The Other Priester

Feb 7, 2013, 2:16 PM

While I am excited to see what this young WR is going to do once he joins the team this summer, as well as the rest of this class of football signees, I noticed the article on TI about another Priester from Clson past.

I do not have a TI subscription, so I could not read the article, but the title looks back in Clemson history to the 20 year anniversary of Raymond Priester signing his LOI with the Tigers and the fact that 20 years later he still sits upon the top of our career rushing list.

I had the pleasure of playing along side Pre for 3 of his 4 seasons as a Tiger. He was a monster of a power running back. And no disrespect to my former teammates, but we had significantly less talent then than now and Ray shined in those not so bright years. He would bust through tackles, losing balance, and seemingly bound on one hand for another 6 or 7 yards. He was simply a hard-nosed, north-south, physical back who made us look better than we were at times. It was a joy to watch him run and play along side him. He worked hard and was a good man off the field as well as on the field.

I just wanted to shine a little light on one of the best running backs to grace Clemson's backfield ever, who rarely gets the credit he deserves. We have been a little spoiled of late with offensive talent. Pre was a grown man out there and he will always be one of my favorite Tigers!

One of my proudest moments as a fan was coming to his defense when the Sporting News dared to label him as overrated or a disappointment early in the 96 season. They actually printed my letter that helped them realize he was running into 8-9 man fronts regularly with little to no passing game help at the time. He was probably the least heralded of that running back class that had Downs and Pegues in it.

He did get drafted

He was a late round pick by the Giants I believe. Think he made it a year or so before hanging it up. Just didn't have the speed for the NFL.

favorite moment:

1997 against UNC (one of their best ever teams) we had a 3rd and short down near the hill end of the field. I was at the other end, and sitting low so my view wasn't great. UNC fans were in that corner where the band now sits, and they cheered loudly when he got hit short of the sticks.
Hearing their cheer turn to a groan as he powered through the tackle and got the first down was priceless.
