I want to really truly 100% believe the coach-speak but when he mentions Koby (LB) and Cade (DE) and says they are functional, man I don't know. I saw them last year look really, really bad.

Im right there with you. We've all heard Dabo do this for years now only to not have his praise pan out during the season. Hopefully these guys have really turned the corner and can contribute.

Yeah, typical spring and fall camp Dabo speak. Every year he picks several back-up players and highlights their progress. He's a master at trying to keep the whole team engaged and competing until the season starts. Then by the end of the year they haven't had many snaps and are usually the ones that transfer down a level.
I've learned to accept players x are the best version of themselves doesn't typically translate into them being a superstar.
It's a total opposite presser than Brad brownell. Brad digs deeper into the x and os, break down the game etc. I don't glean anything from Dabo's presser or media days. He's a perpetual optimist which is a respectable trait but it's just not real world.

Here we go! Get ready for a weekly dose of PBT calling out players and coaches. Didn't expect him to start bashing 2wks before our first game.

“Functional” is a far cry from the perfection some on this site demand. Blocking sleds are also functional.

Functional isn't that high of praise. Maybe they are functional with the new DC. Doesn't sound like a glowing endorsement.

They will only see the field if absolutely necessary (injury, blowouts, etc.). Functional is a politically correct term for the bare minimum requirements to perform.

Neither of those two are going to make the 2-deep. Denhoff is a bust, along with Zaire Patterson.

Bottom line is you cannot have 2 deep of All Conference players at every position. The job of coaches is to take functional players, teach them, develop them, win with them and over his career, Dabo has done a great job with that.

If only character were something one could simply find instead of having to painstakingly build.
