Notre Dame and the transfer portal

There is more to the transfer portal than just a few plays, but the Notre Dame box score is very revealing. Their points and production came from players they obtained with one year NIL deals.

The quarterback, Riley Leonard arrived from Duke with a transfer portal NIL deal.

Jayden Harrison, who ran back the kickoff for a touchdown arrive from Marshall in a transfer Portal NIL deal.

Beau Collins, who caught the touchdown pass from Riley. Leonard arrived in a transfer portal NIL deal from Clemson.

I have a client & friend who's a huge ND fan and really likes Dabo and our Tigers. We always text during the games.

I don't want to say what happened last night was a "one off", but several key plays such as the Harrison run back for a tuddy and the Oben (who transferred from Duke with Riley) sack that caused the fumble. He even called "one offs" and that they had been mainly disappointing most of the year.

Look at Rileys #s last night and Beauxs#s all year. Beaux is very similar production as Clemson and Riley is one hit away from being out of the game bc he's basically a poor man's Tim Tebow.

ND got lucky last night and that's just that...their biggest win since 1994!!

But thats the thing. ND is a good football team and didn’t need those players to be superstars. They needed them to be complimentary players and depth. Every portal player doesn’t have to be Joe Burrow but if you make a few plays a year to help the team you are worth it.

Collins has similar numbers sure but they brought in a solid player to just make a handful of plays and it paid off.

The catch that Collins made for a touchdown was a tough catch with a good defensive back all over him and the defensive back with a hand on the ball. Collins used strong hands and caught the ball for a touchdown. We watched him at Clemson for multiple years and that would be a 50-50 chance that he makes that catch at best in his years of Clemson.

Clemson developed him and Notre Dame got just the play it needed from him at the right time

Get real, Collins had better numbers at Clemson then at ND. Our Freshman had better numbers than Collins. He caught a TD pass whooptie doo!!, isn't that his job? My goodness you people will make up more crap to boost your portal dreams. In reality, I think all of us are glad Dabo is now using the portal to fill holes. That is the way it needs to be used at Clemson. Unlike Cootville, and most other Universities, we actually have a culture to maintain. Heaven forbid, we even graduate our players.

College football is about players and accumulation of talent with enough coaching to make it work.

Last year Clemson saw a defensive back transfer out to Texas, where he was a solid member of a team now in the final four.

Last year Clemson saw a wide receiver transfer out to Notre Dame, where he became a solid member of a team now in the final four.

No one equivalent transferred in. Each would have been a solid member of our wide receiver and defensive back rotation, respectively. The talented freshmen would still have gotten their snaps.

It wasn’t long ago that Clemson boat raced Ohio State 31 to nothing with overwhelming talent differential. Only a few years later, Ohio State had tipped the talent scale in part due to a transfer a quarterback, Justin Fields, and a transfer running back Trey Sermon.

And...every team that won a playoff game DID use the portal, so there's that.

And it’s even for similar reasons. But I won’t try to explain that one to you.

Also- there are over 100 teams who took transfer players and did not even make it to the playoff. But Clemson did make it.

who is going to transfer to one of the service academies as a Sophomore or Junior and then have to go through a "plebe year"? Likely no one.

What the service academies can't do is use NIL. Federal law prohibits service academy athletes from endorsing companies/products or participating in such deals because of their status as military members.
It's similar to someone who holds a public office which "theoretically" is not supposed to be used for personal financial gain (unless, of course you're Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosi).

Canard. The portal is just a listing services for students athletes who are looking to transfer schools.

Service academies CAN accept transfer students so your statement is incorrect. But they must stay there for all 4 years. Now are players going to transfer there? Probably not but to state they cannot is just FALSE.

From the Naval Academy website
Do you accept transfer students?
Yes and no. We do accept students from other colleges as long as they meet our age requirements, but they still have to attend the Academy for four years.

From the Airforce
If you are currently in college and still meet the age eligibility requirements for admission to the United States Air Force Academy, you may still apply.

From the Army
Do you accept transfer students?
No. Students in college or with previous college credit may apply to West Point if they meet the basic requirements. However, those students still enter West Point as plebes (freshmen) and must complete the four-year program.

Would anyone ever be happy with Leonard over Cade? 90 yards passing ?
The win was due to the offensive line and defensive in total. (Mostly - the defense). They put pressure on QB, slowed the run and had mostly good pass defense.

ND’s offensive line got whipped until late Q4 when the time of possession advantage for ND led to UGA’s DL getting pooped.

The three differences in the game:

Most important was that UGA’s left tackle (especially) and left guard were utterly abused last night. That abuse was highlighted by ND’s strip sack of UGA QB Gunner Stockton’s fumble deep in UGA territory followed one play later by Beuax Collin’s ~12 yard TD catch. Whoop-te-do … that was ND’s ONLY TD ‘scoring drive’ of the game.

ND had a KOR for a TD.

Riley Leonard was a tough runner, reasonable quick, reasonably fast, outstanding recognition of when & where to run, and he didn’t fumble. R.Leonard’s running led to numerous third down conversions; maybe ~ half of them were 4+ yards. Those third down conversions extended ND’s plodding-down-the-field drives, including those three which resulted in all three of ND’s long field goals.

Yea they filled a few gaps and got some depth, they also lost alot of players to the portal.

One thing that continues to escape people is Dabo is not going to just cut a guy to make room for a portal player, Clemson is usually right at the scholarship limit. I like how he handled it this year and barring any surprise transfers in the spring he might grab 1 or 2 more guys then. Since he can't have walkons anymore it will be portal players that fill the surprise openings in the spring going forward, so portal fans will now get part of their wish. Although I think many of the die hard portal fans are dumb and don't realize you should not just start cutting guys to make room, that is not how you build a sustainable culture.

He got 2 portal players, and maybe 1 of them will start. There is no portal open when the rosters go to 105 in July.

If Dabo uses the portal to fill the additional roster doors, it's going to be after the 2025 regular season.

And...when the 105 roster limit hits, Dabo will be forced to cut some of the wall ons that currently out us over that limit.

There were 3000 players in the Portal last time I looked. There will be more going in during the April window. Dabo will be able to get Portal players if he wants as there will be plenty. They may not be 5* guys, but they would be backups as needed for scout teams or whatever. You can pull a portal player as long as they can get registered for classes before a summer session or semester starts. This is where schools on the quarterly system have an advantage for registering players since they have more window to register.

You and the other portal fanatics just won’t pull your heads out of the sand and see what is obvious to Clemson’s more attentive fans.

We don’t have the money to compete with the rich schools for expenditure in both acquiring starter quality portal players PLUS paying competitive enough NIL deals to retain our existing stars PLUS paying big NIL money for top HS recruit signees.

Hint: Cade Klubnik, Peter Woods, TJ Parker, Bryant Wesco, and TJ Moore are not our only stars. There are many more players on our roster that are getting bigger NIL contracts.

Clemson isn’t the federal government, for which the budgeting process is for a department to simply ask for a lot more money each year and settle for only getting not-quite-as-much-money what they wanted. Clemson cannot print money. Boosters have to first earn that money; Clemson has nowhere near the number of truly big time wealthy boosters as the big money schools. They want the same star players that ever other school wants. They can pay big bucks to both retain their stars AND pay big NIL for portal players.

It's a matter of having everything else already in place and still finding the right guys in the portal to fill those few holes. They obviously hit homeruns with the QB and WR. You usually see it come to fruition at the season goes on, thats why they struggled early on offense and lost to N ILL, took time for the new key pieces on offense to gel.

ND’s acquisition if Beaux Collins was not a big time portal transfer. His stats proved that. He was good enough to make one critical catch at one critical time. That’s what he did at Clemson in occassions. That is what any decent WR for any P-4 college FB team would expect.
