Amateur athletes put in so much work to even qualify for the Olympics. Not saying that NBA players don’t put in work, but they have a staff and trainers and literally billions of dollars behind their work.
Olympics should celebrate the unheard athlete. The shot-put or javelin guy/gal.
Why is a billionaire carrying the flag for America? It should be a person that loves their country and puts in the work to be at the Olympics.

world's biggest shotput and javelin fan........when the US wins gold in that sport. And 2 months later not even remember what javelin is, as they are screaming at the top of their lungs at a NHL or NFL game.
Am I doing this right? I need to tune in to NBC today to see what sport I need to suddenly become an instant fan of, where we have the best chances at winning.

I don't know that any of the Olympic athletes are actaully armatures anymore. Just that some events pay well and others don't.
As far as basketball, we just did what the other countries did and when our guys don't have their head up their ### they are hard, not impossible, but hard to beat.
Nike and NBC are probably to blame for LeBron carrying the flag. I am ready for that guy to ride off into the sunset after he gets a year playing with his kid.

I mean, the Olympics as a whole.....none of these people are unpaid "amateurs" unless they do some sport or activity so obscure nobody sees value in paying them....kinda like....shotput and javelin.
Should we not send our best to an every 4 year international competition?
Lebron might just be carrying the flag because he's the most successful and recognizable athlete in America, and possibly in the entire Olympics. Why TF shouldn't he be carrying it?
Yall want some steeplechase MF carrying the flag and getting press? Ok cool, but I ain't watching that.

Dude still has some miles left in him and I'd bet will take on more of a distributor/floor general role like Magic did towards the end.
He ain't the best player in the world anymore but I'd still put him squarely in the top 15.

Also, LJ doesn't just GET the spotlight and attention and money. He EARNS it. Has earned it. Came from the same or arguably worse conditions as a youth than most US Olympians I'd venture to guess.
I mean, I suppose we could have chosen Rachel Sung from table tennis....but like why?
