The stadium is near the airport and there is a nice Crowne Plaza that I've stayed in very close by.
Crowne Plaza Louisville Airport Expo Ctr
3-Star hotel
Located off I-264, this hotel is also 1.4 miles from Louisville International Airport and 2.3 miles from Churchill Downs. Churchill Downs is across the street from Papa Johns Stadium.
Address: 830 Phillips Ln, Louisville, KY 40209

so no need for a hotel, just a safe parking spot to start tailgating at 4am. If you're parking near the stadium, keep your head on a swivel.

but I have been to the stadium once while attending the Kentucky Derby a few years ago. You certainly wouldn't want to be there alone after dark but it's not as bad as Wlliams Brice IMO.

To be fair, you were there for the Derby which is a

good bit safer than most other times. If you step off Churchill Downs on a normal race day and are in that area at night, it is no bueno.

They sell lots of bourbons there too
Try to get tickets in a nice box. You're perfectly fine there, I'm just talking about the areas around there and on the outer edges of the campus.

Columbia feels a lot safer. I highly recommend 4th street on any night of the week, although it's a younger crowd.

My liver always goes into panic mode when it feels me getting close to the Ville. Not to mention the surrounding bourbon trail.

4th Street is fine

it's super touristy, but since you'll be a tourist you'll fit right in.
Germantown and the Cherokee Triangle area are my favorites, good mix of national chains, local pubs, and dives.
If you want some Pappy Van Winkle 23 year old, the only place that has any left is Haymarket whiskey bar.
If you do go to 4th Street hit up the Sports and Social Club for some drunk bowling, or if you're old school the bar in the old Hilton is a blast from the past.
The Legal Bar and Doc Crow's are right by the 2nd street bridge, both have a good selection of Bourbon, and good food.

folks" like me. I was there last week and out of 10 places we went during the week, the only place with any available was Haymarket.
Everyone will get their allotments again in October though. Most establishments are only allowed 2 to 6 bottles per year, based on volume. I'm sure Churchill Downs gets an extra case or two.
Supplies get pretty low late into the summer. After 23 years a 55 gal barrel yields only around 5 gallons of delicious whiskey, and they only release about 7,000 cases per year.

If you don't already have a hotel reserved....

be prepared to pay upwards of $250 per night for just about anything in an around Louisville. The local Louisville hotels all know there is a Thursday night home game and they're taking full advantage of it as reflected by the room rates. You may want to consider looking in Corydon, Indiana which is only about a 15 minute drive west of Louisville on Interstate 64.

I've taken fuel barges into a Marathon Fuel depot there on the river . City is pretty from the river at night . Never got into the hill, so afraid I cant help there . However , Muhammad Ali is a native of Louisville ...so at least I shared some trivia while not helping at all .
