New playoff proposal

How about same teams get in, same bracket, but top 4 teams as rated by the CFP committee get to choose if they want the first round bye (seeded 1-4) or if they want to play and not have an extra couple weeks off (seeded 5-8).

So same 5 conf champs (5 highest rated conf champions) and 7 byes.... just top four teams as ranked by the CFP get to decide if they want a first round bye or an at home first round.

Then the teams that are ranked 5-8 will fill in the spots with first round byes or home first round playoff games of the 4 spots after the top 4 pick.

Just make it 16 teams so you can completely fill out a bracket. What this year showed is that nobody has a clue who are the top rated teams so let’s just give up trying. Add 4 more and let them fight it out

Any changes in the playoff format is going to go in the direction of more games, not less games. All of the four teams that got a bye this year could’ve played seeds 13, 14, 15, and 16 the first week. More revenue. It’s coming. And it won’t have anything to do with fairness or who the best team is. Just more revenue.

If we had 4 this year it would have been all the teams that lost this round.

Nah. In the old format, Oregon, UGA, and Boise would have gotten in but no way Arizona State gets in even if they won their conference. The 4th spot would be hard to determine so the Playoff Committee would have defaulted to Bama. :)

I don’t realistically think any team is going to elect to play before they would have to

Plus, in doing so you would also further yourself from where you would start in the tournament and that does not make sense

Go to 8. Top 4 seeds play first round at home. 4 winners advance to the playoff bowls same as when the playoff was just 4 teams. No auto bids for the conference winners, but winning your conference should be a big factor for selection by the committee.
