Mr. Neff - early congrats on being the new AD. I hope your first order of business is to ask Coach Brownell to resign. He has proven that he cannot instill confidence is his players or in the fan base. There was a post on tigernet yesterday hoping that this would be your first action. 80% of those reacting to the post favored a new basketball coach. Our program has been mired in mediocrity for years, even decades and i feel it is time for the administration and AD to state publicly a goal for our basketball program….my suggestion is top 25 in the nation consistently. If you build it the fans will come. Thanks for listening and best wishes in your new role.

As usual folks like you dont get it. We have been mediocre for 100+ years. The past few years since we updated the facility we have been better than Mediocre. A stated goal of being consistently a top 25 team is useless unless we fund the improvement. Funding = results. So if you had $10MM to spend on Clemson athletics where would you invest it? Would you put it in Soccer, football or softball were the results would be certain or would you drop it on Basketball with no guarantee of improvement given the dirty tactics of AAU coaches?

Actually this was in response to a thread from yesterday. Look at basketball attendance. The product is bad and the attendance reflects that. A supporter of Brownell yesterday gave the email address, called non supporters names, and said we should just email the office. So which way do you want it? Is there enough room in your sandbox for us to shove our heads in tbe sand too? I ask in all sincerity. All of you ole timers please enlighten us "not real fans" what we should do? Please!!!

Versus ranked teams at Clemson:
2010-2011: 1-4 2011-2012: 1-4 2012-2013: 0-6 2013-2014: 1-4 2014-2015: 1-6 2015-2016: 3-3 2016-2017: 1-9 2017-2018: 4-5 2018-2019: 1-7 2019-2020: 3-3 2020-2021: 2-1
Brownell ACC record:
First 5 years: 40-46 (.465) Last 5 years: 45-45 (.500)
Both data sets show improvement since the early part of his tenure.

Slight improvement. I'll give you that, but a program hovering around .500? I honestly believe that is everyone's issue. Is .500 as good as it gets at Clemson in basketball? And the record against ranked teams is.... not good. 18-52? (my quick math). I think people see positive flashes, but then the team goes backwards again. I think Brownell has grown stale and fans ate ready for new energy with program. But I will say thanks for digging data. Impressive!!

My question always gets back to what are our expectations
Dec 14, 2021, 8:58 AM
|
|
based on?
Under Brownell, we are a middle of the pack ACC team on average, with some years in the top third and some years in the bottom third.
But when we look at a variety of metrics, we are near the bottom of the conference: basketball expenditures, average attendance, basketball history, etc.
Based on this, finishing in the middle of the pack in the ACC shows that we are overachieving relative to our investment in the program. In other words, Brownell is doing a good job. Plus, he runs a clean program, graduates his players at an incredibly high rate, and represents Clemson well.
People say that they want us to be a top 25 program, make the NCAA Tournament every year, etc. I think that's great! I'd love that too. But I feel that it's unrealistic to want that when we aren't willing to fund and support basketball better. At some point, Clemson must decide if basketball is going to be a high priority (in other words, comparable to or at least just behind football) or merely an afterthought as it has historically been.
Just wanting to be better without a willingness to work for it (and occasionally even sacrifice other things even if they are for football) is just foolish.

The email was way to harsh for getting a response. If just saying play close attention to the basketball program for improvements including evaluating Coach Brownell would be better suited.
I would say you can win at a program like Clemson by playing by the rules and guidelines. There are programs now winning the right way under the right guidelines in the Power 5.

in terms of conference finish, recruiting, etc. He overachieves relative to those metrics, but not excessively so at this point.
My issue lies in the fact that his assistants are paid less than the national average. How can you expect us to have a top 25 program when the budget we give our coach for assistant coaches is 175th or less (given 350 division 1 teams)?!?
In terms of ACC rank, our total basketball program expenditure are near the bottom of the conference. We finish about 6th-7th on average in the ACC under Brad in terms of wins. How much more are you expecting him to overachieve relative to Clemson’s willingness to fund the program?
Reading responses here, you would think that we have invested heavily in basketball and Brad has failed. That isn’t the case at all.
We have a perception vs. reality problem with a lot of our fans.

Which of these do you believe?
1. We do not have the right coaching staff in place. The following coaches need to be replaced: _______
2. We have the right coaches in place, but they would do a better job if their paychecks increase.
If you can’t choose one of those, then stop complaining that we don’t pay assistant coaches enough.

But when we talk about recruiting against top 25 programs, and helping with finer points of game planning, I can’t help but wonder if a top 25 budget wouldn’t help tremendously.
We saw a big improvement in our football program when we upgraded from Billy Napier to Chad Morris as OC. Likewise, we saw a big improvement when we upgraded from Kevin Steele to Brent Venables. Those guys are obviously good coaches, but the added budget for better assistants was crucial to our success. It stands to reason that the same would likely hold true for our basketball program.
I don’t know why this is so difficult for you to understand.

Either choose 1 or 2.
If you choose 1… then what coaches should be replaced?
If you choose 2…Why would they magically do a better job when they get paid more?
And since you brought up football, I’ll remind you again that in the early years Dabo took money from his own salary to pay his assistants more. Seemed to work out pretty well for him. Has BrownL tried that?

Ok I'll answer your question even though you didn't ask me.
The answer is 1.
The only way Clemson performs to your ridiculous expectations is if we:
Fire brownell and hire coach k out of retirement. We will let him hire all of the assistant coaches he needs regardless of budget.
Then we connect with a team of boosters and shoe companies so that we can pay our players to come to Clemson.
After we do this we should easily make the tourney every year and compete with the blue bloods every year. Anything less is unacceptable

We’ve got a 12 year sample size to know that’s not happening with the current coach.

I don't think you can enjoy Clemson basketball as long as brownell is our coach. You constantly bash him and only spell his name as brownL.
I've really enjoyed watching Clemson basketball these last 5 years. Last year's regular season was one of the best we have ever had. We beat a record 8 NCAA tourney teams. I'm sure you had fun watching that, right? It was a disappointing end to the season, but does that really ruin the entire season for you? The sweet 16 run was awesome. The down year we had in 2019 still was exciting where we beat 3 top 6 teams and beat UNC in chapel hill.
Brownell is a solid coach. He's a very average recruiter, but that is improving w/ facilities and hopefully continued NCAA tourney appearances. We also are not stagnant. Barring unexpected transfers, we should be better next year. Our incoming recruiting class is one of the best he has had. Brownell has also proved he can benefit the team with transfers.

I actually like Brad. Have met him a couple times. Pretty cool guy. I just can’t stand watching bad and boring basketball, and I really can’t stand excuses.
Enjoyed his first season (with OP’s players), and it’s been downhill from there with the exception of one short-lived moment of excitement a few years ago.
Time for a refreshing change.

Statements like this makes it seem like you don't follow basketball very closely.
It hasn't been all downhill from there. It went downhill immediately after year 1 because Purnell left the cupboard bare with all average to below average players.
Brownell has accomplished more at Clemson than Purnell ever did.

Is upgrading assistants going to make CBB a better strategic coach and more inspirational? The comparison to the football scenario is apples to oranges. There are 10 times more parts to a football program than a basketball program.

and better players... at least better coached players. Basketball is unlike football.. you don't need to be some sort of "P5" upper tier to build a good program. A good program in this solid conference should be able to win more then 2 tournament games every 11 years.
Point is, we have enough money. More money is not needed to make a perennial top 25 team. We have enough money, resources, facilities etc. to build from the inside out, that is, coaching and program development.
The basketball program is lacking nothing from the outside in. We can do much better in basketball, and 11 years is obviously enough time to show some upward results. I honestly like Brad Brownell a lot and wish he could succeed and move us upward, but another year with no tournament wins should mean the end of the tenure. Agreed?

So why haven’t you run for the job or shared your communications to the athletic department here? You are pretty good at demeaning those who have a different opinion than yours. Is that what is called intolerance?

Most of us supporters communicate directly with the AD not on T-net with the uninformed and undereducated. BTW where did you play D-1 basketball? I'm guessing nowhere!!

The fans pay the bills through IPTAY donations and ticket sales. So , yes the CUAD will listen to IPTAY members.
I am going to ask again. What does Clemson basketball need to be a consistent top 25 program?

to the wrong person. I would be interested to hear what Dabo Swinney's and Mike Noonan's thoughts are on the subject. They both clearly know what it takes to be champions.

I would start with a new coach. Is there anyone on this board who is confident of CBB’s coaching ability in the last 10 minutes of a game? It is the coach’s lone responsibility to instill confidence in their players to perform their best at the end of games. Has CBB done that? Which part of the game do our players play the best? Year after year and roster after roster it is the same.

I think it is successful relative to the funding and support it receives.

Plus, it is also a well run program in terms of player conduct and academics.

I’ll be honest I get tired of the money excuses. But I understand what you mean.

The sad part is we are mere inches so to speak or points away from being where I’d like. How many close games have we lost . You’re talking like 5 points a few games each year from being in the tournament regularly. Money isn’t going to make that difference. Get a little fire in your belly, coach just a touch harder, something. The ones we are losing by 20 or 30 pts I get it we are outclassed. But win those close ones.

Yet again, funding and support do not win games.

How many times in your life will you use those tired excuses? They simply are not logical, let alone the fact it's not true. We could throw 10x the money st basketball and it will do nothing to change the losses.
Regardless, we have enough money and support. It boils down to one thing and one thing only - coaching.

Where will you plant the corn field so this miracle of a coach can come out of the field to thousands of fans chanting Top 25, Top 25 etc…
Clemson needs to get the athletic program back on sound financial ground before addressing Coach Brownell or investing more $$$$$$$ into basketball. I have to admit I am a Brownell supporter. I know the history of Clemson mens basketball. We have been climbing up hill for a long time. Maybe with Coach K retiring Clemson can move up the ladder and win more games.
IMO firing a coach is not always the answer. I do agree more money is needed but where will it come from during hard times.??

Put the coach aside for a minute. Is there something that CUAD/IPTAY needs to provide to basketball. I have never felt that Clemson has asked our athletes to settle for less than best. That is why I have continuously donated to IPTAY. What does a Duke basketball player have available to him that a Clemson player does not?

The Hon Judge Keller has the answer to that question. He has surveyed the situation at great lengths and is the resident expert. I think for him It boils down to money, fans, and facilities.

Thanks. I hope that he responds because I am sincerely curious. I know that MBB is a different beast because of the one and done players. I am hoping to learn more about the current situation at Clemson.

And besides, in Coach B's type of job, you don't resign, they key is to get "fired". That way you get the rest of your contract money and then retire to a no State Tax State. If you quit, no money.

I wish the profiles would show our ages, and a way to filter by age...I definitely don't need to hear some 15-20 year old's opinion on most of the subjects discussed here! By the same token, maybe the young bucks would like to filter us old farts out! That's ok too!

Funny. Look closer. I’m not ashamed of my graduation year….1971. That was back when male Clemson students were gentlemen with manners. Unlike a lot of younger name calling tneters on thi board.

It's really pathetic to not only send this kind of low class tantrum to an AD, but to also post his email address publicly on here. Whether its available online or not isn't the issue. It's all really childish, selfish, and pathetic. He will probably have to have the administration change his email address now and going forward use a secretary for emails like Dabo does.
