I would not be surprised if Brownell resigns after the season is over. Whether he's given that option over being fired, or he does it on his own, I think it's very likely. I think he still loves coaching but he's made a nice lick here and he knows he's done all he can at Clemson.

Sub .500, 121-123. At a time when there are 20 conference games per season, unbalanced schedules, and the weakest ACC (past few years) in decades (ACC projected to send only 3 teams to NCAA).

Zero conference championships (regular season or tournament). Average finish in ACC 7.5th place.

Since Brownell took over at Clemson...

UNC, Miami, Virginia, FSU, Duke all won at least one ACC regular season, and

Duke, FSU, Miami, Virginia, Notre Dame, UNC, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech have all won at least one ACC Tournament.

This was supposed to be Brownell's best team ever, and right now it looks a lot like they will have yet another losing ACC season, and yet another missed NCAA bid.

That's what all of these discussions turn into. He has more wins, he has the best this or that. The simple fact of the matter is the direction of the program is stale. I get you and some others are worried about coach hopping but anyone with eyes can see the program has maxed out what it will be under coach Brownell.

A new coach would bring some renewed energy and excitement to the program.

If Neff feels that a change is needed, he shouldn’t let the fear of someone being worse stop him. However, he would need to make sure to have a really good pool of candidates. Simply getting a mid-major guy is a weak approach and one that says we aren’t serious about high level basketball success.

I’ve seen lots of posters here over the last decade salivating over a coach who has a good year. Everyone here wants him, asks why we can’t have that, etc. Then reality sets in and that coach has some down years and maybe some losing seasons.

Paris is doing a nice job this year. But can he sustain it? Will they be a top 25 team consistently? That’s what we should want. If we want the occasional really good year, we know we can have that. We had it with Ellis, Barnes, and Purnell. But the issue is that it has never been sustained.

I’ll be surprised if Paris sustains it at SC.

At any rate, I think you are totally and completely wrong. As usual. If we make the NIT and Bradley supposedly does what he was supposed to do last year and prove the doubters wrong, that we really are a "Tournament team," Neff would not fire him.

As JK liked to repeat, NCAA or you're fired WAS NOT PART OF THE DEAL!!!

But if he makes the NIT and craps the bed again, making Neff look like an idiot fool again, I don't see how he would survive that - and his $3 million a year scam will finally be over.

most years it might not be that simple, but after the same results for so many years, it probably will simply come down to that this year. It would be hard to fire him if we make the tournament, and if we don't, we can't say the chance wasn't reasonably there and missed yet again.

He is in as in just keep him here or he is in as in extend his contract? If your long tenured coach is on a year to year plan to keep his job just pull the band-aid off and move on now. Let's say he makes the tourney this year and they don't extend. What are the expectations next year to keep his job? The fact we have to ask ourselves this every year is insane.

But we are nowhere close to the most talented team in the ACC.

UNC and Duke have more 5 star recruits on their current teams than we have had total in our program history.

We don’t have any 5 star players on our team.

Yet we played both teams close. Shouldn’t Brad get credit for putting us in position to win those games? Or do you guys no longer have the ability to be objective and say something positive about him?

Horseshoes and hand grenades. Losing close is equivalent to losing. When is the last time we truly beat someone that we were not expected to beat in conference? Brownell has to go if he misses the tournament again. I used to think that he was an X’s and O’s guy that lacks the recruits, but yesterday even with a raucous home field advantage and better talent, he was owned on the dry erase board.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wait, so does ACC success matter or not?

Last year we finished 3rd but all of you said that the ACC sucks and it doesn’t mean anything.

This year, we beat several really good teams in the non-conference portion of the schedule, but now that doesn’t seem to matter because the ACC is what’s important?

Please stop moving the goalposts.

Brad wasn’t owned on the dry erase board yesterday. He’s the one who made adjustments that allows us to come back from a double digit deficit to take the lead late. He was one missed shot away from winning. That’s not him getting “owned” by Bennett, no matter how badly you want it to be.

His Xs and Os suck. He can't reign in PJ and he's been abysmal helping Girard find a rhythm. He couldn't draw up a shot for Girard if his life depended on it. The droughts and scoreless streaks that are coming to define this seasons collapse are because CBB has zero ability to get the team into sets on offense that create any type of advantage or forays into the paint. Hes terrible. This season more than any I've seen highlights this inability and should be the primary reason he is gone in April.

But we have far more talent than both this years UVA and GT teams.

Step back and honestly analyze this. The most talented team in Brownell’s tenure (and probably top 5 most talented in Clemson history) started the season playing like a top 15 team and shooting for a top 3 seed in the tourney. Now, halfway through ACC play and we sit in 11th place in the conference and only 1 win against a team with a winning conference record.

I know you don’t like the Tommy Bowden comparisons, but if you can’t see it you are purposely choosing to bury your head in the sand.

His Clemson coaching career has been slightly above average at best. However, his biggest indictment is the inability to consistently beat the teams we should beat. CBB teams have always been wildly inconsistent from game to game. This is the biggest thing Dabo fixed in football. We started with consistently beating the teams we should always beat and grew the roster talent over time to be able to compete with the big boys.

Bowden was a great guy who did a tremendous job pushing for football facility upgrades and building the fan support back after the disaster of West and Hatfield. He was a great guy, ran a clean program, and did the best he could. I believe the same about CBB. But at the end of the day, we had to move on to move forward.

Some cooks love to cook, but it doesn't make them a good cook. Some people think they can sing, but they sound awful. Some coaches may love to coach, but it doesn't mean they're good at it. There are ELITE coaches, some are terrible coaches, and some are middle-of-the-road mentors. BB has held Clemson hostage in middle-of-the road mediocrity for 14 seasons. It's time to open the prison doors and push him out.
