None of them had to play each other.
We have to acknowledge that the ACC schedulers did everything possible to get the most teams into the playoffs. And in many ways they have succeeded.
Notre Dame - Playoffs
SMU - Playoffs
Clemson - Win and in the Playoffs
Miami - still an outside chance
There is no way for any of these teams to say they are better than us when none of them have played us.
And I actually think we have a better chance to beat SMU than any of them. So, I consider our season a great success if we make the playoffs.

this year. ND will sooner or later have to weigh the NBC $$ vs not getting the automatic bid & bye to the CFP as a conference champion.

ND gets to rest their guys for an extra week before the playoffs 1st round.
They play a weak schedule, so they're likely to get a 1st round home game, as they'll get this year.
They have no chance to lose a conference championship game.
They get special treatment from the NCAA, the media, and the CPF committee.
They would be crazy to join a conference.
