Since I'm NOT going to the louy-ville game

Sep 26, 2016, 9:31 AM

I'll need a new TV by the weekend.

Looking for 65-70",4K, SUHD, HDR, PM, and BMF, all for around $1500-$2000. I like the bezel less design (last Samsung had that, enjoyed)...suggestions?

Yeah, the sound is so surroundy that you can hear people yell "We shoulda got Gurley"

tangent.....I see all these pics of TVs over fireplaces

Sep 26, 2016, 9:47 AM

in magazines, online, etc. I've never actually seen this in real life. Do people REALLY do that?

How can you watch TV comfortably looking up at a 45 degree angle? Plus, do you really want your TV to have heat/smoke damage?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Two things

Sep 26, 2016, 9:58 AM

1. Yes. While it's not ideal, for some living room setups it works. From the reclined position in my lazyboy the angle is actually quite comfortable.

2. There's something seriously wrong with your fireplace if putting a TV over it will give it heat/smoke damage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

doesn't fire generate heat? Dosen't heat rise?

Sep 26, 2016, 10:09 AM

been a long time since I sat in a physics class, so maybe that's changed.

But it would seem that a TV directly over a fireplace would expose it to potential harm that it wasn't designed to handle.

can confirm

Samsung operating temp range is 50 F - 104 F.

104 still darn high for indoors. Looked this up a while back when looking at TVs for outdoors. Outdoor TVs be not for UDPs.

Thanks. Will keep that in mind.

Not sure I'm ready to pull the trigger yet on an outdoor TV yet, though. I tend to research the hell out of stuff before spending.

I gotchyour outdoor tv scoop right here

Don't overthink this purchase. Just do it RIGHT NOW.

I bought 3 new Tvs for my house like I dunno 5 yrs ago: Living room, bedroom, and outdoor one. All flat, all HD, whatevs. Spent a little extree on the living room one. Spent a little less on the outdoor one. Spent even less on the bedroom one.

Rationale was living room gets watched the most. Bedroom....meh. I'm the only one that watches it and it's usually for 15-45 min before I go to sleep at night.

Outdoor one....wanted to get a decent TV but didn't want to go all high end because outside. At the time I think I spent maybe $500. Maybe. I think it's a 48" or so. Prolly the equivalent of a $400 one now because I think prices have come down but thenagain I really don't know and don't GAF. My thought was FUGGIT if it goes bad I'll just buy another ya know because WGAF it's like a few hundy.

Ok, so the outdoor one is mounted on the outside of my house under a covered screened in porch. So it doesn't get hit by the sun and prolly only gets some sea spray when it rains. It is subjected however to hotasfuck temps and awful humidity.

5 yrs old, still rockin without a problem.

Get one, don't overthink it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What brand did you use for outdoors?

Sep 26, 2016, 12:32 PM

I've got a similar setup to yours, but it will be above a fireplace (would burning).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LG

Sep 26, 2016, 1:16 PM

but I literally put 0 effort in towards trying to figure out what would work best given the "outdoors" part of the whole deal. So I'm not real sure how much it even matters. I do keep a ceiling fan running 24/7/365, not sure if that helps but it can't hurt. The remote WILL show some effects of being outdoors though.

My screened porch is surrounded by deck and I had my deck built a step down from the screened porch in effort to keep the TV view better when outside grilling, etc. Don't matter what kinda HD you got when looking through porch screen though.

When this TV dies I'll prolly get a 48-50 incher for $300 or less and be done with it.

A friend of mine put a Sanyo 55" from Wal Mart on his

Sep 26, 2016, 1:18 PM

back porch because it was cheap, and about 3 years later he is still using it. He lives on a marsh now, so it will be interesting to see how it ages. Again, like you, doesn't matter because disposable.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks a bunch.

Sep 26, 2016, 2:56 PM [ in reply to LG ]

Maybe I'll get one for Christmas. Probably the cheapest I can find. Smart with the fan. I'll do the same during the hot months at least.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ditto on all the above. A neighbor has

Sep 26, 2016, 3:55 PM

their first flat screen on their porch (under roof) and it's been good for 4 years now.

One of these days I'll retire the old Vizio from the den to the porch when we decide to upgrade. When I do, I'll build a cabinet for it to sit in so it's closed when not in use. If you've ever been to Island Bar and Grill in Pawley's, they have them all over the back deck. It looks like a big dart board cabinet. I might even make it with an overhead rolling barn door resembling thing since that's all trendy now.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Last two houses had them over the fireplace.

Sep 26, 2016, 10:53 AM [ in reply to tangent.....I see all these pics of TVs over fireplaces ]

Clemson house had a gas fireplace, so no heat. Mt P. house was wood logs only (but no fires ever) so not a problem.

The two places I've had it like that had the main viewing seats were 10' or so back, so the angle isn't an issue. I'm not sitting on the hearth trying to watch TV.

New house doesn't have a fireplace or that big of a viewing area, so TV will be on a table or something, and be lower.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ours is only 46" and sits about 5.5 feet off the ground, so

Sep 26, 2016, 10:54 AM [ in reply to tangent.....I see all these pics of TVs over fireplaces ]

almost high enough for a fireplace....looks great with no issues, but the room is huge. TWSS.

for the costs.

Funny..the last time I was in HH Gregg was in 2012, and it was a packed store. Probably 3 different salesmen for TV's only. And they had a whole area for software and computers.

Saturday, there were about 5 people in the store. They had 1 sales person for TV's and appliances, and I didn't even see any computer stuff. Kinda looked like a rent a center with cheap leather couches, washing machines, and big screen TV's.
