Clemson's tuition has gone up significantly since I was there in the mid-late 80's. What is the increase attributable to? Less funding from the state? Higher salaries for professors? Those nice new buildings??

allowed state to cut funding. It gave scholarships to the best and brightest students which kept them in state. This increased demand at the states best colleges allowing them to greatly increase tuition.

some financial planners suggest the parents pay 1/3 , the student pay 1/3 thru working , work study , etc and 1/3 paid via student loans . That way , student has skin ( ie risk ) in the game .

Send her to Sikes Hall and tell her to get her pen hand ready for some loans like the rest of us. I have been out of school since 06 and I am just now getting to the point of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Seems like this is just part of the college process these days.

know clemson does not have a team. She has camped at a few schools and they seem to think she has a chance to play college ball

If you are a SC resident, your daughter isn't getting into Clemson without either a lottery scholarship or athletic scholarship.
Take a minimum of $5k off the tuition figure and tell her that if she drops below a 3.0 at the end of each year - the $5k is on her.

I'm a parent with two in college for the last 4 years.
You can turn down the lottery scholarship if you don't want it, I think.

Both my daughters are going to Furman but they give a ton of scholarship money. Few pay the printed rate of $50K per year.

It's easy: Get the lottery scholarship, ensure she knows the value of keeping a 3.0 or better, and belly up to the bar at Sikes and write the check each semester. We did it for our daughter ('11 Grad). You'll find a way to cover the checks. It's really not that bad on you paying for a semester at a time.

You can end up getting up to 10 grand for palmetto fellows if you do a math/science/engineering/health major. If she is an english/writing type girl make sure she prepares like #### for the math section. If she is a math girl better make her prepare for english/writing. Only works for 4 years though. Those of us getting ready for year 5 are about to bite the proverbial bullet.

You also must be top 6% in hs class to get Palmetto Fellow. If so, you can get more than $10,00 per year because the school kicks in $2500. Clemson does not give much $ beyond that, even to very highly ranked students. It is still the best bargain for a great education!

and you're right, it has gotten rediculous. The full cost (tuition, room, meal plan, and books) is now in the $23,000 per year range.
My advise is to start searching for scholarships and apply for literally everything you can. Of course, many are need based but there are a bunch of merit based scholarships available too.
It is a time consuming endeavor but well worth the effort. Your daughter's school guidence counselors should be able to provide you with some assistance in this area as well.
If you area SC resident, you will also have the benefit of the SC Education Lottery which helps.
My second recommendation is to start drinking heavily.

My 3rd, and last, child graduates in May. They all finished without loans. Here's my advice:
1. Start saving early. First grade is not too soon.
2. Make sure your kids know the value of great grades in HS.
3. Make sure your kids get the best possible SAT scores. (Prep classes and tutoring work.)
4. Make sure your kids work to earn and save college money in high school and every summer during college.
5. Apply for every schollie you can imagine. Even the $1000 kind help.
6. When they get to school, write the check.
Two of mine, the girls, got very nice scholarships. Following the same plan, my son did not. He claimed he was a walk on.

Talked to a 20 y/o recently that was complaing that he couldn't go to college b/c his parents couldn't afford it...I asked him why he didn't pay for it, if college is so important, and he looked at me like I was an alien.
