Like a redneck construction company.
Spiers other daughter (the one who isn’t Dabo’s executive admin) is engaged to Drew Swinney.
You see someone like Bill Spiers ever getting fired?

Yup. Clemson has been this way for a long time. No shortage of BoT members’ kids with sweet university gigs. I just don’t remember anyone doing it this boldly while proclaiming “suck it if you don’t like it”!
We are still a state school even if AD is private. There have to be some guardrails for this stuff.

It may be even worse on our academic/school administration level; it's the primary reason Clemson tuition has skyrocketed over the past 20 years and it's #### near criminal how much the BoT and the admin have jacked up salaries and fabricated jobs.
Our football department is likely just a little microcosm of that bigger problem that thinks, "Well, if those guys can get away with it, why can't we?"
I love my school as much as any of us, but it's been a cesspool of incestuous, good ole boy, Tiger Brotherhood, backroom cronyism for a while. It just now has great football to go with it.
But maybe that's just all schools and I look harder at it because it's my alma mater.

Perpetuate the issue. I’m not going to stoop to posting kids’ names but we have a couple roster slots given to the offspring of parents I know who are in SVP or higher positions in University admin. These kids couldn’t bench press the bar and two 35 pound plates without a spotter.

15 guys who have Clemson, Six Mile, or Central as their home town. Innumerable more if you extend that radius to Greenville, Mauldin, Anderson, etc.

By my count with no overlaps, there are a total of 45 players on that roster who are either:
- From Alabama - From Clemson, Six Mile, or Central - Coaches’ kids or legacy players - Unrecruited walk ons (this number may actually be higher, I was quite generous with a lot of SC players)

Per 247 recruiting rankings, we have 52 players on the roster who were not rated/NA in their recruiting rankings.
That 52 doesn’t include: - Keith Adams Jr (3*) - Tye Herbstreit (2*) - Blackmon Huckabee Jr (2*) - Jaheim Lawson (3*) - Hunter Johnson - Josh Sapp (3*) - Bannon Spector (3*) - Cole Turner (3*) - Venables (3*)
So unlisted recruits + legacy players = 61

I’m just under 6 foot, can’t run very fast bc of the titanium rod and screws in my femur, haven’t tried a bench press since high school, and I have all my eligibility left.
Do you think if I send Dabo a nice email stating all the family connections I have w Clemson and a picture of my degree he will give me a walk on spot?

Can I be football coordinator?
You may not remeber but we met once at a Spring game. While I did attend Furman with Bill Napier, I did have a picture printed in the Tiger News once when i was in highschool circa 1998 so my ties to Clemson are unquestionable.
I don't want to be in charge of the whole team, just how many footballs are needed where for practices and such.
I'll do it for 100k if i can work remotely.
Sincerely,
Ayejoe

Hey man. Dabo is building something.
Jan 3, 2023, 9:49 AM
|
|
A program where any 2-star or walk-on can come in and get their shot so long as their parents have some money to pump into the program and maybe there's a job waiting for Uncle Steve.
I get that Dabo wants to do it differently, but that only works if you're winning; and especially not when the Athletic Department is chucking the tin cup at our heads saying they need more money to compete. And, no. A 10-win season is not winning if you expect to have a shot at the national championship.
I'm more pessimistic than optimistic, and it's primarily because Dabo treats good-faith skepticism as overtly hostile. It's to the point where if the next time he threatens to leave, someone should hold the door open for him and call his bluff. I'm beginning to suspect Dabo needs Clemson more than we need him (especially if the wins don't come again), because I'm no sure where else he'd get to build this type of little fiefdom with the money we pump into a program.
I'm not sure he'd even get the job at Alabama at this point, as there is no way he'd play by their rules.

have considered hiring Dabo would have been in the 24-48 hours following the 2018 Natty. I have always thought he was a coach that just would not work out anywhere else that had aspirations of being in the hunt for a championship every year. I'm sure he would do just fine at a lot of southern G5 schools, but I've always found the Alabama thing laughable. He just doesn't fit their profile in my mind.

It’s honestly pretty infuriating if you really think about it. I’m sure this exists to some extent at every college program, but Dabo has taken the nepotism and employing/enriching his family, friends, and former players to a whole other level, at its coming at the cost of football success and football donors.
I think one’s tolerance for this is going to come down to whether or not 9-10 wins in the ACC and getting our doors blown off by everyone else is acceptable or not. Some clearly think it is.

Come to Clemson, where the coach's son will see the field before you, we don't have the NIL money like other programs because our coach doesn't believe in it, and you'll be developed as a player by the walk-on's dad. And we have a slide.

10's of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in Clemson football (after you add up the cost for donations, RV's, tailgate trailers, etc.) are not going to tolerate that nearly as well as the old timers who have been through Tommy West/Bowden.
This kind of thing coupled with his behavior after anyone questions him or any other coaches will wear thin really, really fast.

I think the new money bandwagon crowd got on board just as much to support Dabo as Clemson. They’re firmly embedded in his cult of personality and can’t wait to run to Knickerbocker’s and buy his latest version of BYOG apparel. He could take a dook on their kitchen table and they’d take a selfie with it.
They’ll keep writing checks for Tiger walks as long as he’s here. They’re here for the tailgating and Dabo as much as the school, and they will never get that a man can’t get bigger than a school. They will also be gone as soon as he eventually is.

You'll get four years of fat checks from them while their carpet bag of a kid is at school because it gets them seats and a tailgating spot, then they're done. They'll never be lifetime donors. Cut [a check] and run.

popular thing to do, just something else they can one up their neighbors with. And it's always fun to pull for a winning team. Based on what I've seen this year at games though, the novelty might be wearing off to some degree. Sure, the RV park in Pendleton is full year round but I don't ever recall seeing open spaces in the parking lot at halftime of the Carolina game, nor had I ever seen people packing up early like I did this year. I know they said the stadium was sold out a few times, but I doubt it based on what I saw. Top corners always had seats, and I don't think I ever saw the hill full.
We've had the same tailgating crowd around us for basically my whole life, and every year more people drop out. Some of those spaces stayed empty just about the whole year. The old timers kids definitely aren't keeping up with it, it used to be a generational thing that the family would continue. The people moving into the area seem to have little to no interest in the actual games, they just want to fly a Tiger flag from their $130k pontoon.
I'm probably rambling somewhat here, but I think another factor is Clemson football really hasn't had any competition on Saturdays. Now there are events, concerts, water parks, all sorts of other stuff to do. But maybe that is just me getting older too.
Lastly, I think there are a lot of fans who are getting a little tired of feeling like Dabo is lecturing them. We've supported him, celebrated him, and appreciate everything he's done for the team and town....but don't pisss down our back and tell us it's raining Dabo. You can erase a lot of good will with that BS.

I think a large portion of the base is getting fed up with the “us against them” schtick he’s played with the team against the fans the past couple seasons.

Telling fans that we “want the young men to fail” for criticizing their play or the play calling or the coaching pisses me right off. I’ve been a Clemson football fan looooong before Dabo was here and will be long after he’s gone, don’t tell me I want our team or players to fail like I have some sort of personal vendetta.

I'm probably rambling somewhat here, but I think another factor is Clemson football really hasn't had any competition on Saturdays. Now there are events, concerts, water parks, all sorts of other stuff to do. But maybe that is just me getting older too.
And it's a lot easier/often more fun to just watch the game on a big ### TV along with three other games and your friends without fighting traffic.

of the competition big, cheap TVs have had against the movie theater industry.
As costs of attending in person go up, the incentive to stay home does, too.

I remember how impossible hockey and the French Open used to be to watch on pre-HD TV’s. Puck was impossible to see as was a yellow tennis ball against an orange court.

Nepotistic, unqualified hires...

Have been a pretty popular part of the Clemson experience going back to at least Pres. Barker, where they just made up an admin job for his daughter in law.
Look, don't get me wrong, this ain't good, but when it's been given the okay for years in Sikes Hall without a single squeal from anyone, what do y'all expect?

What exactly is a Director of Special Teams, and

how does it compare to Special Teams Coordinator, one of Mike Reed's responsibilities as a member of the coaching staff?
As I understand it, the number of "coaches" is limited, but apparently you can have as many non "coaches" on your staff as you want.

Re: Interesting Dabo hire thread.

This truly is getting to be ridiculous. Is there another D1 school with this many former players on staff, most of whom would not sniff similar positions at elite football programs?
Frank and Shane Beamer both have shown the value of special teams. Spiers may turn out great, but hiring him to the baseball staff makes more sense than hiring him for the football program.
Dabo appears to be wholeheartedly embracing Jim Clyburn's style of hiring and throwing bones around to "his people."
I've witnessed institutions where the staff became more and more inbred. Those institutions became more and more unaccountable, more arrogant and intolerant of legitimate criticism. Heads ended up rolling and the empires collapsed.
I admire and truly appreciate Dabo for what he has done, but these constant hires from essentially within "the Clemson family" are at complete odds with "Best is the Standard."

I only read through the coaches but the only former player I saw is their D Line coach, and he has power 5 coaching experience at another school between stints at Bama. They have a fairly surprising number of one-time SCar coaches on their staff.

Interesting list. Also, if we’re going to have former players be coaches, which I’m NOT universally opposed to, it should be guys like Nick Eason that have coached at other power 5 schools or in the NFL before coming back here, rather than just being given a job that they have no resume for. Eason would be gobbled up by any other P5 school in a split second, can’t say the same for any other coach on our staff, maybe Mike Reed.

Can you imagine hearing something like "Coastal Carolina is targeting Grisham/Spiller/Austin/Conn for a coordinator position"? We would all assume they were being rehomed.
That is a serious problem.

TD’s don’t bother me and neither do differing opinions. It would be a lot more interesting though to discuss why you think these are acceptable, even solid, hires?
