Bill Cowher will be Clemson's next coach!!!

Oct 21, 2008, 3:59 PM

Lots of people seem to think our next coach will be Bill Cowher. I think that this is an unrealistic choice given that he has never coached college, has never recruited for college, doesn't need the money, would command a $3-4m per year salary, and if he was inclined to return to coaching (in college) he would probably would go to Tennessee or Auburn if those jobs are open, or Arkansas/Nebraska last year. Despite other similar examples of (somewhat) legendary coaches returning to college (such as Holtz and Spurrier returning to South Carolina), I cannot realistically conjure up a universe in which Bill Cowher would ever come to Clemson.

I continue to be dumbfounded that some fans think he is a realistic option. In my opinion, he ranks up there with Pete Carroll, Bill Parcells, Danny Ford, Rich Rodriguez, et al, as far as being absurd, unrealistic, outlandish and downright absurd candidates.

In conclusion, I am asking for any person who thinks that former Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steeler Coach Bill Cowher is a candidate for the Clemson head coaching position (should dabo not be hired) please provide the people who read this board with some reasons why you would think that he- #1: would be realistically come to Clemson, #2: would be a good candidate for the job.

Please be advised that the following points have been argued to death and considered by my self to be invalid. Please come up with some new material here:
-Clemson is a magical/special place
-his daughter goes to school at wofford (so stupid that it does not even merit a response)
-Spurrier/Holtz came to South Carolina
-He could win an ACC title here
-Has name recognition for recruiting

My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

Because Levon told him to take the job.***

Well that too but I was thinking more of the half-nekkid sunbathing women... Didn't think I'd have to explain that. ;)

I think that it is definitely a stretch but I think that it is worth a shot. Bill Cowher loves this area (SC and NC). He wanted a couple of years away from the game to spend with family. Many people close to him have said he is ready to come back and he has always been intrigued by the college game. However, I believe that he will go to the NFL. It's still worth a phone call.

"Lou Holtz for Pwesident"

he may be unrealistic.........

Oct 21, 2008, 4:17 PM

but to not even explore the option and throw everything we got at him would be absurd.....all he can say is no.

I NEVER could conjure up a universe in which lou holtz and steve spurrier would EVER go to USC, but they did.

answer your questions
1. I don't know what cowher thinks........h3LL he turned down 7million/year to come back as steelers head coach so money isn't the biggest issue for him. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family. Daughter at wofford??

2. He would be as good a candidate as any on our board now. If you think CLEMSON would EVER turn down a shot to have cowher as HC you're an idiot.........Any school in the country with a vancancy at the HC position would consider cowher..........Who knows if he would succeed at the college level...........but I'd love for clemson to be the one to find out.

Why not ask?

worst thing he can do is say no. Its not like if we ask he will blow up the University.

You HAVE to ask if you are TDP. It's his job.***

I don't think he is a realistic candidate either, but

Oct 21, 2008, 4:22 PM

you can't ignore Spurrier to SCU, becasue nobody thought that would happen either. That helps little here though...

As for your reasoning, in regards to #1, why would he come to Clemson? Who knows? Maybe he wants to stay in the South? It is a great college football job, where he could win. Maybe he wants a crack at the college game?

A response to #2, merits no discussion. He wouldn't be a "good" candidate for Clemson. He'd be a f'in GREAT candidate, and if we had the chance, we should do everything we could to get him.

And please, don't try to pretend his name wouldn't assist in recruiting. That's just plain stupid. There would be a plethora of kids lining up to play for that guy.

And FYI, Cowher wasn't interested in coaching this season. He stated that over and over again last year. This year, who knows? He hasn't publicly dismissed any overtures, yet.

I don't think it is realistic to consider him a viable candidate, it just blows my mind that people actually wouldn't want Bill Cowher.

You still make him tell you NO! I don't think it would be a

Oct 21, 2008, 4:25 PM

matter of him saying no. I think it would all come down to money. (Could we afford him)

And you are wrong; the Spurrier argument is very relative. I can't tell you how many people including the national analyst who said Spurrier would NEVER come to USUC. Well he did. And money was the deciding factor.

Listen to what some coaches and analyst are saying. Re: Bud Foster - "You would have to be crazy to not want to coach there. That is one I would be all over." When asked about the Clemson Job.

If the money is right, anybody will come. Including Bill Cowher!

Re: Bill Cowher will be Clemson's next coach!!!

Oct 21, 2008, 4:25 PM

Kudos;you bring up many good points, but I would like to think that of all the other names you mentioned Rich Rodriguez might just be the one name that could surface.Apparently,he is on the HOT seat, yes he only in his first year at Michigan, his wife ,from what I here doesn't like Ann Arbor, and I have to wonder if Bowden had been fired at the end of last season, would Terry Don had made him an offer.I don't think even the remote possibility of seeking out Rodriguez is absurb, unrealistic,or outlandish. The other names definitly, but Rich ,in my opinion is viable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uhhh...no...he won't

Oct 21, 2008, 4:26 PM

Why would Cowher agree to come to Clemson or any other college for that matter when there will be several NFL teams willing to pay him upwards of $8 million per year to become their next head coach. Cowher is a career NFL guy and that's exactly where he is going to remain if he elects to get back into coaching at all.

that was exactly my point...***

Oct 21, 2008, 4:36 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

clearly some people can't comprehend this concept...

Oct 21, 2008, 4:35 PM

I'm not saying that he wouldn't be a good choice, should he be available and interested. I'm not even saying that we shouldn't talk to him. All I'm saying is that people come up with these ridiculous lists and have their top choices as Rich Rodriguez and Bill Cowher. I really think that they need to get their head examined and actually put forth legitimate candidates.

There are a million arguments people can make for or against Kiffin, Muschamp, Paul Johnson the guy from Tulane, etc. Whether or not you agree or disagree on whether they will succeed as Clemson's next coach (should they be chosen and accept) can and should be argued, those are legit candidates.

Would Cowher be successful at Clemson? more than likely, would Cowher recruit well at clemson? more than likely, Cowher's chances of coming to Clemson? slim to very slim (at best)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Interesting, your first post suggests that he wouldn't be

Oct 21, 2008, 4:51 PM

a good choice...so which one is it?

What's the harm in inquiring about a guy like Cowher? Why does it bother you that people bring it up, especially at this stage of the search?

Do you know anything about Rich Rod's situation at UM? Let me say this, #1- he hasn't signed his deal with UM;
#2- they are UNBELIEVABLY dissapointed with what he has done there. It wouldn't shock me at all if UM told him to take a hike after this year (and still pay WV). They simply don't mess around up there, and he has rubbed a few people the wrong way, which is not a surprise.

Saban to Bama should have taught you that anything is possible in this business.

As time goes on, your argument will be correct. If we get to the end of November and learn the search has narrowed (and doesn't include a Cowher or JJ, etc), then the talk should stop. Until then, your thoughts are a bit premature i'm afraid.
