That's a great mentality to have, to do just enough to win when you haven't lost yet and we would still be ranked #2. But, we have lost a game already and if your goal is to make the 4 team playoff again how you win means a lot to the committee members who rank you each week from this point on.
Now more then ever you have to make your case each week on the field to these members since we never got off the bus in syracuse and jumping on a team early by scoring 21 points and then putting it in ultra conservative mode in the second half by three and outs and punting almost every series is not going to help us make a impression on the folks we need to impress.
Should not have had no problem beating tech and wake forest each by more then two touch downs if we didn't take the foot completely off the gas. That's why we only went up one spot with a win in yesterdays poll and two other teams jumped over us. Just my too cents....
GO TIGERS!!

Except only Notre Dame passed Clemson and deservedly so. The AP poll means nothing. The real rankings come out tomorrow night and that’s the only thing that matters. Win out and Clemson is in. Too many other teams in the top 10 are playing each other this coming month to worry about who’s ahead of you.

A Racehorse or a Mule?

AGREED! It is one thing to play as to not lose, but this team has yet to show that they can move the ball for 4 quarters... except maybe with Louisville. We have a racehorse that is being limited or restrained in the 2nd half of the track. If they are not allowed to stretch their legs, work out the kinks and learn how good they can be to build their confidence, HOW will they have the confidence to do it in a tight game (Syracuse)... or with the exercised play-off teams. The other great teams are not shutting down after a half... they are learning HOW TO WIN! And as for as running the ball... great! But for heaven's sake learn to throw the ball more than 5 yards at a time!

I guess he is saying we just need to get a ROCKING CHAIR for the 2nd halves or just fall asleep... Let's see how well that works out when they are really tested... maybe this weekend...

Amen! The play calling for 4 straight games has been haphazard. Instead of calling what works and working on the weakness of the defense, we just call plays and very conservative. How many times are we moving the ball and run some high risk play and the drive stalls. Come on guys, be creative, keep the defense guessing , try some new wrinkles and use our talent. We should score 40+ points on anyone with our talent. Question, do we really have a true offensive minded coordinator. ???

As these seasons go on and Clemson continues to develope talent in the second half of games, to prepare depth for late in the season and the following year.
If you listen and watch Nick Saban learned a lesson on this last year. During his SEC media day interview (preseason) he touched base on having his guys more prepared by season's end. If Nick noticed and spoke on it the point has been noted by those whom matter, I am sure of that.
The commitee is not a bunch of dimwits eating all the ESPiN rubbish. They are there to select the 4 best teams, period. They want the best complete teams and will leave out a team that is deserving but has injuries to impact players. Complete depth (experienced players) is no different and is part of the equation on who are the best teams.

That's really the only thing holding this group up is the down field passing. Over the middle is pretty good but the long ball is not there . Cain has missed a few that Williams would have caught and KB has missed a few that DW would have made. It's been very close but for some reason just not there.

Scott calls it complimentary football. It's conservative by another name. Point: Aggressive or laid back. It is different to the opponent. Which is the point. Go Tigers.

I’m right there with you. Scoring on the first drive of the second half put us up by 3 td’s over a team that had barely managed one positive play against our D in the first half. At this point we get our reserves some game experience, limit the number of times Kelly runs the ball (one carry in the second half), and let the defense do their job. Very smart in my opinion especially given the weather conditions. If we win out we’re in. Like the man said last week - trust the guys with the big shiny rings. I think this week at NCST will be a “leave no doubt” game much like Louisville. GO TIGERS!!!

It makes sense and this team is pretty much what I had hoped it would be thus year. A very good team that compliments both sides of the ball.
Without putting together an Excel sheet, I feel like we've had better game control than last year. I like this team a lot. Not as flashy as last year but just as much fun. Not having to rely on last minute DW heroics at the end.

I'm picking up what he's putting down.
I think, to a degree are being conservative. But, I think that is a function of 4 things:
1) We are mixing in 2nd & 3rd string players with some of the 1st string, earlier in the games than ever. It's difficult to find consistency, rhythm and timing when there is constant change (but, I think this is a way of the coaches to challenge the players, too, as they are looking to build depth for the last 4-6 games of the season).
2) We're leaning on the defense once we get up by 2 scores. It's a obvious strength, so lean on it.
3) I think we're still installing offense. It's a different story this year than last with Deshaun returning for his 3rd season. Even though Kelly was the back up, there is still a lot of grasp and process. Not too mention, some things were (still are) being put in just for his skill set. Ex: A saw a particular misdirection QB counter we haven't run since Ohio State last year.
4) Maybe the biggest reason... I think we're holding back a lot on the play calling and saving things for later in the season. If we can keep some plays off film till later in the season, it's a HUGE benefit to have that in your pocket when it's needed.

Makes complete sense to me, on every level. Some folks have heard "style points" so much that is like a reflex at this point.
Once a game looks to be in-hand and a team like Clemson does not let the other team back in it while they play depth, is more impressive than running up the score with the starters over an already proven inferior team (1st team vs 1st team), imo.

he is trying to win in a different way. Just being conservative and trying not to blow it I guess. Guarantee when TL gets on campus we will look way different as far as play calling.

if we aren't changing from the wide open spread to something more of a pro set. I think we'll always call the QB's number and we'll always run the option read but QB types are changing.

Please just connect the deep ball

How many times have we thrown a ball to cain and it's dropped? It's a little more than a lot. There is around 3 times per game where the ball is literally in his possession or what would appear to be and he just drops it. His freshman year was much more productive than this. What happened? He can clearly beat the defenders down the stretch he's probably the best breakout deep threat but he has to catch the ball with his hands. In comparison, not everybody is hunter renfrow and that guy can catch really really really, did I say really well? yea Renfrow can catch and that catch on the ground against Syracuse was sick if not as cool as Odell Beckhams one hander I don't know what was. Even the announcers were going nuts over that catch but regardless Cain I want to succeed and go to the NFL and to do that he needs to learn how to highpoint and control the ball with just his hands. One of the best was Deandre Hopkins Mike Williams and Renfrow currently. I really hope Renfrow goes to the NFL too. If anybody passes on this farther than the 3rd round you're smoking some serious crack. But please please pleaseeee work on this Jeff Scott. Just improving Cain's catching will literally make us a 40 point team every game. While still looking amazing on run game. I can't say I don't like our stable of running backs and they are amazing Ettiene is probably going to stay one of the best running backs in the game and we might see him in the NFL draft in first 2 rounds. He has such acceleration and if he stays injury clean we might have the next Heisman winner no joke.

Maybe the defense is. 3 points in an entire half of football

Is not going to win games against Good opponents. If our defense took the night off like they did at Syracuse, GT would have made it a game.
Time to face facts - Clemson doesn’t have the offense to compete, like they did last year. If we rematch Alabama, it will be very ugly. The talent might be there but the performance has not (maybe Louisville, but they are looking baaad).

Defense and special teams(field goals) let us down. Our QB was hurt before the game and then knocked out the game.

QB learning the offense?
He's been there 4 years if he doesn't know it by now he'll never know it.
I think Clemson gets lazy and sits on a lead depending on the defense to hold the other team. Just go for TDs every series and keep the play book wide open. Stop sitting on a lead and running the clock that's when they lose their offensive flow.
