Regarding the question about what the ACC can do to help itself....

Is it possible for the administration to overcome the teams sucking?
The answer is "no." The programs of the ACC have thoroughly chosen impotence despite the power moves by the administration to make the conference a behemoth. Miami, Virginia Tech, FSU, Georgia Tech, Boston College, etc... had their chances to elevate or stay elite. They all took hard nose-dives. FSU deserves a more credit than the rest... but their drop from prominence was terribly timed.
The BIGGEST blame goes to Miami. Virginia Tech was good when the rest of the conference descended into joke territory... but it is crazy the massive collapse of the ACC when we looked to be the premier football conference in 2004.
In 2003, Miami had finished 5th and nearly (bad call) won the natty the year before. FSU had won a natty a couple years before. Virginia Tech had climbed into the top 5 during in the middle of the 2003 season. Clemson looked to have turn a corner finally beating FSU, and going on a crazy run after the lip-quiver, finishing ranked and beat a #6 Tennessee team in the Peach Bowl.
In 2002 NC State and Maryland finished in the top-15, so their relevance was still on the radar.
In the 2004 Preseason AP poll the ACC had 4 teams in the top 16. 2 in the top 6.
A year later, ONLY the new additions (Boston College, Virginia Tech and Miami) were in the top 20 by the end of the season. So the administration was the only reason the ACC had a SINGLE top-20 team in 2005.
Then by 2006 the ACC essentially committed harakiri. Our highest ranked team was Weak Florist and they ranked 18th. Not a single top 15 team. We were officially a joke at that point.
Did the next year help? Nope. In 2007 the only top 15 teams were Boston College (10) and Virginia Tech(9). The old ACC completely died.
2008 was the same. Everyone sucked except Virginia Tech. And they were 15th in the final AP poll. Nothing higher.
2009 we barely cracked the top 10. Virginia Tech again. Paul Johnson's triple option Georgia Tech also cracked the top 15 that year.
And to finish off the death of the conference, in 2010, we didn't have a single team in the top 15. Again.
The teams sucked. The institutions themselves killed the reputation of the conference for a whole generation.

Teams like BC, Cuse or to a lesser extent VT have a ceiling based on geography. They can improve but it means investment in top tier coaches, facilities and NIL. They will never be an Alabama or LSU but could be competitive. Won't be easy and as we have seen with the coots, more money does not guarantee success.

Virginia Tech admittedly has not kept up with facilities. Not sure why because they have fielded some really good teams in the past. Never know what has or is happening there behind closed doors but football does not seem to be king anymore.
BC and Cuse have been a joke minus a few good years with Matt Ryan. Those 2 were never going to move the needle in football.
Louisville and Miami have really disappointed as far as additions. Not sure what to say about either besides stupid coaching hires I’m guessing.
Ga Tech, and younger folks probably have no idea was really solid in football. Never great, except what ‘91, but a tough out anytime you played them.

I totally disagree. Clemson once had geographic issues. We couldn’t recruit outside a small footprint we didn’t invest a ton of money or hire a big name coach. We promoted an unknown that turned into a big name. Dabo pushed for investment and bought our facilities to the forefront
VaTech has great facilities. They have a great atmosphere and stadium. They are also poised for a breakout season. They lost a legend. Your take is kinda short sided.
How many ranked big 12 teams are there? How many B1G? We all know the sec gets votes because Disney owns the sec and the narrative. How’s our record vs the mighty “other” conferences under Dabo? Fantastic.
The ACC isn’t as far behind as you claim. 7-5 vs the almighty sec last season. Any ACC team could strike gold with a Dabo like hire and timely investments. Many are on the way up. I counted just as many ACC teams in bowls last year as any other conference. FSU got hosed out if a playoff bid.
The ACC is fine. Clemson and fsu will cause Disney to renegotiate tv deals and all will be happy. The ACC will continue to win their fair share of natty’s. I guess you forgot the ACC has the second most behind the sec in the playoff era. Everyone seems to.
I wanted to give you a TD. I barely wanted to give a response because it’s lazy thinking. I dare say the ACC will be here and stay more relevant than the big 12.

The ACC leaders made a few mistakes over the years

1.) should have stayed out of the North East. The calculated move to gain TV eyeballs up there and increase in Basketball teams was a huge predictable mistake. They simply do not care about college football. Should at least never taken Cuse and BC. I'm 50/50 on Pitt. 2.) the half marriage with ND is awful. It is propping them up to stay independent. 3.) if adding Pitt, should have taken WV. Athletic Conferences have nothing to do with academics, none of us care. 4.) When there was clear signs the BIG 12 was in trouble and talk of expansion was going on, the ACC should have pressed hard for Texas, Okla, Okla State to go to 16(with Pitt). and then when Big 10 blew up the PaC 12 by taken those teams, should have imploded the BIG 12 so the Pac 12 could have stayed relevant and the ACC could have had almost sole TV presence in Texas, okla to go with the rest of the south by adding any 4-8 of these to go to 20-24 (Baylor, TCU, KState, Kansas, UCF, SMU, Cin(for Louisville,Pitt,WV), Houston)
I know getting Texas and okla was a stretch but if acted quickly enough could have happened. I would rather of had a intact Pac 12 than a Big 12 with a stronger ACC
what would a TV deal for the ACC look like if it was Clemson, Texas, oklahoma, oklahoma St, FSU, Miami, Pitt, WV, Louisville, UNC, NC State, Georgia Tech,UVa, Va tech,Cinn, TCU, Baylor, SMU, Kansas, Kansas State, UCF, Duke, Wake, Houston?
side note, with streaming markets are looked at differnet now though
I dont know, monday morning QBing

With all those schools mentioned, the ACC would have equal contract's as the Big and SEC, NO DOUBT!!!

It's 100% Monday morning quarterbacking. Especially the part about Texas and Oklahoma coming to the ACC. I don't care how quickly they tried to act, it is absolutely delusional to think that Texas and Oklahoma would ever come to the ACC. Look how much the current schools want to get out of the ACC, can you how the fans of Texas and Oklahoma would react if their administrations tried to get them in the ACC? They would blow an absolute gasket. It would actually be entertaining to see the kind of mutiny that you would have with those fan bases if they tried to join the ACC. Keep in mind too they already turned down the Pac-12 twice. The ACC is almost always been looked at as the lesser of the five and conferences. There's absolutely no way at all that Texas and Oklahoma would have even considered joining the ACC.

Do you think the programs mentioned thought they could remain good in the ACC with average coaching, and decided to save money. Probably not, but they surely sank fast once coming to the ACC...

I can't help but believe that part of the overall sucking that spread

lay in the poor scheduling the ACC constructed once it expanded. The forced Atlantic and Coastal splits watered down everyone's schedules with too many programs that just weren't natural fits and that many fans simply didn't care about year in and year out. It would have been much better to have simply North / Southed us all even if it resembled the old Big East and original ACC. We forced a lot of 'nobody cares a lick' contests, and the energy and excitement overall just waned, both in the programs themselves and around them.

That was a condition of Miami joining. Miami and Florida St wanted to be in separate divisions, so after that you really didn't have much of a choice.

What a sad take on life. The ACC and every other conference is about thousands of athletes getting an education and competing in the sports they love. The ACC currently has 23 sports programs and won multiple National Championships last season and there will hopefully be more this season. Universities are in the business of educating young men and women and the administrators understand that athletics are hugely important to the success of their school but that success is not defined solely by the record of the football team.

The best thing they could do is tell Jim Phillips to work with SEC, B1G, Big 12, and AAC and try to find the best possible landing spot for all the teams.
Work to get as many as possible into P2. Then work to get the rest into Big 12. Try to minimize the number left with no option except G5.

You're acting like they did this on purpose. Fir whatever reason, some of you guys can't accept the fact that the problem with the ACC is that them conference is made up of smaller schools with fewer resources. It's more difficult for these schools to win consistently.
The SEC and Big Ten have a bunch of big state flagship schools with huge alumni bases and a lot of in state talent. Schools like Georgia can win 10 games by accident. You can't do that at Wake Forest or Boston College.

Putting aside the ridiculous thing about them doing it on purpose...

Miami had one of the most elite dynasties in the history of college football. So does Florida State. Georgia Tech has history, tons of money and are in the sports capitol of the Southeast. UNC has tons of money and are well-suited for success. Virginia Tech was a solid program for decades. Clemson had one of the most impressive 8 year runs in the last half century of football.
The actual performance of these institutions, during those crucial years 2004-2010 was, collectively, WAY BELOW their capability.
People love to blame the front office, but that front office assembled a conference that was elite when it was put together. And then the programs within the conference failed.... massively.
The story of the death of the ACC was not Swofford. It isn't what happened after 2010. The ACC jumped down in the dump right when college football was exploding into a mega-sport. Bad timing for an unusually bad collective performance for half a decade. We couldn't climb out of the hole we dug.
I don't care about the ACC at all. I don't like the ACC either. But I am aware of the true reason that the conference died.

It had the possibility of being much better if Va Tech, UNC, NC State , Miami and GT were playing up to their potential on a consistent basis. Not sure why any of these couldn’t consistently be top 25-30 programs.

After Ford Clemson sure did not do the ACC any favors in being elite and there really has not been a time when Clemson and FSU have played top 10 football in the same season. Minus the time before FSU was ACC that FSU had the puntrooskie. That was definitely 2 good teams at the time. When I say top 10 I really mean both legitimately having a say in who goes to the playoffs.

Unless. It is a top 10 show down, then your biggest games seem to be rivalry games or border clashes. There is just not a lot of powerful teams with history and traditions as football powers in the ACC that provides these type of match ups. Clemson and FSU is the gold standard right now. Clemson used to play UNCheat every year and that was a good border war game. UNCheat used to also be a national power at the time. Of course, UGly, just 70 miles away was a great border clash. GT and NCST to a lesser degree. USuC was a pretty good rivalry game in the 80's. Fans had ease of travel getting to these games and a lot of excitement was created. These games were made for TV.
VT is a mystery. They looked like a perfect program to battle with as did Miami. But we and them hardly reached the level of epic in any game we played.
BC, Syracuse, Duke, WF vs ??? Not so attractive at all. ACC just doesn't have Florida-Georgia, Alabama-Tennessee, Texas A&M -LSU, etc. Lots of border clashes with very passionate fans that fill 90,000+ stadiums. Duke or BC can't even sell out there stadium when it is a top 10 match up. Anyway, just my rambling thoughts. Go Tigers!!!!

I agree but the, between the sheet with ESPiN and the SEC was exactly...
Aug 13, 2024, 5:16 PM
|
|
what finished the ACC off. ESPiN controlled sports media, always first on the scene and had the last say about which teams were ranked where. They deliberately ranked any team which played any SEC team early in the season it the top of the rankings.
That led to SEC teams wiping out the entire field with preseason rankings and early season SOS and power ranking. Year after year the pounding of "SEC," coming from ESPiN led high school players to think that the SEC was the best bar none and that led to the SEC gathering a ton of young talent.
The ACC sat on the conference hands until they grew numb. The corruption at the top from side deals with family which owned all ACC home games left ACC's management fat and happy. That was the second blow which destroyed our much respected conference.
Now Phillips is doing the exact same thing. Our conference leeches are sucking blood but soon they won't have the Orange blood to suck. They can all go suck a lemon!
Be patient, my brother, this carnival is about over.
