The OL issues that dont change at CU

Minimum number of scholarships for this position group so any injury creates shifting people around to other positions. No push on 3rd and 2 plays. It has become a passing down because we get no push whether the D loads up or not. It was this way w Austin, Robbie, and before. We can almost never knock anyone off the ball when we have to

It's frustrating and confusing at the same time. We had all these elite athletes that took us to 6 CFL playoffs. But the O line was our weak point. Always has been. Just don't understand why you know

Many have said during those years we had warts that generational talent hid. Both in roster and coaching. We were fortunate that we played weak competition and were able to rest guys for the championship November run. Rest =less injuries and better depth.

This won't be popular, but like it or not, we wouldn't have had that great run if we played in the sec. I think most know that deep down.

We also went through an incredible stretch of probably pure luck on the injury front. We pretty much had continuity in most all positions group.

So winning multiple times against SEC opponents during our national championship seasons means we wouldn’t have won those national championships if we were members of the SEC?

And what teams don’t win a natty without the blessing of no injuries?

Alabama would have one less championship if Colt McCoy did not get injured.

Probably one less from 2015 too if Alexander didn’t get hurt.

We had 6 games in 2015 decided by 10 or less prior to the CFP.

We had 7 games decided by 7 or less in 2016 prior to the CFP.

We beat 6 ranked teams in 2017.

I’m not really getting this narrative of every game being easy during that run. The SEC sure was hard for Bama in 2018 when they destroyed everyone they played up until Clemson.

We had a fabulous record against the SEC during our national championship runs. I’ll let you spend the time looking it up. I’m looking to the future. Those two national championship trophies are where they belong in Clemson South Carolina.

When you only carry 15 in that room, injuries, guys that don’t pan out, can really make you thin really quickly. Do what your peers do.

I’ll say it again…… Zero reason why the OL is not elite at a school like Clemson.

I suspect any top-flight OL Coach will demand the room size be increased a small bit

I'd asked some of you in the other thread if Dabo had ever been asked. I was wrong. I thought 15 was good until I started checking good p5 teams and the next lowest I could find was ocryo st at 18... and maybe that was just this year. Even mizzou carries 20.

Media needs to ask, unless you all have the answer. Thanks.

Well ask your self

If you had room in the class and you had the choice of

A 2 star OL

Or

A 4 star any other position, what are you choosing?

I think the answer is we just can’t recruit the type of OL recruits to a degree that it makes sense to take them over the talent at other positions that want to come to a Clemson.

CU

We should be able to recruit enough of those kids. Particularly at a school like Clemson. It’s just been CDSs Philosophy to keep it at 15 which does not match any of our peers. It’s a choice not something we are doomed to be stuck with. Our peers… Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State don’t seem to have a problem getting great players across all position groups. Honestly, we have been recruiting better along the OL in the last few years. However, we are not getting enough volume… Particularly this year.

Again, zero excuse for the OL room not to be elite at a school like Clemson. If you really believe that great teams are”built from the inside out“…. Then our OL should mirror our DL. This happens at all of our peers

True, good point. However, on paper, the last 4 years prior to this cycle we've inked our highest rated olineman. But even Bama and uga struggle at evaluating.

I hope and pray it's a developmental problem because Bryn Tucker was heavily recruited by Bama and uga. Leigh recruiting list was a who's who. Mayes had great schools. Were all these schools just missing? I don't think they were. If we carried more, stats say one of those 3 stars will be the acorn.

I don’t keep up with the numbers so I’m seriously asking, but is 15 just what we normally carry or was that just the number for this season? Same question for other programs. I could see a situation where one team has a bunch of seniors on the OL so they carry more OL than normal for that season with extra freshman from the prior class in preparation of losing several OL the next year. I could also see a reverse of that situation where a team has more underclassman in the 2 deep so they carry a few less overall because they aren’t expecting to lose as many to the draft vin the next year or 2.

I think it's the norm because I heard the same concern, and similar posts even during our incredible run. But honestly it fell on deaf ears because, well, incredible run.

Reading recommend numbers for different offenses, the Tigers carry 15 OL which is in range of the 14 - 18 that most schools carry.

Spread to Run Offense - recommended OL
14 - 18 (primary run block - bulldozers)

Spread to Pass Offense - recommended OL
14 - 18 (primary pass block - quick feet)

Pro Style Offense - recommended OL
14 - 18 (run and pass block - most athletic)

Two more OL means two less elsewhere.

Part of the knocking people off the ball is the shotgun formation. It gives the LB’s and safety’s time to come up and fill the gaps. We need to go under center more with a two back set.
