3:24 PM [ in reply to Stop gaslighting. ]

It may be better for the short term financial well being of the players but IMO it sucks for the sport. Seems like in a few years it will be Tex, ATM, O, Ohio St, and similar big money programs competing for the titles every year. If I don’t feel like my team has a realistic shot to compete because they can’t afford to recruit a competitive team I’ll quit watching. I also don’t think it will be good for the long term financial well being of the players if they hop around from school to school looking for money and never earn a degree.

Re: Stop gaslighting.

Oct 18, 2024, 5:33 PM

The current state absolutely sucks as you said. But I don’t think sucks is a strong enough word. I will say that for the few players who rake in millions , who have a brain, and great advisement the lack of a degree won’t matter. But those will be extremely rare.

Bennett is a teacher/ mentor/ role model kind of coach. He’s disgusted and I don’t blame him. The state of revenue sports is just sad and tragically self inflicted. Bennett is a big loss. He’s not the first to step out for this reason and he won’t be the last.
