Hampton and Lukas have been absolutely horrific and Strozier is virtually unplayable. He just gets thrown out there because we don't have anyone else to come in when Reed has to bench the other two for massive screw ups. Gibson must not have progressed at all. It is unreal how bad we cover in man to man. Then, when the Safeties are left to cover in man, the results are even worse. This is as bad as I've seen since the Ford twins back in the 90s.

We’re back to Sheldon Lewis being our 2nd best CB.
I hate even thinking about it.

Agree. There's been a few spot posts but most have gotten lost in the "what's wrong with Cade " posts. From those posts, I guess many would be happy with us being a typical b12 team. Win 48-45 type games.
Your point is actually my biggest concern and questions. As poster Leon T posted, we need a hard reset on both sides.

It's deeper than that. Only Terrell plays against the run. The others are too scared of contact. That's a big part of our problem on run defense.

Yes, it is part of the problem that causes our perimeter to be soft. Even when our D ends contain the play, they are not getting a lot of help from the linebackers and corners. Thank goodness we have Hanafin at safety. Talking about safeties, it is getting frustrating watching Ricardo Jones chasing receivers all over the field usually 5 yards behind them.

Perhaps so from the absolute number of tackle whiffs.
However, as for the ‘whiff ratio,” I’d wager that Hanafin is behind only Terrell with respect to the lowest ‘whiff ratio’ among the DB unit.
One thing is for sure. Among our Safeties that played more than ~ one game (Barnes, for practical purposes, only played against SYR), Hanafin has clearly been better at both getting to the man with the ball and then taking the guy down.
Don’t even bring #6 into the conversation.

Clemson 2024 Tackle Numbers
Sep 27, 2025, 6:33 PM
[ in reply to Re: No one has really mentioned how bad our CBs have been not name Terrell ] |

Snaps Solo Tackles Ast Tackles
Woodaz. 707. 43. 40 Carter. 838. 42. 40 Brown. 444. 47. 33 Mickens. 750. 44. 31
Mickens made his share of tackles last year and was underappreciated. He played well in preseason for the Chargers and made their 2025 active roster.

Lukas has been terrible his entire time here...when healthy enough to play

This secondary has been atrocious all season, don't know which position is worse, the corners or the safeties. Can't cover and very slow, small too.

You forgot to mention out of position and uncertain of where to go, and when to go.
Other than what you detailed and this additional gem, they’ve been great.

We cover from behind, if at all. Kids learn to do that in HS where they are faster than everyone they face and some never get out of it because they are not coached to!

Tink and Shelton haven't been much better at Nickel or "Tiger". Tink always lines up playing inside technique to force throws to the slot receiver to the outside, yet he still gives up slants with regularity. It's baffling.

They are very bad.
Hampton, Lukas, Jones and Shelton would not see the field during the teen years.

The last time Clemson had a "good" secondary was 2018. There have decent to good individual players but as a whole they mostly are slow to react or are easily bated in major mistakes. They also are almost never a better player when they leave than when they first got on the field.

Our secondary was good in both 2021 and 2023.
Not awful last year.
I’m done talking about 2025.

And what makes it dumb is 90% of the passing plays against us are quick off the snap, yet they still give a 5 mile cushion to do whatever they want. I never understood when teams like try to neutralize our pressure by getting the ball out fast, why aren't our DB's up close ready to jump a route or bust them up at the point of the catch.....you know, like every defense does to our WRs lol.

The few times when our DBs come in tight, they get blown by for long gainers.
It’s bad. Really bad.

Our defensive backs are probably not that bad, but there is no pressure upfront to make the quarterback, throw quicker, leaving the receiver to find a open spot for him to throw to

Very true. Other than Heldt and occasionally Capeheart the dline has been completely AWOL. But even if they got more pressure the CBs are very slow to react and receivers are open quickly.

Ford twins last night.
These guys don't seem to work through the end of the play. It seems like they give up as soon as the receiver gets his hands on the ball. They're have been a couple of times I felt like they could have knocked the ball out for an incomplete if they continued to defend the play.

No pressure from dline.
Slow lbs.
Secondary that can’t consistently cover.
Any one of those three that were improved would greatly benefit the dense as a whole. But this is a lot of gears to have broken and still expect the machine to go.

Correct. When you can’t cover, you struggle to blitz and then hard to create havoc.

Time to move Hampton to Safety.
And move R.Jones back to the bench. R.J. has got to learn to tackle before he can be allowed to play anything more than garbage time snaps. For that matter, a bad tackler has no business playing on Special Teams.

You have a high school coach trying to coach safeties and the db coach who played pro ball is muted because he was not Dabos college roommate. Since. Mickey conn arrived secondary has sucked.

CB play hasn't been great, I agree but I'll also add that until theres at least SOME kind of threat of a pass rush its not going to get better, even if AJ and Mac walked through the door tomorrow. The D-line I feel is underperforming even more than the DB's mostly. They aren't forcing bad throws or even making the opposing QB's nervous. The only QB that's nervous from them at this point is Cade because he's got to run back on the field to three and out. Again.
