What could possibly be in the ACC contract that needs to be secret?

I would have assumed the contract plainly states the amount of money espn will pay the ACC and little else. What more could it include?

I have wondered the same? Plus I would have thought that every school would have seen a copy of the contract since every school signed the GOR contract or at least voted for it however that worked. Why would schools agree to contract without reviewing it?

Probably payments to ACC administrators and terms in which ESPN could dump the contract.

This is it. The fine print that sinks hooks into the member schools in case they try to leave and how the terminology of the contract defines who controls those hooks

This is probably a good bet! I know I read that Raycom paid ESPN in the neighborhood of $50mil for TV rights which totally offset some of ESPNs financial obligations.

I don't know why people keep insisting that this is unusual. Back then, ESPN syndicated games from all the conferences signed with them, including the SEC. Someone was going to get the syndication contract, whether it was Raycom or someone else.

Intellectual property contracts are often complex because of the nature of what you are dealing...while playing with your computer have you ever read the contract for Windows 10! It may that ESPN and the ACC entered into a good faith contract that everyone signed and were happy with (don't think our president Clements is a fool) until someone larger with more bargaining power got a better one and certain members needing more money to buy themselves a football team decide they want out! Those members can slander everyone dealing with the original and subsequent wonderful contracts to get a lean in a court...that's who you would like to do business with? Now someone has to formally reread the same contract they went over before to make the public think we were cheated! ESPN should be more careful the kind of folks they do business with! Why are the other conferences not suing! Makes me wonder about my Alma mater!

That was to 3rd & 4th tier games that few want to see anyway! Question for you contract jumpers...you pay me $100 for every butt in a seat at Bryant Denny when Bama plays Ole Miss and I will pay you $100 for every butt in a seat when CCC plays BC in Alumni Stadium at Chestnut Hill! Bet you won't go for that and neither would ESPN...it's all about $$$!

There wasn't any expense with regard to the Raycom deal. If it wasn't Raycom, it would have been FSS, CSS, etc. ESPN had syndication contracts for everyone back then.

Many contracts dealing with commercial interests are kept confidential...if your competitors knew what you were willing to spend or how much you were willing to take it would give them a huge advantage in future contract negotiations! Go ask the car dealer from whom you purchase new vehicles exactly how much he pays for that new Ford F150 Lariat...chances are he can't tell you even if he wanted to! And intellectual property is much more complex than cars! And if ESPN was not making much money cause the ACC has too many empty seats neither side wants that published! If you didn't read it the first time when you signed it why now...SEC and BIG got more money...green eyed monster!

As a public state institution Clemson must follow FOIA and I don’t think there’s a FOIA exception in S.C. for media contracts.

It seems odd that a state supported institution like Clemson University could, through an outside organization, (ACC) enter into a contract involving hundreds of millions of dollars without anyone in state government knowing anything about how the contract is structured. Not as a Clemson alum but as a taxpayer in SC I’m amazed. We’re not talking about nuclear secrets here.

You are correct...lawyers read it backwards and forwards before it was ever signed...because of laws that are made by them they can't say that it was heavily scrutinized before it was signed...do you really think that our university president would have heaped lavish praise on tne deal if it were a dud! It only became a dud when the SEC and BIG got more money for theirs!

Interested in your background. You have a lot of strong opinions on a contract you know nothing about.

It will show that espn has the unilateral option to extend the contract past 2026

It will also show a contractual requirement and deadline for espn to launch the acc network. It will show the contract was amended to allow for this deadline to be extended and that this amendment was signed by the commissioner of the conference without a vote of the member schools.

It probably also contemplates schools leaving or joining the acc

It’s impossible to understand the GOR agreement without the espn agreement because the GOR references the espn agreement

Even if they let you read it you probably wouldn't understand. You probably have to know a great deal about how TV deals are done to see the reason to obscure the details.

There’s probably all kinds of details about how, when, and under what conditions ESPN makes payments to the conference plus treatment of lower tier broadcast rights. For example, how the CW was brought in to take over football and basketball broadcasts. Plus, remember the ACC is an organization unto itself. The ACC constitution/formation docs provide for how it operates and who is authorized to sign contracts. I would not be surprised the president’s of each school were only provided a summary and briefing from the Commish and ACC board members about the ESPN contract.

That's true...none of us actually know...but lots of speculation about things slandering the ACC and swofford and others are thrown around like facts! All designed to make those wanting to break a contract look good and the ACC look bad before any of you have read it! Slander abounds on the FSWTC & Clemson website! How much money has been dished out over the last ten years, costs of setting up the ACC network, babysitting petulant children! How would you like to be a cameraman 6 years ago and have to not make too many shots of the stadium at FSU with few savages in it...case of Willie T. Syndrome! By winning Clemson has saved the reputation of the ACC only to slander it now!
