The nearest hot spot is 19 miles from my house. I guess it could be worse, considering I'm in a major metro area. Thoughts and prayers to the Gulf Coast.

I covered environmental issues in a big industrial town for a long time. It's not 1950 anymore. These sites are so flippin' monitored and regulated it's hard to fathom.

Are industrial sites a nuisance? Sure. Don't buy a home near one. Are they loud? Yep. Move away. Do they kick up a lot of dust and throw a lot of tiny particulates into the air that make it hard for some people to breathe sometimes? Sure.

Do they cause cancer? Not even close. And there's no empirical data to suggest they do.

And these so-called investigative journalists know it, too.

Which is why they bury this journalistic mea culpa a few grafs down:

"Our map should not be used to try to establish with any certainty that an individual case of cancer was the result of toxic releases from specific industrial facilities. Rather, it provides a starting point for readers to learn more about the potential sources of industrial cancer risk near them."

And hope no one reads that far.

Oh, and one more thing: "toxic releases" is an actionable term that suggests environmental crimes are being committed on a daily/hourly basis. It is irresponsible for them to use such language.

It's why the environmental officers at these facilities who are responsible for meeting/exceeding local/state/federal emissions standards *hate* journalists.
