This football season is going to be a tuff one for me...

I start the final leg of my doctorate, the dreaded dissertation year, this August.
I mean it's a happy time because I'll be finishing this 4 year adventure but at the same time, I don't want to miss a single minute of Clemson Football.
I am also teaching full time in the high school so I need to really budget my time. If any of you who have gone through this have any advice, I'd sure appreciate it.
Wish me luck and Go Tigers!

Good luck Pacific. The great thing about modern technology is you can watch the game anytime in your free time.

No doubt. I was in the Navy and missed so many games. I watched them years later on YouTube.

Seems like my whole family is ex-Navy. My brother, dad, grandfather (Chief Petty Officer USS Tambor Sub WWII), uncles, and cousins.

Retired after 22 years, when talk turns to Navy with a casual acquaintance, they always ask what rank did you retire at. When I answer E-18 I always get a 'What'. I say yep, I made E-6 3 times.

Submarine duty is the only way. I retired Senior Chief after 24 years, 18 years of that were at sea all on Submarines.

I see what you said about catching the games live, BUT
if the Clemson game is on your local cable provider and you have DVR, you can start watching the first quarter during halftime, fast forward through commercials, injuries, challenges, "upon further review" replays, etc. and you can catch live action in the fourth quarter. Just stay off social media, texting, whatever will spoil it for you. You can gain 1-1½ hours of work time by doing this.

Harsh as it sounds, I’ve got an ABD because every time I would get on line to do research I would think, hey, i should take a minute and check in on T-net. 3 hours later I would still be reading the mange instead of getting my work done.
(I was also teaching full time but didn’t have a side business like you do)
You’re probably way more disciplined than I am so I’m sure you’ll be fine
Good luck!

Finished my doctorate a few years back. Actually defended my dissertation in November of that year. Was full time teaching. Didn't miss a game. As you said, you just have to budget your time and have a very understanding family. Keep your head down. The end is in sight and it is worth it. Good luck

Hang in there PBT. Did mine last summer. Key is selecting a great committee and chair. If they are diligent, the dissertation and defense is a formality. Good luck! You’ll do great.

Fortunately dissertations follow a template which makes the writing easier. I also taught (am teaching) while doing mine. Our program was designed so we began writing dissertation in year two. So now it is research details and conclusions remaining to be written.
My main issue is when I am done I will hold my highest degree from USuC.

who was your football buddy.
I awoke one morning and felt like I'd forgotten something important. That feeling you get when you load up the car and head off to somewhere to spend a few days and feel like you forgot to do something which is going to create a life altering catastrophe. That became part of my daily existence for several months. One day I realized I had not finished my education.
I thought about it constantly, knowing that if I decided to start college that living just 10 miles from Clemson that life had narrowed my choices considerably. One morning while driving from Easley toward Seneca I decided to drop by Clemson and pickup an application. That was the summer of 84 and I intended to start classes that fall.
I was dressed in work clothes fit for rough construction and probably had a 3 day beard and well worn boots. I don't remember, maybe it was my deep southern accent and the hillbilly in me that caused the lady at the admissions office to refuse to give me an admission application. She asked if I'd taken the SAT. I told her I took the ACT back some 12 or so years ago. I was 32 at the time. Perhaps that's it.
She told me I had to prove I was able to do the work and recommended I attend Tri County or G'ville Tech first for Clemson wouldn't accept me. I applied for G'ville Tech and attended school there intending to go a year and try Clemson again. I was a work study student during the day and worked evenings and weekends at whatever I could find. After two quarters the work study job fell through so I returned to contracting with hopes that my 3.65 GPA would be enough to get me to Clemson in the fall. Oh yeah, almost forgot. I had my first heart attack, 32 yrs old and a five bypass surgery at the time.
I had 4 children when I enrolled at Clemson in 85. I worked hard during the summers as a drywall contractor and at times attended class straight from the job and returned to work as soon as class ended. During the break between fall of 87 and spring of 88 I realized with a couple sets of courses being sequential I had another full year after the spring semester. Luck of the draw.
I concocted this plan to get 24 semester hours during the Spring of 88 and with two 6-wk/9hr-sessions I could graduate late summer. Dr Book, my advisor, refused to sign the paper allowing me to attend the classes I needed to accomplish my goal. He accused me of signing up for a superload to manipulate my schedule then drop half the classes later. Up to that time at Clemson I had worked 40 hours/wk while attending class, worked summers as a drywall contractor and I'm guessing offended every Building Science professor at Lee Hall by working full time and keeping up in class.
I laid the plan out to Book. 24 hours this Summer, 2 @ 9hr summer sessions equals 42 hours which is what a Senior year in Building Science was back in the day.
He said, "YOU'LL NEVER DO IT!"
I spoke gently as any Clemson Gentlemen would, 'That's what they told the Wright Brothers. If Wilbur and Orville listened to the people we'd sill be traveling to Europe in boats.'
He told me I didn't know what kind of trick I was planning but I was entering a ring with a bull, the horns are long and sharp and that there was no need to come crying to him when I realized it. He would not sign a drop slip and I would 'wear the grades.'
The day the grades came in for the second 6 wk session I dropped by his office to show him how ignorant he was. My GPA dropped to a high C but I walked across that platform on Aug 6th at Littlejohn with my wife, our FIVE children, my sister and six her six children screaming "GO DADDY!"
My advice, not only to you but to everyone here: If you want something that this world refuses to give you 'GO TAKE IT AWAY FROM THEM!"
That's what got me through those summers of hanging sheetrock in skylights when it was 108 degrees outside and probably 135-140 in the skylight. Hold your breath and do your job while you remember that it won't last forever, it's temporary.
Lots of people have done what I did. Millions have done what you're doing.
Yeah, I got more motivation for you. "YOU'LL NEVER DO IT!"

Where are you going to school for this? I assume it's online. Which university since you will be living abroad? Also, what are you studying? Just interested. Thanks, and good luck!
