BUT per the rules, even if he were out if bounds he could have still punched the ball out and caused the touchback

Only if he had touched the ball after it was lose would the ball have been out of bounds

Can any rules / officiating gurus confirm this?

I hear tar heel fans chirping that they were screwed on this play

and i dont know if i ever seen one that close, a half inch on any given direction, ball, or body part, and its a TD. One of greatest plays in tiger history imho.

How was Wiggins not the player of the game??? That play completely changed the game. Up to that point it was looking ugly and a switch flipped on both sides after that play. Plus Wiggins had the incredible Int to seal the game.

A gamecock defense lineman and do the same thing. It was about to be about a 90 yard pick 6. Believe it was 2006. We ended up losing anyway

And a good way to explain to to folks complaining is to ask what they think should happen on any run where a defender is out of bounds and touches the ball while in the possession of an offensive player. I can’t imagine they’d argue the offensive player should be ruled out of bounds.

Wiggins never had possession of the ball. Therefore, it does not matter where Wiggins was when he touched the ball.
