First play of the game on offense

Aug 29, 2017, 6:27 AM

KB drops back and hits a streaking Cain down the sidelines for a 50 yard touchdown. (Because we returned the punt to the 50. Go Tigers! It's going to be a great year!

Give it some thought. The best way to start building KB's confidence is a short, quick throw to someone, most likely Renfrow or Cain. My guess, though? Read run option, and he keeps it around the end for 30 yards. ;)

If anyone has ever watched CLEMSON, then CJ will carry the ball on the first play. I think it could almost be called 'traditional'.

But - the NEXT play will be our kicker kicking it thru the EZ. :)

The only problem with that is I don't see Kent state getting that much pressure on our QB to force that many types of run.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

pressure not an issue - I agree!

Aug 29, 2017, 11:53 AM

I am pointing more to the fact that KB likes to run with the ball - and with the defense chasing our receivers, and their d-line botled up, KB will take off running..... a lot

1st play, KB runs in the teeth of the defense for no gain. Ooops, we're playing Kent St, KB runs straight into the teeth of Kent St defense for a 2 yd gain.;)

If we feel the need to "flea flicker" vs Kent State, then ..

Aug 29, 2017, 8:32 AM

... then it's liable to be a long season.

In fact, if we make substantial changes to an offense that has been highly successful through Tajh Boyd, Deshaun Watson, and yes, even Cole Stoudt, just to suit the perceived skill set of Kelly Bryant, then it will be a huge mistake.

Our 2017 QB is going to have to be able to run the Clemson offense and take advantage of the tremendously talented personnel we have surrounding him.

If he can't, then next man up.

Our offense was trash with Cole Stoudt at QB in almost every game.

Substantial changes aren't necessary, just running more option & less straight up drop back passes, with a sprinkle of creative plays to get the ball in our playmakers hands.

You'll like it. Don't be so boring & resistant to change.

You have to adjust to what you have. If you don't, you're stupid.

Wrong on almost all counts ...

Aug 29, 2017, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Re: If we feel the need to "flea flicker" vs Kent State, then .. ]

There is nothing boring about the Clemson offense.

What would be boring, stupid (and tragic) would be to see us go away from the offense we recruited for in order to make Kelly Bryant more comfortable.

He will either have to run the offense, or someone else will come in and do it.

Personally, I believe Kelly is going to do fine, but it's going to be because he improved his all-around game, not because we started doing dumb stuff like flea flickers and leaning on a steady diet of the option while ignoring 5-star WRs.

PS: Cole ran the offense just fine when he was finally healthy and had a coaching staff that trusted him and instilled confidence in him.

Was he healthy against Georgia? #AskingForAFriend

He's a quote from Tony Elliot:

"Deshaun taught us a valuable lesson in that you have to build the system around the quarterback first. Each QB is going to have their own flavor and then within the package you basically have plays that kinda fit all the different personalities. But there are core fundamentals of our offense we have to run.”

He calls the plays fyi

The last sentence of your quote states it pretty succinctly.

And yes, Cole was healthy against UGA, and he was healthy again against Oklahoma. The difference was against Oklahoma he had a coaching staff in place that believed in him and built his confidence.

Anyway, this conversation is getting old.

We'll wait until Saturday and see how many flea-flickers we run and what percentage of the offense is based on the true option vs what we've been doing for years.

If you're right, I'll come back and give you credit.

Here's to Kelly Bryant shining in all aspects and having 250-300 yard through the air.

Sounds good.

FYI, I don't really anticipate any flea flickers. That was a joke.

& I don't anticipate a ton of option against Kent ST

But against Auburn we will run tempo, & I anticipate it to be a very effective part of that gameplan. 1 or 2 a quarter, as opposed to less than 1 a game last year.

I agree that the offense won't change, just more emphasis on the option because Kelly Bryant is at QB.

Depends on where the ball is spotted and the alignment of the D. If we start from the seven YL the call is much different than if we start on the fifty.

Re: First play of the game on offense will not happen until

3rd possession of the game. D forces fumble and scoops it up for TD. We KO deep into the end zone. Second play from scrimmage for Kent St Flyin" Ryan Carter picks off a floater in the middle of the field and races down the sidelines for our second TD. Then we see our Offense take the field.

I hope our offensive coordinators have another play in their book because you guys have already opened up our play book to Kent State. I can imagine the Kent State staff already checking this thread and planning their defense. I can see it now, a QB sack, a three yard running play loss or an intercepted pass. Please. please., please, don't give them any info on what our defense plans to do or we will be coming out on the short end of the score.
