Lots of opportunities in basketball

Lost because we played the wrong players in crunch time. Don’t expect an explanation for it, but at least I know it’s not something to overreact about. Close finish. Fouling killed us mostly. If half of the calls were even valid.
Early season game, Brad usually guides his teams to at least an 8-2 record by game 10 of the season. Lots of opportunities ahead that can basically erase this loss to Georgetown.
Just play Ace Buckner. Leading scorer averaging 13 PPG not even playing in the last 3 minutes of the game. Beats the absolute he** out of me.

He was worried about being sloppy with the ball. It didn't matter though. We were still sloppy.

He was important last year when we also Chase and Ian, but I don’t think Dillon is capable of being the leader we need. His shot is too inconsistent. He’s athletic and plays great defense, but I’d rather put a younger guy out there and let him learn.
Dillon is who he is at this point, but the younger guys can improve greatly if they get some of his minutes.

Dillon actually played decent in 2nd half. Some fans giving up on him way too early. I'd play Zac and Dillon together. Let Ace come of the bench with Porter. Like the guard depth to go with hot hand.

WE DEFINATELY NEED MORE SCORING FROM DILLON BUT HE HAS PLAYED 3 GAMES AND HAD 2 TURNOVERS AND PLAYED GOOD D. HOPEFULLY THE SCORING WILL PICK UP. 10 A GAME WOULD WORK JUST FINE.

I see your point, but let the early season lineups get some time for the cream to rise. I see Welling eventually getting more minutes from Godfrey. The guards need some time. Hopefully a few more games and Foster will start to click more consistently. Buckner is already showing me way more than I had expected.

Correct, Judge! Dillon is average, at best, plays decent defense, but is never going to be a consistent scorer, passer or floor general. He needs to sit and cheer for the guys who have the ability to do all those things.

This is similar to how Dabo promotes and rewards seniority. I’ve been past my patience with Dillon. And it leaves me speechless to see how Brad managed his lineup the whole entire game.
The “dynamic duo” of Dillon Hunter and Jestin Porter needs to be eradicated. Because they are obviously not that. Loose with the ball, and just plain suck at getting the ball in the basket. Jestin Porter’s shots were not good at all. He’s a walking brick. Dillon can surprise you with a couple 3s, but overall he’s the same.
You deserve to lose if you withhold your actually productive players.
Sidenote, I think Clemson wins if it’s at home in Littlejohn.

Who are the productive players? Maybe the staff has an understanding of what they got for 3 or 4 players under legit game stress. The rest are building datapoints for Brownell. We’re 4 games in with maybe 1 1/2 of the games providing useful info.

Ace Buckner, Zac Foster, Nick Davidson, Carter Welling, Jake Wahlin, and even Dallas Thomas should see more minutes
Our lineup after the “under-4” timeout included Hunter and Porter.

Did brownell reward seniority when dillon hunter started over chauncey wiggins last year?
Which player was more productive yesterday?
Dillon Hunter: 3-7 FG, 2-3 3pt, 6 reb, 3 assists
ace Buckner: 2-7 FG, 0-2 3pt, 3 reb, 3 assists

@Clemsoountaineers
Hunter played 26 minutes
Buckner played 19 minutes
The lesser of the 2 point guards was chosen to play the 1 in crucial time. 7 minutes more. That’s a large amount of time in which I know Ace would’ve scored more for us

Dude..... zac Foster was picked to play over ace in thise final 4 minutes. Not sure we want 2 freshman at the guard positions late in the game. Especially in a game where we are turning the ball over and we need points quick, and Ace isnt a 3pt shooter.
You alluded in another post that dillon was a turnover machine. That just proves you are clueless.

If you are thoroughly watching this North Alabama game, you would understand what I am saying. Especially if you are debating with me to this level. You ought to be.
Dillon has literally missed a 4-foot floater, 2 layups , and rejected at the rim in the matter of the last 5 minutes alone.
If you’re watching Ace, and even the other players that I mentioned in a group with each other elsewhere in this thread. Like Foster, Welling, Dallas Thomas, and others.
And ESPECIALLY Ace Buckner.
I know that I’m right

I thought Dillon was super important to our team last year. He played great defense and was an energy giver. Losing him for the postseason last year really hurt us.
However, I think it’s clear that he probably isn’t the guy to step into a starring role to consistently give us double figure scoring and reliable outside shooting. I obviously hope I’m wrong but I don’t see him being more than a good defender and vocal leader this year.
It’s early in the season, so we will see, but AT THIS POINT I don’t feel confident in him being able to take that next step.

Hunter and Buckner both had equal opportunity to show what they had in the first 3 games. Ace Buckner outplayed him tremendously. He’s better with the ball. He knows what to do and intent. Also get this clear, I don’t actually mind Dillon as a supporting role player. He can provide great passes. He turns the ball over when at point guard.
Play Buckner more himself regardless of Dillon at the least

I’m not arguing with you. JK used Dillon as cover for our early exit last year painting him as an essential member of the team and effectively one of the starters. Now, 3 games into the season, he’s lost patience and Dillon is expendable and to blame for the loss. He’s a hypocrite that will say anything as long as it is in service of Brad Brownell.

We are coming off our best regular season in program history last year.
The year before that, we had our best NCAA Tournament run in program history.
We are in the midst of our best multi-year stretch in program history.
Recruiting is going very well, and we utilize the transfer portal extremely well.
Our players represent our school well on and off the court.
What's not to like? I'm super proud of Brad and the staff. You should be too.

Dillon has never been a great scorer. He played decent when Chase was on floor and would feed him some extra but Dillon is not a player to build a team around. I agree he has great D but if we need points, we probably need him on the bench.
Also, this is a sign of CBB's evolving strategy. We used to be top Def team in ACC or close, therefore scores were almost always 60-70s, seldom 80s even good teams, but now we are a little more offensive minded hence we actually try to rebound shots vs scrambling to opposite basket. Used to drive me crazy that we would run to opposite basket just as soon as ball was shot. It was refreshing watching Collins fight for rebounds 3yrs ago, and it seems to be newer philosophy.

I agree with everything except the Buckner point. He’s been the leading scorer because they’ve played some of the worst teams in the country (highest Kenpom rated team before Georgetown was Morehead State with a 298 out of 365). He struggled in the game offensively, only going 2/7 from the floor, and struggled to keep their guards at bay. He’s also been abysmal from 3 this year, going 1/10 and then 0/2 today, so when you need 3’s, he’s not the guy you want taking them.
The team will mesh and Georgetown is a pretty good team this year, this sky isn’t falling as some are saying. The only two players I’m completely out on are Hunter and Porter, not even the misses but just being so lazy and careless with the ball. If just three of their passes don’t happen, Clemson wins this game.

Ace Buckner is the best point guard we have. I’m confident on that, but if I were to be wrong I think it would be Zac Foster running point. I like his game.
Buckner is a finisher. He has confidence. He has intent with the ball. He knows what he wants, and he at least gives a good attempt at whatever it is.
Dillon will just dribble lackadaisically through the lanes and turn the ball over because he doesn’t know what to do with the ball. And if it’s a floater shot you can forget it. But the turnovers are continuous and it bewilders me why he plays so much.

Before this game, Dillon hadn't had a turnover in 3 games. 10 turnovers total for the game today is not why they lost.

Ace is going to be really good and valuable. We lost today largely because our guards couldn't defend their guards from going to the hoop and even make the shot or create free throws. We'll be facing elite, big guards all year. And as others have pointed out, the 3 ball. Was hoping we had picked one up that was experienced and could knock em down like Gerard. Obviously they don't grow on trees so Brad's got to identify the best two.
That's one thing I like about Brad and other coaches we have vs Dabo. At least they'll tell it like it is, and Brad has been honest saying it'll take some time to gel and figure the rotation.

BB's biggest weakness is and always has been no feel for team chemistry or keeping the hot players in when they are hot. I had to stop watching his teams years ago because of this. A player is getting in rhythm and he takes him out. Ad infinitum. Needs to study Wooden, who knew and understood who his horses were and kept them in, and never did the Chinese Fire Drill substitution thing that Brad does.

Brad is trying to develop key depth because our lack of it hurt us last year.

We were really really worn down last year when March rolled around.
Chase Hunter was exhausted.
Ian Schieffelin was playing injured and couldn’t practice.
Dillon Hunter was injured and couldn’t play.
Not being able to go deeper into our bench hurt us. Brad is banking on risking losing some games early in order to have better depth to help us win more games later.

Just keep coaching him up, he’ll hit his stride and be our most important player to get wins in the ACC.
Dillon will be as good as his brother overall by season’s end in my opinion, his potential is off the charts.
