How many of yall have never placed a sports bet?

Despite being a huge fan of multiple sports and following it closely. I have never bet on sports. And I don’t plan to ever do so.
To me, viewing sports through the lens of betting just ruins it and it really annoys how much discussion there is about betting these days. There are many who can’t even enjoy games anymore without thinking about the betting implications.
I’m not judging anyone who does bet on sports, I’m just asking how many prefer the “pure” method of sports fandom?

never. don't plan to and I think it all the ads are going to get lots more folks who dont have the sense into financial difficulty. It also opens the door to unsavory influencer types. When Ohio allowed it they had the approved gaming companies ignoring the rules they had agreed to within a month. All the politicians see is ax money they can squander to get reelected. It is aboutn as skeevy as some NIL and portal shenangians

I use hard rock bets every Saturday and usually win anywhere between $40-400 bucks. The parlays are the way to go.

That showed me how bad I was at picking winners so not tempted any more (Donar’s Pick ‘em excepted of course. I still stick that up every year)
I’m with you on how it seems to be taking over the conversation, even on Gramlich & MacClain’s podcast, they look at the games in terms of all the different odds on the gambling platform that sponsors them.

When I watch tennis on the tennis channel now they talk about live betting odds with some sponsor during matches and it makes me cringe each time.
Especially in an individual sport which is more susceptible to fixing

Back in the 70’s, I ran my own power ratings system for both football & basketball. Refined some formulas and wrote some computer programs in the process. I was aiming to do some betting but never did. I just loved making the forecasts, and I loved participating in some pick ‘em contests.
Now these ratings systems are ubiquitous. I wish I had continued.
I have bet on some games, mainly baseball, while in Vegas just for fun. But nothing big. Just maybe a couple of Benjamins on Braves games. They usually break my heart.

I love the right to do it, I do it, sometimes watch the games, sometimes dont (I always watch Clemson though), and that's from someone that is 4- 13-1 thru 3rd week of pick 6 per week pool. I am 242 out of 272 people, but if I can 6 - 0 one week it pays huge. 5 people have done it so far.

I never have placed a bet either not judging the one's that do but I do cast a little judgment on the people who dont want the players getting paid but are fine placing a bet on same college football seems a little hypocritical to me. I know it is not the exact same thing but still don't like it

Most people shouldn't bet because they don't understand gambling. Most people don't have the discipline to take their loses and move on. They lose and start chasing their loses and end up losing more than they can afford.
If you are going to gamble set a budget and look at it as entertainment. Everyone goes into it thinking they are going to win and not considering if they lose.

This weeks game is why I have never bet on a sports game. Early in the week when the spread was 20.5 points I told my wife "I could make us a lot of money if I bet on sports because there is no way we are covering a 3 touchdown spread". Shows how much I know. Another comment related to betting and Clemson Football. One of the reasons Clemson was not well liked 15 years ago or so was because we would never cover the spread and we all know that many sports writers love to bet on games. Thus a lot of them hated Clemson because of how much money they lost on us.

I was going to say I can’t raise my hand because I will pay $10-20 each year to play fantasy football with friends. I believe it is betting, even though I do it just to have fun and laugh at friend’s dumb decisions throughout the season. It’s also one of the 2 reasons I watch NFL games (the other being to watch Clemson players). I would never put an actual bet on sports, though. Fantasy football has shown me how unpredictable everything is hahaha!

It’s fun for myself. I do not ever bet big chunks or anything but put a dollar figure in and try to maintain or make a little.
Mainly golf and football. Can’t figure out baseball. Tough sport to bet on imo.

It's difficult not to hear about sports betting when ESPN, which controls a huge percentage of sports, now has, for your convenience, ESPN Bet.
I've bet one time in my life--at Keeneland Race Track. I won $21 on a $2 bet.

To say I've "never" bet on sports would be a lie, I've had friendly wagers with friends over games. Rarely were they for money, usually they involved wearing the other's team gear or something. As far as "official" betting, never have and I never will. I know people who do, and some of those people have asked my opinion on games they were betting on, but its not something I'm interested in doing. I can see the slippery slope of online betting and would rather just abstain. I even tell those that ask that I don't/won't bet, so don't take my word on it for anything when placing a bet.

Never understood it…makes the games less fun to watch and more stressful. Had friends in school betting hundreds week after week. 35 years later, and none of them are retired. Go figure.
I dabbled in poker machines…at least they provided a tiny bit of entertainment value.

I could never bet AGAINST my team, and if you bet on them and lose, you lose twice. If you bet against the spread, you can win the game and lose the bet. And if you bet for us not to cover (or on an “under”), you could put yourself in a position of pulling against your own team.
I just wouldn’t be able to take emotion out of it. This is why I lose our family bowl and NCAA tournament pools year after year.

In elementary school, one of my classmate's dad used to play the old parlay cards and would give one to his son each week. He would bring it into class and we all would help him make his picks. That's about it for gambling with me. Never thought it was work the risk. My own son now talks about sports betting like he talks about the offense or defense. I agree with the OP, things have changed and not for the better, in my opinion.

In ~ 1978, I played the parley cards popular in Anderson at the time. I was very naive as a teenager thinking it would be easy money. Lost a few times and gave up betting. I sometimes bet with friends or coworkers, but the stakes are typically lunch or a cold brew.

I enjoy it and make small wagers every Saturday. I typically put $100 in my gaming account each season and that lasts me the entire season. The year Clemson beat Bama in Tampa I had nearly $700 at the end of the season. Last year I had about $70 at seasons end.
Sometimes I do parlay cards, other times I bet on a single game.
My logic is I’ll bet $5-$10 on game that I would normally not give 2 craps about….then watch that game like a hawk!
It’s cheaper than going to the movies!
I left the $70 in my account last year and I am at $118.69 after Saturdays games.
