Looking for thoughtful answers to SEC and BIG 10 expansion

Even with a 12 team playoff it seems to me that it will be difficult not to have premiere teams in each group with a second tier of “what a fun surprise” for this year’s playoffs and finally teams that will never sniff any sustained success.
Big 10 will have Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, PennState, USC, and I’ll give Washington the edge at this moment to be the premiere teams. UCLA, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa, and I’ll still put Nebraska here as “surprise teams”. I really can’t image the other schools in the Big 10 ever being successful (Rutgers, Maryland,Indiana,Purdue,Northwestern,Minnesota,Illinois).
I know Vanderbilt has been that team for ages that gets praise for rising up every few years as a .500 team but I can’t imagine wanting to stay in a conference where that is really the expectation the league has and it’s not untrue.
I won’t bother with the SEC, I’m sure everybody knows which teams are in each group.
Feels like even after all this there is going to be huge changes unless some schools are truly content with getting scraps that drop fromthe table.
Does anyone else agree or think something different will happen?

I think the ACC will be fortunate if it can get 2 teams in the expanded playoffs.

A conference is not just about a football playoff. Most schools have between 18-22 sports and being in a conference gives them opportunities to play for championships in all of those sports. The administrations at schools like Vanderbilt, Illinois, Maryland etc did not get into their positions to become stupid enough to leave their conference.

What's going to happen is the 12-team playoff, in its current state, will include 3 teams outside the SEC/B1G. -ACC Champ -Big 12 Champ -Highest ranked G5 Champ
Sure, the ACC Champ and Big 12 Champ will get a 1st round bye and be ranked in the Top 4 (again, based on the current rules). But if we go 11-1, or 10-2 and don't win the ACC, or god forbid we make it to the ACC Championship Game but we lose, we're out.
Meanwhile, the 3rd and 4th place SEC/B1G teams who don't even make a championship game will make the Playoff. Rest assured, a 9-3 SEC team will make the Playoff before a 10-2 ACC team that is not the conference champion.
Teams like LSU, UGA, OU, Texas, Penn State, Ohio State, Wash, Oregon, USC, etc. will lay claim to a much tougher schedule. Just look at how the CFP Committee ranked B1G/SEC teams already. And with the new additions next season, it'll only get worse.
So are we better off being in the ACC with a chance to win the conference more often? Most likely, yeah. But unless we go on a run of 6-straight again, we're risking everything.
I will say, I'm liking the idea of the ACC/Big 12/Pac-12 merger more and more...

The current state only lasts for 2 more years.

After that it will be renegotiated. Do you think SEC and B1G will allow a system that has 3 teams not in their two conferences guaranteed bids? I don't.
If ACC and Big 12 still exist the playoff will probably be "12 at large bids." And, lo and behold, all will come form two conferences.

The schools outside of those conferences still have leverage

if they choose to use it. a lot more of "us" than "them".
If the ACC wanted, it could allow Notre Dame to play in the ACC championship game - as leverage

I think most coaches understand we are in a transition...

....period.
Dabo hasn't stated it specifically, but his comment about expansion is, "We all know where this is headed to eventually."
Chip Kelly is being a little more specific saying that all football teams should be "independent" like Notre Dame in football but in a conference (geographically logical) for all other sports.
He just said on espn, "We should have a 64 team conference of P5 teams and a 645 team conference of G5 teams and each conference should have a championship."
Don't know the details, but when it all ends up it will probably be fairly close to what Chip is calling for.
It's just real messy getting from here to there.

Based on this year, ACC will be fortunate to get more than the automatic qualifier in. It's corrupt like the whole sport now is.
