Lost pressure in my brakes on the Jeep

Aug 15, 2021, 7:15 PM

Figured it was low fluid
Added fluid (after I checked the lint trap) it was LOW
Everything was good for a couple of days
Pressure starts to drop again, have to pump them to stop
That stops after a day-ish
Coasted in to a close car place today as it was only one open on Sunday
Dude says his tech may not be able to handle a 1982 fix (thanks for being up front and honest)
They called and said they couldn’t do the fix and that everything was wrong and wondered how I even got there as the tech almost drove it into the wall

Not sure where to call tomorrow that I won’t have to tow to another county

Hoping some of y’all have ideas for me

For your time:

Keep the 1982 in garage as a classic

Aug 15, 2021, 7:17 PM

Buy a modern vehicle to drive

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s kinda temporary as it being my go to machine

Aug 15, 2021, 7:24 PM

Basically, I am only driving in the same ways a golf cart does. 4 mile radius from home on roads 35 or less not during dark

I get it. Find someone knowledgeable and letvthem

Aug 15, 2021, 7:27 PM

Go over everything with a fine tooth comb. Anything less will be a mistake.

Have you got a sawsall?

Cut a big hole in the floor and stop like Fred Flintstone

Seriously is a hole rusted through

You already told us that

Aug 16, 2021, 10:16 AM

when you said "82 Jeep".

I think they came from the factory with that.

Aug 16, 2021, 11:00 AM

the '79 CJ-5 I had in high school had a rusted through firewall (under the battery) in 1985.

There aren't many 6 year old cars now that would have a rusted through anything, especially if they were southern cars their whole life (like my Jeep that originally came from Hinkle's n Pickens).

I did ignition coils and plugs on my Pilot

Aug 15, 2021, 7:42 PM

Just in time to take it on vacation. Get 15 miles out of town and it is running like shid and engine light on. Limped it home and took other car on vacation. Came home and took back Bosch plugs and put in NGK plugs. Running perfectly now.

my guys, independent small time garage, have worked hard to

Aug 15, 2021, 9:53 PM [ in reply to I did ignition coils and plugs on my Pilot ]

stay up on technology. They actually bought a tool to measure leakage from a head gasket on a Subaru I owned wit a problem. They say they only use OE Toyota plugs on any Toyota. I haven't taken a Honda product there, but I imagine they feel the same. This is a solid garage wit a long-time built up clientel, getting offers from all the aftermarket suppliers. If it were me, I'd go OE, even if a non-OE garage. It's a different world than just running Champions cause their logo was everywhere.

I always wonder why when someone has to fix brakes or replace

Aug 16, 2021, 10:06 AM

spark plugs at 80K or above miles, why they would use anything else than exactly what they are replacing.

Re: Lost pressure in my brakes on the Jeep

Aug 15, 2021, 7:47 PM

You have a problem in one of four areas. In front of the brake booster which is mounted on the firewall just to the right of the steering column sits the master brake cylinder. Check that for leaks.

The other four are located on the inside of your wheels, they are called wheel cylinders. Those five form the hydraulic system of your braking system. Look for leaks at those four locations fluid should be on the inside of your tire just behind the wheel if you have disc brakes all around. If the rear brakes are dumb system the fluid will most show on the inside of your tire where the tire touches the ground.

If there are none then fill your brake fluid reservoir, start the engine, keep the vehicle in neutral or park and pump the brakes.

You will soon see a puddle of brake fluid beneath the vehicle. Above that puddle of fluid you will find a small brake line leaking. None of the issues are really difficult to repair if you have the tools and know a socket from a scoket.

Cat litter is a good absorbent to dry up automobile pee.

This is solid jounge advice

Aug 15, 2021, 9:42 PM

I laughed a little, I learned a little and loved it

I replaced the master cylinder at least 10 yrs ago, maybe even 15-20, so I at least know where that is and on this it’s easy (relatively speaking)

I’ll do the fluid to pump trick tomorrow and see how it goes

What he said ^^

Aug 16, 2021, 9:17 AM [ in reply to Re: Lost pressure in my brakes on the Jeep ]

if it's failing that fast, it should be an easy one to troubleshoot and find.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can't improve on this advice, but

Aug 16, 2021, 10:10 AM [ in reply to Re: Lost pressure in my brakes on the Jeep ]

there's a chance your Jeep didn't have power-assisted brakes. I don't believe they were standard until the last years (85-86 or so), so there might not even be a booster to worry about (which would be good, given the propensity for vacuum leaks on Jeeps of this era)

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Both '82 CJ-7's I owned had power brakes.

Aug 16, 2021, 10:57 AM

Only 1 had power steering. Even the '79 CJ-5 I had in high school had power brakes. It didn't have power steering either.

They all had drums rear/disks front, so technically there were only two wheel cylinders per car.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m now calling your judgement into question.

Aug 16, 2021, 11:25 AM

Primarily because you owned more than one 80’s AMC-era Jeep product.

You and me both.
