NCAA and ACC sanctions in the 80s

Oct 13, 2017, 1:46 PM

How many remember that the NCAA handed down sanctions on Clemson during Danny's years and the ACC (holier than Thou) doubled down and extended sanctions. Guess who the main driver was; NC. If you remember, two alumni (not coaches) tried to give money to two possible recruits in, I think?, Tennessee. The NCAA was brutal. Then the ACC was even worse. At that time, there were about 8 teams in the ACC with 5 of them from NC. I believe Swafford was head of NC but I'm not for certain.

He was the AD at UNC and regardless of his defense,

there is no way a crowd of academic representatives from the member schools would have voted the extended penalties on Clemson without their AD's knowledge and concurrence. Period.

By the way the initial supporters of Clemson were Wake and Maryland, both of whom believed additional penalties to be patently unfair...which they were.

Swofford was AD from 1980 to 1997. Clemson was hated then as now in our conference. You can not forget that our own administration at that time did only cursory service to come to the aid of Coach ford and his program.

your memory may be a little fuzzy

there have always been 4 schools from NC in the ACC, and there have never been more than 4 teams from NC in the ACC.... (unless you count Wake Forest twice because it moved from the town of Wake Forest to Winston-Salem in '56)

The wrong kid died. Can we trade for his late brother who sang this?
