It's important for a college coach to have players who want to play for him and the school. As competent an X's and O's schemer as Wes is, he may be an even more valuable coach because of his positive relationships with the players.

2nd. Goodwin should be better at play calling. The thing is the OC?

You should be better at trolling and only the weakest of armchair football minds would call defenses’play calling’. Goodwin at least got his calls in on time, unlike Venables

Getting his plays in on time…

…. Could that be because Venables relied on Wes to identify which defense should be used and then he called the play?
Having Wes on the “front line” removes that extra link and the plays are sent to the defense faster.

It is true that BV was late a few times getting his calls in in about every game, but BV was one of the best DC's in the entire country. I mean he may not have been voted the #1 DC, but IMO, he wasn't 2nd to any DC in the country that may have been as good as Brent Venables. If BV was to fail as a HC, He could go to any conference school that could afford him and start out making the same salary that he was being paid when he left Clemson. My old memory fails me a lot of late, but I think BV was the highest paid DC in the country when he took the HC's job at Oklahomo. It is my opinion that Wes Goodwin will need many years of on the field coaching experience before he should be put in the same category as BV when speaking of the best college DC's in the country.
Anybody that don't know how good BV is as a defensive coordinator, but if they are capable of understanding what they are reading they should research what every college FB Guru was saying and writing about the 2018 Bama offense with it being loaded with NFL talent. It was also being said that Bama had a generational talented offense, the best that they had ever had in the history of Bama's offenses. With the best ever Bama offense loaded with NFL talent, Brent Venables defense held them to 16 points in the first half, then BV's defense slammed the door shut in their face in the 2nd half not allowing the Elephant of college football's best ever offense to ZERO points.
I know that I don't have to tell everybody how good a Brent Venables coached defense actually is, most knowledgeable college FB fans already know that for 10 years Clemson didn't lose any games BC of BV's defense, or bc the plays were sometimes late getting into his players.
I miss him, and I'm still pissed that he isn't with our Tiger FB team anymore, and he probably won't ever be on our side lines again as our DC!!!

It will be amazing for Clemson IMO, more so than it will be for Bama">

I could only give you one thumbs up for this. Spot on analysis!!! These morons thinking Goodwin is ok really leave me at a loss for words. I am too verbose and never have this problem! Just read any post I make and you’ll understand. BV was the best to EVER coach a defense in the HISTORY of college football. His stats lived in the top 5. Goodwin managed top 50. Best is the standard my ###. Muschamp is a better DC any day if the week. And I hate that guy.

The rush defense was 13th in the country. The pass defense was 76th. The overall defensive ranking was 28th in the country, IN SPITE OF a secondary who let us down in a few games.
The secondary was wrecked by injuries and youth, combined with a sophomore slump by Makuba.
Fix the secondary, maintain the rush defense, and then the defense is top 10 again.
Look, BV is a fantastic coach. He's a stickler for execution and obviously bleeds intensity. But make no mistake, Goodwin has been the brains behind the braun. Don't know if Wes will ever become the intense coach BV is, but again, Wes is the architect of a great system and even has respect in the NFL.
Fix the secondary, and the defense will be just fine.

If defensive coordinator was an idiot / poor at personnel management and alignment calls, then the HS prospects, families, mentors, and coaches would know this. Said HS prospect would therefore sign elsewhere because numerous other high quality programs remain available to them.
Ditto with offensive coordinator, with play calling being the difference vs the defensive coordinator’s alignment schemes.
With Clemson … despite the views of TNet’s hoard of armchair idiot coach bashes … we signed a bunch of high level recruits.
Our recruiting success speaks for itself with respect to the competency of our coordinators.

in the years prior to the 2016 and 2018 national championships.
The "decline" of Clemson, where we've slid all the way down to the 4th winnigest program in the last 3 seasons, has been grossly overexagerated, even by many fans.
The "slide" has primarily one thing.. the QB. When you boil away the fat and gnashing of teeth, EVERYTHING looks different with a QB who can move the ball and provide explosive plays, with the other biggest portion being s secondary who gave up way too many big plays.
The end.

the lack of capability at the most important position on the field. Period.
I'm just not sure how anyone who saw the progress immediately following the QB change can still be clinging to an idea the OC wasn't calling plays correctly. Did you or did you not see the MASSIVE improvement when we began to fix that issue??

Poor Caden Story. Gets no love and tnet was lit up whether or not he'd commit to us. He was a game changer and now doesn't even make the press. Oh, and Covil and Pride need to start. They're better imo.

I am among the those that overlook Caden Story.
I am embarrassed to admit this. Very happy that C.Story will be ready to make a fine contribution to our DL in 2023.
Thank you for the reminder!

Absolutely, a more attacking, aggressive Defense! We have the players and backups to attack from start to finish in games! If the offense can put enough points on the board, the backups can get plenty of game experience. That was a key in our championship seasons. Get lots of experience for our young players.
Go Tigers, have a Great 2023!

For an attacking defense to work, it is vital to have an entire backfield that really knows the defensive calls and alignments very well.
The DBs also need to be excellent in coverage and sure, solid tacklers.
For early part of 2023, I hope that we play a less aggressive / limited blitzing defense until such time that we fully understand our defensive backfield’s knowledge and capabilities.

Go a defense to be and look great, it certainly helps to have some degree of competence on the Offense side of the ball. We haven’t had that for the last few years. I’m hoping that gets fixed this year, and then we find out just how good Wes really is. I think we’ll be just fine. We all find out in Sept. Go Tigers!!!

I’ve seen a lot of criticism here of this guy, but Clemson’s defense in Venables first season was 64th in the country. Give Goodwin at least that much and his calls got in on time. Venables was always late and Skalski was plenty frustrated

but you can't compare what BV inherited to the wealth of talent Goodwin had this past season. This should have been a Top 10 defense but he gets a break based on us having an offense that couldn't do his job. Goodwin is solid.

Calls for in on time. However, his calls gave up more explosive plays than Kevin Steel. SMH. Goodwin backed a to 5 caliber defense into top 50 in a lot of metrics. Goodwin has a lot to prove. Bring a first time DC is like handing Lambo keys to a 16 year old kid with a learners permit. Not too smart.

BV had a wealth of talent at defensive backfield last season.
Goodwin had no such superior DB unit.
DB play is why our defense took a big step back from BV’s final year with us.

I am counting on W.Goodwin making faster in-game adjustments in 2023 vs 2021.
This aspect alone is area in which the typical largest level of improvement happens between year 1 and year 2.

Almost every OC is sitting in the booth or has someone sitting in the booth looking down at what def were in. I read complaints that BV didn’t get the calls in on time so are you saying WG gets them in too early? As far as adjusting after they initially line up I’ve watched them adjust hundreds of times. I can’t believe you hadn’t noticed. You’re right, I don’t know what you do other than complain about our coaches as if you could do a better job. If you are a coach did Dabo not hire you or why do you have so much time on you hands to critique our coaches?

Great core group returning. We should have a very solid team this year and one that should definitely challenge for another conference championship. As for CFP caliber team….we’ll see…I’m not as confident there but we’ve had to live through two years of “adequate” QB play, so like most people, I’m a little skeptical.

To find fault with the Tiger team .... players or coaches. As I have said on numerous occasions, the spring season is a very valuable time at Clemson.. That is where the next season begins and Clemson is blessed with great coaches and great players. The Tigers aren’t going anywhere but UP. Support this team every way that you can,

No mention of Mickens or Story is a bit surprising. I thought Mickens played really well last year and would get some more time this season, and Story appeared to be an early-impact guy to challenge the starters.

At what point do we maybe pump the brakes on incoming 5* DL since we haven’t had a 5* DL become an instant impact elite CFB player since Dexter Lawrence? I feel like it’s Groundhog Day where we end up disappointed with underwhelming seasons by blue chip DL only to start early January off with repeating the same predictions for the following year

Our defense took its largest step back since Kevin Steel was coordinator. Our defense was pedestrian at best! Which is hard to do with the quality of players Weslicheck had at his disposal. Our defense went from perennial top 5 in EVERY category to top 50. Anyone believing WG belongs holding the keys if this Ferrari defense doesn’t understand football.
The OC choice panned out slightly better. Which still was worse than ANY Jeff Scott led offense. Hiring from within has taken us from elite to good. We aren’t elite anymore. We haven’t been to the playoff in two years. The last time we were, we got boat races by an okay Ohio State.
If you’re happy with the state of Clemson football, something is wrong with you. All you cheerleaders really make me shake my head. Goodwin backed a top 5 defense into mediocrity. Period. Google the stats. Please.

I like Wes Goodwin, he now has more experience at play calling, I'm sure he will work his players and get them up to speed. I know watching films and critiquing your performances is hard for a players especially when he sees what he could have done better. That is the reason I like Xavier because he said when he watched himself he learned what he needed to improve on. Hope all our players have that kind of mentality. I believe our defense will be even better this year. They will want to show scouts and others they are not just guys who are not willing to take it to another team. Let's go TIGER D< learn and be the best in the nation and the ACC. Love you guys. GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!! Tiger D, we need you guys to train our next group of defensive players on how it's done. Go show them by your production. Love you guys!!!!
