Staff changes/Wed night update

I didn't plan on doing an update this late, but I felt all the rumors floating around demanded it. Like I said on the podcast yesterday, I understand that Wes Goodwin has moved on. From reports in Oklahoma, it sounds like he is in line for a job with Brent. But nothing official there.

Now, the other stuff. I see where people are posting about Mickey Conn and possibly Mike Reed moving on or changing joba, about Joey Batson retiring, and CJ Spiller moving into an off-the-field role. Has that happened? I do believe a lot of things are on the table. Again, nothing has happened. I can't say that enough. Perhaps there are coaches still coaching elsewhere? Yes, today was New Year's, but we still have Duke and Ole Miss in the Gator Bowl.

It's still just Jan. 1, and as I posted earlier this week, Swinney has been focused on roster retention (and on that note, they are working on getting something done for Blake Miller, and I believe that is close to happening). Patience is the key here, and trust me when I say there are a lot of things in the works that have to play out. Rumors abound and everyone has the inside word, etc. But we still have to let this happen.

I've been beating this horse since LSU dominated both LoS in 2019.

Injuries, guys gassing, guys getting pushed around, most guys leaving slower than when they arrived, that's all S&C.

You can look at the differences when UGA and Clemson touched the field the players looked different.

Reed wants the DC job. He isn't getting it. There is some hurt feelings there I'm sure. I don't think Dabo wants him to go, but it may be a price tbat has to be paid for a change in tbe defense. My fear is tbat we lose some DB's if Reed is gone.

I'm a Clemson fan. They are way over and above my favorite team other than FSU. And, this board is helping me widen the gap between Clemson and everybody else. I appreciate y'all engaging in such good conversation with me.

I spend a lot more time talking football on this board than I do an the two FSU boards I post on.

I've even thought about changing my handle to something non-descript about FSU on this board, but I want to be as honest as possible. FSU is #1. Clemson is #2 (closer to being #1A, actually). And, I really don't have a #3, but whoever that would be the distance between 2 and 3 is massive.

I would support all these moves if they all happen. Goodwin is already gone, Conn no loss, Spiller no opinion either way but not much of a loss. The strength coach Batson is a nice guy but clemson has had way too many injuries and not really impressive on the field with push anymore....been calling for that one 4 years.

Reed seems to be the only one people want to hold onto, while i do think he's good, he's been here awhile, the days of guys hangin around ten years like smart at bama and venables are gone, he interviewed at BC recently anyway seems his mind is lookin for bigger things, id be fine if he leaves.

It’s not the PI calls that bug me. In fact, getting a PI call after our DB gets beat is much better than giving up a TD.

You’re referring to Aveion Terrell, I sssume. (I’m calling him by name because I’m going to defend him.)

Going into this past season, he was clearly our best CB. No contest. As it became apparent that our run defense overall was a catastrophe against opponents with a pulse, we emphasized using the safeties more in hopes of improving the run defense. This led to more defensive alignments with A.Terrell being left way out there by himself against the opponent’s best WR. The drop off after Terrell was big enough that we couldn’t give Terrell as many plays off as we would have done in better circumstances.

Thus, Terrell could not afford to make a single mistake such as getting a shred off-balance if the opposing WR made an effective move, or if in press coverage Terrell lost the ‘hands’ battle and the opposing WR broke free. Terrell could not rely on safety help to save him in many cases. Therefore, if Terrell knew he had gotten beat he either had to commit PI or rely upon hope that the opposing QB + WR would not make the connection, or that the WR dropped the ball.

Indeed, getting beat isn’t a good thing. Recognizing the circumstance in when to commit PI is a better than the worst thing. Mike Reed gets credit of excellent coaching for how to ‘do the next best thing if the best thing didn’t work out.’

Noticed that too, seemed out of place.. Duke’s DC Patke would be an incredible hire, but he’s worked with Manny Diaz for a long time, don’t know if I see them splitting up. Pete Golding at Ole Miss is meh.. Alabama’s defense was not good under Golding a few years back. Could be somebody else on the either staff, not sure. Tennessee’s Tim Banks has been floated on other threads, he personally has my vote.

Is Dabo working in getting rid of Grisham?? He isn’t the best at coaching the WRs on how to get out of jams?

Maybe I'm wrong but Jeff Scott is better

Thanks DHood....

Joey Batson has defied strength and conditioning coaches in college football. He replaced Gary Wade when Tommy West came in in 1993-1994. Gary Wade continued to stay on at Clemson in a facilities role. I knew both Gary Wade and Joey Batson during my time at Clemson and they are both great men.

I know Batson has taken heat on the boards over the last few years with questioning our toughness and conditioning, especially with the O line.

But what is unheard of is how long Batson has been at Clemson. Through 3 head coaches (West, Bowden and Dabo). To be able to adjust from Tommy West to Tommy Bowden is night and day.

Under West, the conditioning test used on the first day of fall camp was 18 x 100 meter sprints with 30 second rest in between each set and the time standards were different for OL/DL, RBs/LBs, and WR/DBs. When Bowden came in, the test turned to a one mile followed by 300 yard shuttle runs. Our O line in 1999 did not have an OL over 300 pounds, we never huddled once that year (except in the victory formation when we were kneeling on the ball).

Larry Greenlee is his assistant and oddly enough, he was on the staff when Batson originally got the job as a GA. Both Batson and Greenlee have sons who were on the team and graduated from Clemson.

There will be a time when Batson moves on/retires, but he is a God in the strength and conditioning community, is a great Clemson man, and has done an excellent job for our university and football program.

As long as Wes Goodwin is gone, and we get someone in here that actually played the game at a high level and coached the game at a high level thats a net gain.

I cannot believe anyone in their right mind thought hiring a miss st. baseball analyst to be our DC was a good idea.

You have to have experience in this world.

I don’t think it would be that hard. He wants to be a head coach. I think being a coordinator will get you there faster than a DB coach. He only left Wisconsin when they fired the coach and he didn’t get the job.

The good news to me is that Wes Goodwin is on the way out. Clemson has a decent chance at the playoffs next year with all the returning talent on offense for 2025, and a solid DC certainly enhances their chances. I'm hoping Dabo makes a solid decision here. His future at Clemson depends on it.

Agreed. And I will do you one more. Are we ever going to have a fan day again. Covid killed it and haven't heard an answer to that question in the half dozen times I posted it. Maybe this time I will get an answer, or at the least an acknowledgment someone read it.. if it is a money thing, charge an entry fee and fund a little NIL with the proceeds!

I know things (the college football landscape has changed) so I understand it wouldn’t be free but can we not work something out. Like it wouldn’t have be mandatory but players could be (if they chose to be) at the stadium and its so much to get in with the proceeds split between them or heck even have someone at each line charging for a specific player.

Whatever needs to be done I would absolutely love if we could get it back!

@DavidHood, I noticed you pulled your original post from Wednesday night and re-posted Thursday. Did you get called out for the "volatile meeting" comment that you deleted from the original post? I couldn't believe you disrespected the coaching staff like that when I read it. You don't repeat something like that, especially if you weren't in the room. I'm sure you embarrassed Dabo and the defensive staff. I know you embarrassed yourself...

Ha, Hood embarrassed the staff… are you serious?

The defensive staff embarrassed themselves with what was put on the field. I don’t remember anyone specifically being called out in the article, so I don’t see any harm in it. But I do think you’re right in that someone must’ve said something for it to get pulled.

I've been in volatile meetings when performance wasn't up to snuff and that's for a bunch of people making pennies on the dollar compared to what our defensive coaches earn. If they're too delicate for volatile meetings and having their results scrutinized they are in the wrong profession.
