Michelle Obama on racism

Dec 18, 2014, 10:14 AM

"I tell this story – I mean, even as the first lady – during that wonderfully publicized trip I took to Target, not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn't see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn't anything new."

wteffffff?????????

The store is always mega crowded. Shoppers are desperately searching for employee assistance. Someone will undoubtedly mistake me for an employee and ask where to find a certain toy. The look on their face when I simply respond, "I don't know" is priceless.

She's just playing the race card. She told a totally different version of this story years ago.

Sometimes I think it would be nice...

Dec 18, 2014, 12:58 PM

to be able to blame racism for people being stupid or a-holes, or just for anything that inconveniences me or makes me feel undervalued. But then, I remember that it would suck to look around you and constantly think that everyone was a horrible racist d-bag.

Who hasn't been mistaken for somebody who was working at a store before? The difference is that if you're not a minority, you chalk it up to something other than racism.

Some folks like Cruz, Rove, Limbaugh. etc. just keep taking cheap potshots at the families of politicians that they do not like. I think that is the case here. I can't think of a legitimate reason to do hope and I never will. May the Holiday season mellow everyone here and Go Tigers.

Thanks for the TD,

it inspires me to know that I hit a nerve. Again, it would be nice if you could rid yourself of some of the hate bottled up within you. Hope your holiday is good and love abounds. It is a great way to live when you are with loved ones. Go Tigers.

I didn't view it as a racial statement as much as typical

Dec 18, 2014, 1:24 PM

Obama elitism. She is obviously "above" helping the woman out, because she is the first lady.

They extend the term entitlement well beyond the financial aid realm. As POTUS AND FLOTUS, they are entitled to all the spoils.

deal with their own racist experiences."

I give up. If the First Lady thinks that you're racist for asking a 5'11" woman for help getting a product off a high shelf, then they see racism everywhere. I saw the picture of her in the Target store. NO ONE would confuse her for an employee. That was one person asking another for help.

That is terrible.

True story: This morning I was walking down the street, not highly disguised, and the only person who came up to me was a black woman asked me for directions to the courthouse. She just saw me as someone who could help her. As Michelle said, those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn't anything new.

Wow. Are you okay?

Dec 21, 2014, 5:05 PM

And here's one more true story. Happened just yesterday. I was at the store and a white woman asked me to reach something off a shelf.

I immediately knew how Michelle must have felt.

So one becomes a rassist to ask another person for help.

Re: Michelle Obama on racism

The point she is making is that people look at an African-American woman and think she is "the help". This shouldn't be that hard to understand. It's a problem that I've heard black people frequently experience.

I think everyone needs to relax a little and try to see things from the opposite perspective. White people and black people need to do this. And as a white guy I can think back to times when my preconceived notions of race, or prejudices if you will, could have an adverse affect on people.

Once we had some friends over who were African-American and their daughter struck me as tall and I asked her if she liked basketball. Well this offended her mom. Turns out the girl wasn't really taller. I just looked at her and thought basketball because she was black. Now I know most people here would say that is insignificant, but what if everyone who encounters that girl imagines her as the future "help" or as an athlete and no one imagines her as a doctor or lawyer simply because of the color of her skin? Neil de Grasse Tyson has talked about how this becomes a formidable obstacle to many African-Americans. And if you look at it that way you can understand why the mom was bothered by my comment.

There are lots of studies out there showing how race affects us in a lot more ways than we imagine and we need to be aware of if we have any hope of fixing it. That's the reason the Obamas are discussing it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I heard Obama talking about race the other week

Dec 27, 2014, 12:40 AM

and how race relations in the US are affecting blacks now. And thats about all I heard of his speech because I cut the TV off about 10 seconds after I turned it on.

'cause like I said then in the lounge then...he's a black dude and is the POTUS. And got elected to the gig twice. I'm a white dude and probably couldn't get voted the president of my HOA-Once.

I'm not worried about blacks and their issues. I'm a middle aged white dude in IT, and in < 10 years I'll be more unemployable than a black guy with a record, and also won't be eligible to live off the gubmint. Honestly, I have bigger fish to fry.

Dec 28, 2014, 12:39 PM [ in reply to Re: Michelle Obama on racism ]

was correct to use an example of a white woman asking her for help at a Target getting an item off of a high shelf as an example of racism that she has had to endure? You think anger at a fellow human asking for some help at a store is appropriate for the woman married to the black man that this horribly racist country saw fit to elect to lead our country?

Just out of curiosity, how would the woman in this story be considered NOT racist? Ignore Michele? Struggle to get the product herself...maybe climb some shelves? Go ask an actual Target employee for help...and if that's the proper non-racist thing to do, are there any considerations given to the various races of the employees? Any sexists considerations? This is a lot for a woman shopping at Target to consider, and I want to make sure we cover all the bases. I'm concerned that if she had struggled to get the item herself without asking the 5'11" African American woman nearby for assistance, that perhaps that TOO would be a form of racism.
