Anybuddy used one of these smaller stump grinders before?

Cold snap took out about 10 Leyland Cypress trees along my fence line and I’m going to put in some new plants but need to get these old stumps gone. They’re not huge, 6-8” in diameter.

Can rent one of these for about $150 for the day. On paper it seems like an easy project but I’m trying to figure out if that’s the reality or if I’ll be all “FML” before the second one is finished.

But I've thought these sound too good to be true. There's youtubes videos out there, it's not expensive, seems easy, right?

Well yesterday I was putting a plug in my tire and I pulled the tool out and hit my arm on the exhaust and drew blood.

Not too bad. So, I have a screw in ANOTHER tire. When I pull the tool out of this tire, I accidentally jam it into my other hand extracting a slightly more significant amount of blood.

SO anyways, you would probably have more success than I and I would definitely have a DIY attempt since a quote could be $800.

The latest insta reels are guys putting an inflated wheel/tire under the line to increase leverage. Seems like nothing could go wrong with that.

yard after Hugo. He owned a big gun store in Charlotte and tended to excess.
He invited over a bunch of people to a party to watch the dynamite.
They pack the stump with explosives and get ready. Everyone was squeezed on or near the porch. The stump was about 50 yards from the front door.

When it blew, it was immediately obvious that they were not quite far enough for comfort and everybody scattered, mostly before dirt and wood chunks started raining down on the house. Still had to dig out the remains.

You could rent a mini excavator for $400 and it would potentially take more time, but it would be more fun.

See if you can rent a larger one with the joy stick controls, so much easier

Not sure how Leyland Cypress stumps compare to pine, but trying to grind a pine stump (unless it's been sitting for a few years) with anything less than one of the $50,000 pro machines sucks. I used one of the grinders pictured above, and the grinding wheel will just skip along the pine stump. Oak and the other hardwoods grind down quick and easy...

I've used one of those exact grinders before and also I've very recently dug up

and pulled leland cypress stumps that were part or all the way blown over in a storm. So those stumps are pretty hard and they rot slowly. I dug and pulled out 8 that were about the size you are describing or bigger, and another three that had been cut 2-3 years prior.. I used mattic and a come-a-long and a big old digging bar. It's tough work but possible, esp if you can get the come-a-long or winch to get a good pull angle so you are just working with a few roots.

These grinders will work but it's a pretty small and light cutting blade. So it's tedious and loud.
I'd bet it will take you a few hours to do one of those stumps using that grinder. Probably not faster than pulling and digging. Plus when you grind you will leave a lot behind so if you are going to replant there you will end up digging them out anyway.

Leyland cypresses don't have taproots. Taint no stump to grind. Sawce: I lost like 7 or 8 of them during Matthew in 2016.
