Any cool things to see or places to eat in New York City?

Taking the kids for Christmas. Probably doing the Rockettes, Summit One observatory, and someone recommended The Color Factory and Natural Science Museum.
Any can't miss spots? Never been. (Not doing 9/11 - too sad for my 7 year old.)

It's in the theater district IIRC and was very good. They have been open for over 30 years so must be doing something right.

Circle Line boat tour around Manhattan
FAO Schwarz at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for the kiddos to empty your wallet
Times Square stroll at night which is probably still reasonably safe these days

drinks. Jimmy's Corner is right off of Times Square, was opened by a former boxer, full of pictures of famous boxers with Jimmy(the now deceased owner thanks to Covid), dollar bills on the wall as I recall and very cheap drinks. It's a dive but your best bet for a buzz that doesnt break the bank.

I seem to recall a strip club in close proximity to Times Square that served up the best 'NY strip' NYC had to offer.
That was their claim, and while likely untrue, I chose to believe it cause tiddies and 22 go together quite well.

The Natural History Museum is one of our country’s greatest gems. I could spend days in there. The view from the Top of the Rock is better than the ESB in my opinion. Amazing at dusk if you can get tickets. Rockettes are ok, Cirque du Soleil Christmas show at MSG is better. MOMA is great if you’re into art- skip the Met. Christmas market at Bryant Park (?) is a shiteshow but good people watching.

Also, depending on how old they are, you should take them to FAO Schwarz. If only to get a stuffed animal and hit up the candy shop. That place can make anyone feel like a kid again.

Do Top of the Rock instead of Empire State for a great view of the city. Less of a wait AND you get the Empire State building in the view.
If you can break away without kids, McSorley's and/or The Federal Bar.

Here's what I tackled in 5 days in NYC with a dino loving 8yo during a spring break.
We stayed across the street from the Natural History museum and went every afternoon before grabbing dinner and walking around central park. Treat the natural history museum like a scavenger hunt and explore the different parts.
- Day 1 afternoon: Arrival and Natural History museum - Day 2: Ellis Island / Statue of Liberty, then walk up to 9/11 memorial - Day 3: Empire State Building, Library and Intrepid aircraft carrier - Day 4: The MET (mummies/knights), central park, zoo and lego store/FAO - Day 5 morning: Natural History museum and departure
Stay within a few blocks of major subways and you'll be golden. Still one of my favorite spring breaks ever.
