Giganews and usenet was how it was collected. And I don't even listen to it, my Zeus hasn't been turned on in at least a year now.

Coupled with one of the first cable modems, and I could download as many songs as I could think of, and then come more. I only have 23,000 though and of course I buy all my songs now.

^^ this is how I got many of my albums (Columbia and RCA)

if you were attentive and played the game right, you could get 15 albums for about $30-40. The lazy suckers were the ones they made big bucks off of by sending them unwanted 'Album of the Month" selections and charging them $20 or so (if you didn't return their little "order form" marked correctly within 7 days), and it was almost not worthwhile to try to return the thing there were so many hoops to jump through. So you got the 12 for a penny deal, bought your required 3-4 albums the first month or two, and resigned from the club. Then join the other one - rinse and repeat.
They also used to have these things called "record stores" in every town (even the tiny ones) that you could actually go in, browse large selections, and purchase hard copies of music. I used to to buy an album per month almost religiously. Plus, artists put out at least one record per year, the popular ones did anyways, so there was ALWAYS something new and fresh out there. Now, bands go 4-5 year between releases.
Some of the classic albums I have bought 4 times - LP, 8-track, cassette, and CD. I know I did for Back in Black and Highway to Hell for sure. A bunch more - ugh, I hate thinking about it.

And then, when folks were dumping vinyl to switch to CDs, Salvation Army, Goodwill, and yard sales allowed my to pick up great stuff sometimes for pennies apiece. Not to mention the friends and friends-of-friends that gave their collections to me because wives wanted the room that they took up. I'm at the point now that if someone does dump their collection on me, I cherry pick the good stuff and then run the rest down the road to Goodwill. I had to build a room onto the house for my collection, and now IT'S too small.

at an auction long ago, my daddy bought 1000 LPs

--- one of those ACTUAL auctions with the fast-talking country dude belting it out --- for like $25. Never knew for sure, but I guess it was a store gone out of business. Me and my brother were in scavenger heaven.
Well, it took a month or so to ruffle through them all. We put every one of them on the turntable (played at least a tiny part of each). We salvaged about maybe 100 good ones out of it. God, there was some horrific music included in this cache, and many repeat copies of horrific music. But it was easily $25 worth of entertainment for a couple 14/16 year old boys.
Used the other 900 for rifle/shotgun practice in the cornfield. LPs make fun targets.
