Unsung hero of the game: CJ Davidson

(at least I think that's who it was--he's so unsung I'm not sure).
Scooping up the ball out of the endzone on Boulware's boneheaded play and getting us some breathing room. If they had recovered it in the endzone, we would've been looking at a 3 point game much sooner than we did!
Heady play, likely saved the game!

If a player is blocked into the ball, then it is as if he never touched it.

he was going for the ball on his own, I just assumed it was a live ball and it would've been a TD or safety.

Even on replay it is incredibly close.
He dove into the path of the defender in order to try and block the defender, and it was VERY close as to whether he hit the ball before contact with the player or after.
It was an error that may have well been overturned by replay, but it was VERY VERY close.

But you have to depend on the Refs to make that call

And as we all know, refs--including replay officials--do not always make the right call. I'd rather CJ Davis make that decision for us than have the refs make it--because obviously they *didn't* make the call. I didn't hear any whistles. Trying to overturn a safety or a TD on replay would have been pretty difficult.

It was a heady play for sure, however, the rule states that if a player is blocked into the ball, the play is dead. It would have taken a review, but Boulware was obviously knocked into the ball as he was trying to block the defenders.
That doesn't change the fact that we had a guy who used his head and made a great play. Demonstrates that our level of coaching is getting better and better...

Actually....

I'm pretty sure the rule is if an offensive player is blocked into the ball it's not a fumble.
Therefore, not a big deal and actually resulted in worse field position for us.

he was pushed into the football, therefore it did not matter that he touched it, but it was smart of CJ not taking a chance

Actually "no" on the point swing. Since he was blocked into the ball, it would have been ruled as if he never touched it. If CJ would not have touched it, it would have been a touch back. In fact, IMHO, it still should have been ruled a touch back wince the ball went into the endzone without technically being touched by legal means. BUT still a headsup play.

- Actually - the announcers explained it - Boulware was blocked into the ball, hence we would have got the ball out on the 25(? - maybe 20) yard line if CJ Jones had not done that. But at the time - I didn't see Boulware get blocked into the ball (and possibly the refs didn't either) so I was excited to see CJ pick it up and run with it.

yeah that was a headsup play by him and a very scary moment. I wonder if they would of called it a touchback if a Georgia guy happened to hop on it since Boulware was blocked into the ball. We will never know.

Not Bone Headed Play

I agree...really smart, heads up play by Jones to scoop up ball from end zone and bring it out. But Boulware was blocked into the ball, therefore would be as if he never touched it, per the referee's explanation.

Sorry, it was still an error on Boulware's part

You simply don't pursue the ball in that case. It's the good kind of error in that it comes from the right motivation, but the coaches will get it straightened out.

have pointed out, it would have been a touchback. Either way, he didn't know that at the time, all he knew was that our guy touched it and he didn't want a safety or UGA TD.

Agreed. Boulware was blocked into the ball... but nobody knew it at the time. Only thing CJ saw and what we saw on TV was that Bouware had touched the ball and we were in danger of ##########.
Rock on Mr. CJ. Still a very bright spot for the young man's career.

That is what he was doing

But in so doing he put himself way too close to the ball.
It was a high energy play, made for the right reason, but that ended up being in error.
Coaches will certainly address it.
