Extra discussion about FSU snub

Regardless what Kirk Herbstreit thinks and what he is tweeting about, there are multiple things you could point out to an FSU fan that would make them shut up.
For one, would you rather play FSU or Alabama at this very moment (without Jordan Travis)? Case closed.
You did not dominate anybody besides mid tier ACC teams. No you didn’t dominate LSU.
You did not beat #1 Georgia in the conference championship. You did not beat a team that had won 29 in a row. You did not beat a back to back champion. You beat an average Louisville team 16-6. If you want to talk about most deserving, Alabama is more deserving based on their quality of wins. Especially in the conference championship.
Another reason why the initial 4-team playoff was implemented was also to give “better” teams who are not as “deserving” the chance at winning the title. In contrast to the Poll era and the BCS era. In those times, the teams with the best records won or got a chance. Not the best teams though. At least not every year.
Additionally, FSU was certainly not out of the playoff for certain in the scenario of Alabama winning. FSU still could’ve gone and won by 50 and showed that they were capable of beating a playoff team with their 3rd string. But again, they won 16-6.
These and many other points also qualify into the “most deserving” evaluation.
If FSU played Texas, I see FSU losing that as well. It’s hypothetical, but looking at the hardest teams both teams had to play, Alabama had very much more difficult opponents. So you have to consider that hypothetical of FSU vs Texas.
By the way FSU, you were given a prove it game in Miami for the Orange Bowl. Be happy. Just make sure the players have as much fun as possible, because the game won’t be a good time due to Kirby not taking it easy.

FSU played LSU just as well as Alabama did.
They beat Louisville with their third string QB. You do know he won’t be starting their next game.Bama struggled badly vs USF when they played their second and third string QBs. USF is bad.
Texas beating FSU is just a guess.

Did you answer the first question about who you’d rather play?
Lol, I know you wouldn’t say FSU.
They won’t put another TCU team in. FSU with a backup is equivalent to TCU last year, probably worse.

Bama in 2018 was the best team of all time. It's literally all we heard that year.
We took the foot off the gas in the 4th qtr and beat them 44-16.

Explain the TCU argument to me - I just don’t get it. They made the championship game. Is the argument that because they lost badly they don’t deserve to be in? By that logic, 2019 Bama should not have made the playoff. We curb stomped them. Why is the argument not about Michigan who TCU beat?
To me, this is just more evidence that this is an exhibition series for ratings.

It’s not just his argument. I heard the same comment on ESPN that the sponsors do not want another TCU-GA title game. Like I said elsewhere in this thread, the CFP is an exhibition series. It is sold as the best way to decide a true national champion, but in reality it is just a new version of the old bowl beauty contest.

Bama got physically pushed around by Auburn. Explain that… and then rethink your suggestion that you’d rather play FSU than Bama…

Bama, was 4th and 31 against a team that lost for new mexico state by 21+ points. A hail mary sprinkled dust throw that majically farted its way into a Alabama players hand. (i know they won the game) but if Auburn had a pulse on defense they wouldnt have gotten three #### chances to get beack in the game within the last 5 mins of the game. Lets talk about Georgia. they were a good defense away from losing 3 or 4 games this year. Instead everyone lined up against them and played with there eyes half closed.
FSU. wasnt much better they barely won against clemson (clemson gift wrapped the game for them). I watched the ACC championship game. It wasnt pretty but it was a defensive battle where 2 teams used chunk plays to win games all year.
But the reality is FSU went undefeated. (SHUT UP BAMA FANS) with your cookie cutter schedule.
The same thing happened to ohio state one year they lost there star player. And they made it in over other deserving teams... Then got destroyed in the CFP by clemson.
I still think it was the fact that OH #### where about to lose out on SEC team being in the playoff. When just the week before they were talking about putting 2 in over an FSU even before they played the ACC champ game.
I dont care who you are... Let that #### happen to Bama and see if they get left out... Half of ESPN would have heart attacks... finebaum would grow and lose all his hair again... and bear bryant would roll over in his grave.
The fact is until its all a moot point now becuase no matter the results this is always gonna be concidered a tainted year. and FSU can claim a championship for being undefeated.

Who are you trying to convince? Everything you stated been discussed at length and had rebuttal arguments. The people who believe FSU was snubbed still believe they were snubbed. The people who believe that FSU did not get snubbed still believe they did not get snubbed .

Fine. That's certainly one way to look at it

Your point seems to boil down to a simple question... "Who'd you rather play?" That's fine, and I get that point of view.
However, I'd argue a different question should come first... "What is the purpose of the playoff?" It seems your answer (judging by your initial question) is "to pit the teams who are playing best at the moment or are 'most dangerous'." I don't want to put words in your mouth, but I think that is a good guess based on the "best" argument being thrown about. My answer is considerably different. I think the whole reason a playoff exists is to remove the doubt about who should be champion that existed when we could only pick 2 teams.
To me it comes down to disregarding the fool's errand of determining "best" and instead crowning a champion for a whole season. No one, in any other sport I am aware of, uses the term "best" (in anything other than a colloquial manner or in an argument) to determine or name their champion. Rather there is a path, on the field based on wins and losses and not arguments, for every team to get to the title.
We have proven that this year that asn undefeated FSU team cannot be champion purely and 100% based on impression and opinion. That is simply not good, in my estimation, for the sport.

Well a quick example would be the New York Jets.
With Aaron Rodgers, they are incredibly likely to have a much better record than they do.
But they are not in playoff contention currently, and it’s a high percent of chance that it has to die with Rodgers’ absence.
I understand your point, and that’s an example in a league that allows team records solely to dictate their destiny.
But, like it or not, the CFP committee is asked to practice a subjective assessment of the 4 teams they want to put in. And they use multiple criteria that involve subjectivity. Because they use this type of process, this allows them to do what they did to FSU.
And it would be done in any sport if allowed.
You take Lennon James off of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015, they don’t beat Golden State in the finals. Nor do they even make it to the finals. And if the NBA used a subjective approach, assuming Lebron got hurt before the playoffs, they’d probably be left out.
Lot of random hypotheticals, but it’s a good point.

And you did make a good point.
But every reason that has been given for excluding FSU from the playoff could have been applied to Michigan - and they didn't lose their starting quarterback. The media just assumes that Big 10 play is on a higher level.
I disagree.

Well if Michigan lost McCarthy and beat Iowa 16-6, they may be left out as well.
Besides, what do you mean? Michigan won against Penn State and Ohio State.
If they had got in, they would’ve had lots of support to prove it. The wins, and the fact that they have hands down the best defense in the country.
FSU is comparable, WITH Travis
QB is one of the top needs to win a playoff. And the backup didn’t prove it like Cardale Jones did in thr BIG10. Championship before getting selected as the last team in. Since people want to make that argument.

Maryland team by 7 just three weeks before with their full squad. And again how come the Auburn game does not disqualify Bama? Auburn proved they were awful all year. They want their cake and eat too. And if you don’t think this will not be an all sec Bama/Texas final you are crazy. They want that to happen and it will.

SEC! SEC! SEC!
I guess we are seeing the real coots come out. Living vicariously through Bama.
Bama was supposed to boat race us every time we played them as well. How did that turn out. This is why you earn it and play the games.

If Alabama doesn’t complete that last pass against Auburn, do they get in? I mean…they are just as good. That one play doesn’t make them better or worse.

They evaluate each team with both eye test and most deserving.
How do you say FSU is more deserving than Alabama? Because they have one less loss? A game that Texas would be favored by 10+ points if FSU did not have Travis. Did FSU beat the #1 team?
Do you think that Clemson should’ve been snubbed after losing to Pitt late in the season? They won it all. That was a more consequential loss than Alabama losing to Texas at home and then getting better and beating Georgia.
Both are deserving. Which is when you boil down to current performance and eye test.

Bama just beat the #1 team UGA and that was first time anyone has done that in a couple years. I think the committee gave them a bunch of credit for that and rightfully so.
FSU had a better than average and very experienced QB but he’s not playing in the bowl game and the committee’s principles State they take take into account unavailable players. FSU has two really good WRs and a couple good first string Dlineman. Their OL was less than average all year. The rest of their team is average. They were overrated starting in the preseason. Certainly fortunate to get the rankings and pub they got in September and all year.
They are the HS freshman that’s really mediocre, got cut from the team and won’t stop complaining about it. Keep complaing. Looking weaker and weaker every day.

Exactly.
Still…
FSU has won an ACC Championship, and on a 20 game win streak. I will give credit there, but FSU still has not proven Jack against playoff caliber teams.
Stop complaining and go beat Georgia. And do it convincingly. And prove something to everyone.
I promise you, this is better than going to the playoff and getting smacked by Michigan.

Not true. This decision was about picking the best team. The committee picked the best team.
I didn’t think the committee would have the balls to make the right decision, but they did.

powder at this point in time. To me, two points stand out.
1) I don't think it is so much that Alabama got in as a one loss SEC Champion that ticks people off. It is the still fresh memory of that Auburn game, where they needed a literal miracle to win it on the last gasp play. Had they dominated Auburn, all other things being equal, I don't think there would have been nearly the hue and cry that exists over it.
2) As someone else stated, and FSU had to know themselves going in, they needed to make an offensive statement against Louisville in the ACC Championship Game. And, again, previous games come into play. Louisville crapping the bed against Kentucky took a whole lot of the luster off that game before it was even played. The fact that FSU could only muster 16 points against the same team that a mediocre offensive team in Kentucky torched for 38 points the previous week was an eye opener for a lot of people, myself included. FSU really took themselves out of serious consideration with that anemic performance. Because, no matter what anyone says, with their star QB out, they were not getting into the Final Four just as a placeholder, not at the expense of leaving the SEC Champion out, especially with that champion being Alabama, with the best college coach of all time at the helm looking for yet another ring. And, with Texas owning that inconvenient win over Bama, to maintain any sense of propriety at all, the Committee could not leave THEM out and put Bama in over them with FSU. So, FSU drew the short straw.
