There was the same whining before the ND game. Clemson businesses needed the commerce to stay afloat. These Saturdays keep this town from drying up and blowing away.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't have to read it to know exactly what Dabo was going to say. You only get 7 opportunities, maybe 8 now with playoffs. That's not many. There was no way to make the game up.
I would speculate it may have been a different decision if it was a non conference game, or if both teams were from a hard hit area. As Dabo said, there was no decision that would have pleased everyone. I would also speculate that the criticism and voices would have been a heck of a lot louder had we canceled.

Coots, Cat Ladies, and Communist hate Clemson and football. They take every opportunity to criticize Clemson. Helene was just another excuse!
Even the Stanford fans had a good time.
The Administration should make a public relief donation, with game proceeds, for upstate victims and surrounding areas. To Samatritans Purse and the Red Cross.

I've heard others complain: you used gas locals needed. They cleared roads there first.
Ok, both likely true. But the revenue! If I have a problem, then don't have a job, my problem is worse. The lines for concessions were longer, some workers couldnt make it. But plenty did. And they got paid. Maybe fuel was brought to those areas sooner than it would have without the game happening, and we didn't use it all, so that's good for locals.
You cant please everyone, so do your best, make the best decision you can, then move on.

The local stations were saying all week to get gas & cash before the storm hits so most locals should not have needed gas. I hate to sound crass about it as there are still people in need with no power and grocery supplies running low but gas shouldn’t have been a problem for most. This had to be a tough decision and I do feel for those still suffering, being without power sucks. On the other hand this game brought a lot of happiness to a lot of folks not to mention revenue for the merchants.

And, why Wallow In Misery?
I still have vivid memories post 9/11 of going to High school games and college games "just to feel like the world was normal again"!
If the decision had been made to: "Wallow in the misery"! Many people; myself included would have probably lost it. You aren't forgetting what happened. You aren't suddenly cold to the suffering of others; but "there is nothing you can do to change it"!
Wallowing in it doesn't help; it just creates more misery!
Bravo to all involved in allowing the game to be played.

It seemed to workout ok, if it was the wrong decision then the stands would've been half full and the field would've been a mess. Fans from both sides were able to make it and enjoy the game.

Everyone there (exceptions probably the Stanford fans) seemed to thouroghly enjoy themselves and I, at a friend's house since my power was out, was happy to watch onTV as I had looked forward to being there but the house in which we were to stay (in Salem) was without power and inaccessible.
So, somebody made $ - horrors. I imagine you get paid for what you do and would not do it if you weren't compensated. "Enjoy the roses and
think not of the thorns", some sage once said.
Why look on what you consider to be the sad side. Smile and get on with your life.

in the same boat, but I (and many others) worked pretty hard Friday and Saturday. To me and MY situation, the game was a much needed break. I was looking forward to it after one of my trees took out my neighbors porch and shed. (of course I always look forward to Clemson sports, this was just extra special distraction time) I do understand there are others in much dire situations too, with life & limb at risk. Not sure how holding the game hurt anyone and I certainly hope that's not the case, but lots of people who attended donated and helped out. Lots of people put in a tremendous amount of work and effort to hold the game as well. For a few hours, I was able to take a breath and relax before getting back to it.

The people I 'saw' complaining were online, not in person. I don't think one can over-state the impact the football program has had on growing the town, local businesses, and providing jobs (my family and I are locals who worked in the service industry for 10+ years).
Plus, if you're a local, you don't need gas to get to the game, and I'm confident any fan would have gladly shared their tailgate food or any resources they could.
Seemed to be coming mostly from the 'elites' tucked up in the fancy neighborhoods not interested in football (or probably even Clemson).
If safety was an issue, I know Clemson would have done the right thing and cancelled.
But welcoming our road weary guests, cheering on our Tigers, and supporting each other (in lots of ways) was desperately needed, and still is.
Go donate blood. Volunteer to clear brush. Check on the old folks. That's what WE DO at Clemson.

It was nice to watch the game and have something to take our minds off the storm.
BUT
Where the decision doesn’t make sense is they then turn around and cancel classes the following Monday, this article totally avoids that aspect. If it’s ok enough in the Clemson area for football on Saturday then you should definitely have classes two days later. Be consistent in your decision. You totally lose the argument that it was for $$$ when you hold the game then cancel classes. The grief from affected communities comes from the Monday class cancellation more so than the Saturday decision to have the game.
Dabo also answered the question exactly the way he should’ve.

Two totally different dynamics involved here. Classes were cancelled because so many kids have been affected by the storm at their homes/parents homes. These classes going on would have had way too many distractions and many students maybe not able to attend at all if they left and went to be with family. These classes for many last all day, but a ball game lasts 3/4 hours. The level of concentration and attentiveness is on two different planes as well. Totally unfair to compare the two decisions.

I've been cleaning my yard and helping neighbors since Friday around noon. While I'm still without power and internet at my house, I'm thankful we played the game. I listened to it on a hand crank radio which was spotty at time. It would lose its charge at the worst times. This brought back memories of the way my father listened to sports throughout his life.
I know many people suffered far worse loss than me and my family, but the the games played in the warzone were a nice way to put the storm out of mind for a few hours. Thank you Clemson and Stanford for playing the game and future games!

I am not saying that they shouldn't have played the game, but the complaints about fans eating up much needed supplies (gas, ice, food, emergency resources) that locals really NEEDED is legitimate - and should be recognized as such.

I have never gassed up in Clemson in my 60+ years of attending games (from Columbia). Most gas up before heading to Clemson and gas up after leaving Clemson. Most attending games bring their own food and Clemson, in this case, was not isolated like the mountain areas were.

I live five miles from Death Valley in Pendleton and can add my take on a couple of different aspects of this issue:
- Gas - the locals were the vast majority of people in line for gas at available stations on Saturday, not the fans coming to the game. Against my better judgment, I got sucked into the gas “scavenger hunt” by my daughter, along with solid nagging from her mother, my ex. She had half a tank and really did not need to drive anywhere, but she and her mother were absolutely freaking out. After striking out on the gas search in Anderson, we were finally successful in obtaining gas just across the state line in Georgia. This was truly the bizarro world and the locals were definitely the main culprits in this gas “feeding frenzy” on Saturday!
- The game as a diversion. I agree 100% with this angle. I am still without power 6 days after Helene and may be in this situation for another day at least one more day. My neighborhood is literally the last remaining area in Pendleton for reasons still inexplicable even to Duke Energy!
However, I definitely attended the game on Saturday night and it did indeed did provide me with several hours of enjoyment and escape from the reality of no power at my residence. I firmly believe that the 7:00 kickoff played a big role in the game being played. A noon kickoff that day would have been much harder to justify.
As always, I am All In and Go Tigers!!!

I can't tell how many time have seen tailgaters but 100 - 150 dollars worth of food at our local stores.
The reason it didn't seem isolated was that early emergency workers were given Clemson and surrounding avenues of approach as a priority for their efforts.

I live in WNC and my daughter came home from Clemson on Thursday morning. When I found out Monday or Tuesday, I don’t recall, that the game had been played, I felt a little odd.
To me it was like your neighbor’s house is on fire, but you go ahead with the cookout you had planned anyway.
As some have said here, any decision would have angered people either way.

Man up Dabo you and AD messed up should have postponed game. Stanford shouldn’t have had to come to Clemson during Hurricane. Alabama did it worse they played UGA when most of Georgia fans in Georgia didn’t have electricity and no gas to find place to watch game.

There seems to be this idea that everyone that attends Clemson football games comes from out-of-state or from hundreds of miles away. The reality is that the vast majority of people that were attending the game were from the area that was impacted by Helene. You could walk to any tailgate on Saturday and speak to the people there and most of them had no power, damage to their home, or both. If I were to have stayed at home in Easley, I would have bought ice, grilled out, and used my generator. Instead, I went to the game, bought ice, grilled out, and used my generator. I really don't see how that negatively affected the local supplies. I didn't even buy gas for my car.
Not all, but a large portion of the outrage was completely disingenuous because those people already hate Clemson. As far as I can tell, there were no "victims" of the game on Saturday.

I watched game an enjoyed it. Had to use a generator to power up my TV and internet. However, in hindsight, I think it should have been canceled once we realized just how bad the storm was and what it did to the area. The extra 80,000 people in town that day did not make it easier for locals to get fuel, ice and other supplies. But as Dabo said, there would be complaints either way.
