New Story: Dabo Swinney to Alabama? Sorry Paul, not gonna happen and here's why

Dabo Swinney to Alabama? Sorry Paul, not gonna happen and here's why

Paul Finebaum seems to want Dabo Swinney at Alabama. Crimson Tide fans, in all their arrogance, yawn and then sleep soundly knowing that once Nick Saban decides to retire, prodigal son Dabo will return to the loving embrace of his alma mater. After all, who would turn down Alabama? Sorry Paul, not gonna happen. Full Story »

True, but the longer they stay, the more likely they never leave. Frank Howard is buried in Clemson, and one day so will Danny Ford.

Danny was constantly rumored to be heading to Bama in the late 80’s, but he is still here.

... One day, momma will pass, then he needs to be where he wants to be, not where he needed to be for one moment in time. He can always move her closer to him, which people often do, or the money he makes can afford a nice nursing home for her to have the help she'd need. You always plan for your future, not someone else's.

I don't see her leaving Alabama, but she knows how important Clemson is to That Boy so I see her telling him to stay put. Only time will tell. If her health went bad again I could see him going to be close to her, but no other reason.

May 5, 2018, 10:55 AM [ in reply to One day Momma will call. Until then it's all speculation.*** ]

The point of the story is momma can call but that isn't home today. I go to my parents all the time but I be danged if I am going to move back in with them. I have my own family and life and while I love my hometown and parents, where I am today is home. Plus momma knows this is home and as much as Swinney has done for his mom and vise versa I doubt momma would ever put Dabo in that situation. Dabo's mom wants him to be happy above all else plus I doubt the University of Alabama has any strings in the heart of Momma Dabo. I also think Dabo would feel leaving for Bama would be a spit in the face of Terry Don someone Dabo holds in very high regard.

Completely agree with you, David.

May 4, 2018, 7:16 AM

He will have proven everything he needs to prove here at Clemson. But you left out one thing. There's something in these hills. It's what caused Danny to come back and retire here. It's what caused me and Mrs. TigerHawk to retire here instead of our home town. It's something that the Finebaums and other non-Tiger faithful will never understand.

Yep, and Dabo will never rip up his roots at Clemson to go and try to re-establish roots in Bama behind Saban when he has everything at Clemson that he wouldn't have at Bama, and that is a winning FB program that he himself has built at Clemson, So, why would he want what Nick Saban has built at Bama!!! I think that it is smart of Dabo of not closing the door at Bama, but it is a door that Dabo will never walk through.

Some folks just don't seem able to grasp the fact quietly, step-by-step Clemson has become one of the elite programs in the country. Name one program in the nation that boasts better facilities than Clemson. Factor into that one of the most beautiful stadiums in the country, one that seats 80+ thousand fans, with a view of the lake. I recently drove through the Clemson campus for the first time in years since toiling as a student there. I was stunned by the sheer size of the place. How many CU students would switch over to Bama's campus? My guess is few if any. Let me go way out on a limb here. With the advent of TL at QB, I think we are on the verge of a golden age of Clemson football. My only caveat here is whether or not we will recruit the vital hogs up front. Anyone else notice that we also have a commitment from the number one HS QB in the nation? I'll tell you who will notice: WR recruits! Spot the ball.

We can do it the right way, IMHO. Have we been cheating the last several years? And, how do you know Saban has been cheating? I think you can make a claim that he's one of the best coaches in the history of the game. Bear Bryant drew great players to Bama because he was Bear Bryant. Let's give credit where it is due.

Re: I so look forward to the meltdown by bama fans

May 4, 2018, 9:11 AM

If/when it comes time for Saban to hang it up, I'm sure Bama will have a "list" of candidates. I don't think it will be a Dabo or Bust mentality for them. So when Dabo does decline their offer, it will be epic for us but it won't be as epic in the media as I wish it would be. Wow.....that was as clear as mud....hopefully y'all understand what I meant.
To add to the reasons I don't think Dabo would go - he just doesn't fit their style. Sure, he's successful enough. But he and Saban are polar opposites personality and coaching-style speaking. I just don't think him coaching there would pan out in the long run - fans would not tolerate a "down year" of 10 or 11 wins, missing the playoff etc from Dabo because they would perceive his style as being the problem. Just my opinion.....I've been wrong 3 times before. Oops I mean 2 times before. :)

May 4, 2018, 4:11 PM [ in reply to I so look forward to the meltdown by bama fans ]

Great post. Let's all recall that the conventional wisdom was that Brent Venables would surely leave to take a HC job elsewhere. How's that worked out? His son now plays for Clemson. I mean how many millions can anyone spend? If I'm not mistaken, our coaching staff is now the 3rd or 4th highest paid in the nation! How about Bud Foster at Va. Tech? How many HC jobs would you guess that he's turned down? I have no doubt that Va. Tech has made sure that Bud is swimming in enough money to float a yacht through. Why would any sane person leave that kind of situation for the vagaries of a HC job at a school where the fan base is likely already highly irritated?? Just wondering.

Everyone who has replied is forgetting the one person whose opinion matters most! Kathleen loves Clemson!!! She has raised her sons here and made an entirely wonderful legacy of service to the community and state. Why the heck would Dabo and family leave?

I left a place many decades ago and looking back regret having so for many reasons. Dabo makes plenty of money so that won’t be a factor when Bama comes calling. Dabo has built his legacy in Clemson and his roots run deeply.

Go Tigers!

May 4, 2018, 4:27 PM

I totally agree. And, what if we win another national championship? I mean I'm not getting on some kind of magic carpet ride, but we've got to have a shot, barring major injuries. Of course, we have to show up and play, but I think that Dabo and Brent are very much aware of the dangers of over-confidence. While we're at it, that away game at Texas A&M really scares me. Anyone know what they are supposed to have this year? Man, we get through that early on, and look out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll do you one better...

May 4, 2018, 8:49 AM

.... not only is Dabo not going anywhere, when he finally gets close to retiring, there will be wild speculation about whether the former Clemson assistant coach who is head coach at Bama at that point is going to defect and come back to replace him at Clemson.

He doesn't see himself as a head coach. He sees himself as a builder of men and he has set up the machinery to do it at Clemson. Why would you walk away from factory when it is humming at maximum capacity?

The only reason he leaves is if someone breaks his machine or there is something so much bigger than changing 25 lives a year that he can't say no.

He's never leaving for football and he's never going to get bored of seeing that light come on in the young men in his charge.

What folks don't get is that Coach Swinney

May 4, 2018, 8:54 AM

is at a point emotionally and spiritually where he is just comfortable in his own skin with who he is and how he lives his life so he's going to "look comfortable" anywhere.

It's why recruits and their parents love him, he's comfortable sitting on their couch.

It's why people approach him on the street, they sense he's comfortable talking to anyone.

It's why he's the interview everyone wants, he's comfortable in front of the camera.

Heck, he looked pretty comfortable at the White House when the team visited. Does PF think he's going to be President?

Great piece, I loved it. I don't even want to think of Dabo leaving but to play devils advocate here I am trying to picture myself in a similar position he might be in. Having graduated from Clemson and it meaning so much to me, if I was a college football coach and I built a certain program to the top and it could compete with the likes of Clemson...and then the opportunity for me to coach at Clemson arises, it would be so hard to turn down. But maybe that's because Clemson is unlike any other school

Nostalgia for a place that has a lot of meaning

May 4, 2018, 12:47 PM

is different than moving there and making your life there. I hear what you're saying, but I think the other factors - quality of life, family, people, etc. all matter a lot.

I love Clemson University. It is really special to me, as I grew up going to campus and am also an alumnus. But if I were offered a job in Clemson in my field, I would have zero interest in taking it. It's a great place to visit, but living there doesn't offer me nearly as much as what I have where I currently live in terms of what I'm looking for. I imagine it is the same for Dabo and his family when it comes to returning to Alabama.

Wasn't he fired at Alabama? And didn't he and his mom live in pretty dire straits while he was there? How pleasant can his memories be of the place? Isn't the campus clogged in the downtown area of the city? My guess is that the main attraction there currently is Saban, and once he leaves, the allure will fade. I m ay be wrong, but I'm far less concerned with what they do as compared to what we do. I tend to think that time is on our side.

Right on David. I said many of the same things a few days ago when TNET reported Finebaum's comments. Clemson is Dabo's home. Bama is decades old news.

I find the thought refreshing that a Sabanless Tide will likely slide into just another team. Would do the Tide fans good to eat a bite of humble pie.

Leaves Clemson.

Saban retires and his replacement over a 4 or 5 year period misses the play-offs a few times and perhaps goes 9-3 one season ( even losing to Allbarn a few times ) .

Then they approach Dabo to replace the coach who took Bama down a notch .

By the time that happens though Dabo will have won at least one more Natty....he will be the coach that all Clemson coaches will be compared to a 100 years from now. That legacy can't be bought.

People have prematurely buried Bama before. Saban is maybe the best coach In the history of college football , but my school has also won 17 national championships under five coaches. Frankly, I’m glad that a 1 or 2 loss Season is seen is not good enough.
I’m proud of the tradition, Thrilled that more players are graduating, humbled by CNS and Miss Terry’s generosity and can’t wait for the next season
Clemson is probably the fastest growing powerhouse and deserves every bit of praise that you get. The comments posted here on what you’ve accomplished are spot on. There’s no need for “humble pie” anti-Bama focused shots. That’s for little brothers,

Re: New Story: Dabo Swinney to Alabama? Sorry Paul, not gonna happen and here's why

May 4, 2018, 12:22 PM

I agree that Dabo’s roots in Clemson are very deep and don’t think that would be a good career move, mainly because he can do at Clemson everything he could do at Alabama but it would have his own authorshiip.
As far as comments posted hear about “the way they do things at Bama“ and “that arrogant crowd“ I couldn’t disagree more. Sure, Saban is a crusty curmudgeon and not comfortable with the press. But if you look past the cameras your find his story is as captivating as Dabo‘s. Maybe without the poverty but definitely with a love for teaching and helping people in life. Watch both coaches on the sidelines and you’ll see a lot of similarities. Yes, the teams personalities are different and Clemson seems to play a lot looser. But that doesn’t mean Alabama’s businesslike approach is wrong. It tends to come out when the team feels disrespected. That was the difference in the sugar bowl and will probably be a difference maker for Clemson if the two teams play next year. By the way manufacturing disrespect is something Dabo does as well as Nick
A lot of Alabama fans are Fairweather once drawn by decades of success. If Clemson continues to win you will pick up your own of that sort. Don’t judge but entire Fanbase by the actions of a few. The Alabama people I know are just as fine as the Clemson people you write about and we feel about our state the same way you do about yours. Neither is better, it’s all in the eye of the beholder .
Roll Tide and sweet home Alabama

A whole lot, and I mean a whole lot would have to happen ...

May 4, 2018, 1:31 PM

for Dabo to leave.
1. Clemson Administration would have to be apathetic/indifferent towards him and his athletes (Not likely to happen within the next 10 years).
2. His kids will have had to graduate from Clemson. (We at least get 4 years)
3. Alabama would have to have a "buffer" coach between him and Saban that under performed and was fired. (Not 100% necessary, but I cannot see him going to Alabama right after Saban)
4. Alabama would still have to want him, which means he would have to be consistently considered elite at the time of the hiring, and a big name in coaching. (most likely of all the conditions)

I just do not think all of these things will be in place in the next 10 years. And this is the only way he leaves IMHO.

hometowns and states for other climes for various reasons.

Although the lure of family and old friends can be strong, most of us have built new lives in our current locations, which have become our new homes. And it would be extremely difficult to leave, regardless of the reasons.

We can understand why Dabo would think the same way.

Has anyone else seen the video of the mouse who faced down a full--grown leopard and feasted on his food? One of the funniest things I've seen in ages. We need to recruit that Ol' boy to Clemson. Can a player with four feet play in the ACC?

It's not happening, and you can bet your retirement on it.

May 4, 2018, 2:29 PM

The only way it happens is if the BOT and FUTURE presidents turn on him. Dabo is a brand unto himself. He's WAY more than just wins in football. He's an ambassador for all that is right and good about sports and humanity. Alabama doesn't care about that. They just want to use him as far as the wins will take them. He isn't walking away from what he's built at Clemson just for money. And for the 'nostalgia, I wanna go home' crowd, there are a lot of not so good memories in Alabama, too. If you've never heard him tell the story of becoming head coach at Clemson and the divine intervention involved, you need to. It'll give you some insight into his mindset. If he goes there, it won't be for any of the reasons their fans, Stinkbaum, or anyone else thinks. The only thing they offer is more money and history. Dabo is building his own history outside the shadow of any of those things. I think that's super important to him.

Many have left Alabama to come to the paradise that is Clemson, never to return.

Walter Merritt Riggs (born January 24, 1873 in
Orangeburg, South Carolina, was the president of Clemson University from 1910 to 1924 and the "father of Clemson football" coaching the first football team for what was then Clemson College. Riggs graduated from the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (now Auburn University) with a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1892. Record 6–3

William Martin Williams (September 1877 – March 30, 1932) served as Clemson University head football coach in 1897. Williams was a graduate of Auburn. Record 2–2

John Abner Penton born in Coosa County, Alabama served as the head football coach at the Clemson University for one season in 1898, compiling a record of 3–1. Penton attended the University of Virginia and Auburn University. Record 3–3–1

John William Heisman, left Auburn to coach Clemson 1900 - 1903. Record 19–3–2, an .833 percentage, the best in Clemson football history. In four seasons, he had three SIAA titles

Frank J. Howard, born in Barlow Bend, Alabama, played college football for Alabama. After a career-ending injury, Howard joined the staff at Clemson College and became head coach in 1940. Howard coached the Clemson Tigers for 30 years, amassing the 15th most wins of any college football coach. He led Clemson to ten bowl games, an undefeated season in 1948, and several top-20 rankings during his tenure as head coach.

Hootie Ingram, born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was Clemson HC 1970–1972

Charlie Pell, born in Albertville, Alabama, was Clemson HC 1977–1978

Danny Lee Ford born in Gadsden, Alabama, was Clemson HC 1978–1989. Record 122–59–5 Won 1 NC and 5 ACC Championships

Tommy Pearce Bowden born in Birmingham, Alabama, was Clemson HC 1999–2008. Record 90–49.

William Christopher "Dabo" Swinney born in Birmingham, Alabama. Clemson HC 2008–present. Record 101–30. 1 National (2016), 4 ACC (2011, 2015–2017), 6 ACC Atlantic Division (2009, 2011–2012, 2015–2017)

These are the exact things I've been telling friends that were worked up about it. Glad to hear my thoughts confirmed by someone a lot closer to the program, & to Dabo.

Alabama's success will be their undoing

May 5, 2018, 2:13 PM

When it comes to unsuccessfully trying to hire Dabo... Alabama is the benchmark for College football. If Dabo was to return to Bama and win a National Championship, so what? Big Deal. It's been done there numerous times before.. it's already built. At Clemson however , Dabo is building his own Power House Dynasty.. What Saban is to Bama, Bobby Bowden was Florida State, Dabo is too Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well written Hood and no doubt from your heart and gut

May 5, 2018, 2:39 PM

You make so many great points. Still, because I am a few years older and likely more cynical than you, I would respond by stating the human condition is that ego and hubris come into play far too often. If Dabo continues to grow this juggernaut at Clemson and grow his "Dabo brand", then he will become more and more appealing to the Bama faithful. We can agree on that. At the same time, there will come a season or two where Clemson takes a small dip, possibly losing to the clucks, and Dabo will take some serious heat. And Dabo is human, and he will be chapped that he is not universally appreciated for all he has done for this beautiful little university who gave him his shot at greatness. And he will weigh the tremendous payday and may consider that it is time for another challenge, and an opportunity to give one of his assistants a deserved opportunity to be Clemson's head coach. Enjoy the present because time does funny things. Go Tigers!

Bama would be a rebuilding project. It would take 4-5 years to cycle out the Saban players and another 5 years to build it. It took 10 yrs to get to where we are today. Plus Bama is not interested in doing it the Dabo way. I would say the answer of Dabo leaving is a hard no!
