Front Page Story: Are the orange pants back for big games?

Jan 5, 2014, 4:02 PM

Are the orange pants back for big games?

The Clemson football team walked into the locker room after pre-game warm-ups Friday night at Sun Life Stadium, and found a surprise hanging in their lockers: orange pants. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told the team to "put on them britches" and go beat the Buckeyes. Could the orange pants be back for big games? Full Story »

Teams searching for an identity worry about uniform colors

Jan 5, 2014, 4:10 PM

We haven't needed that in a long time.

When they were first used, the reason the orange pants seemed to be an effective talisman was because some terrific players were wearing them and some great coaches were on the sidelines.

Uniforms themselves never win game and honestly, any color combination looks great after a win ... after a loss, they all stink.

Agree completely! Even Dabo says uniforms are a distraction

Jan 5, 2014, 4:29 PM

I certainly don't have anything against the orange britches though, especially with the orange jersey. I do prefer all white as the road uniform though.

Purple, now that's another story. Thought it was fine for military appreciation day and the purple hearts against El Cid, but I personally prefer it to be retired otherwise.

But if for a big game there is something to give an extra boost.then use it. Anything to focus these kids heads.

I don't think they "win" games or anything like that, but...

Jan 5, 2014, 6:32 PM

They can be used as motivation sometimes, same with purple.

I don't think it's a distraction either, not when the coach chooses. When it's up to the players, then yeah, I think it's a distraction.

I think one, max two games a year with orange britches is cool.

For purple, new tradition...every Military Appreciation Day, the team wears purple jerseys. Pant color can be optional. Switch between white and purple pants, and only use orange for the "big" games. Big in quotes, because every game is "big" to me.

wish Hood would stop obsessing on the coots

Jan 5, 2014, 5:25 PM

Yes, we need to beat them. NO, they are not more important than the other big games.

Have to say when I saw the orange pants I knew we were going

Jan 5, 2014, 5:33 PM

to play well and the rest was history! Well done to our head coach, the spark we needed!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

maybe the pants work!

Jan 5, 2014, 8:08 PM

If it makes our boys play like their hair is on fire then I don't care if Dabo makes them wear plaid britches! A win is a win baby!!

Pants were undefeated at one time

Jan 5, 2014, 9:09 PM

I graduated in '87. We had a long (can't recall exactly but I think it was 12-0) winning streak in the orange pants. Article should have cited that stat. It is a big crowd motivator and if it works for the team too then why not?
