I live near Hwy 11 and unfortunately it’s coming this way. I know houses (older and need a lot of updating) getting sold upwards of $325,000, with a couple of acres on Hwy 11 North. Yankees and ATL people coming in and throwing cash at families whose parents/grandparents have died and left them with the house. It’s just pathetic. Northerners are buying land up here sight unseen.

Also, drove from Clemson to Anderson last week….you talk about development and throwing up slab houses left and right. Wow.

It’s 1866 on a train outside Charleston. A lady obviously upset, runs up to a Charleston gentleman and protests “that Yankee just offered me $20 if I’d sleep with him, do something!” The Lowcounty man rises and shoots the man. “Thank you for defending my honor” the lady exclaimed. “I had to” the gentleman replied in his distinctive brogue. “We can’t have Carperbaggers coming down to Charleston and doubling the price of everything!”

My point is that all of us come from families that moved here at some point. So just because some moved more recently, we should boycott them? The funny part is that all the new influx has made this area's economy much stronger than most of the rest of the country, so that we can weather downturns. noticeably worse than in NC, GA, and FL. There shouldn't be any section of I-26, I-95 or I-85 in the State with fewer than 6 lanes (3 on each side) based on the traffic that is always congesting those roads. Yet significant stretches of all these major arteries are bumper to bumper because SC has not kept up their road maintenance/road size to keep pace with traffic patterns.

PS... While I applaud SC's effort to widen I-85 from Spartanburg to the NC State line - whoever is overseeing this project should have a boot kicked up their a.s.s. because it should not take more than 7 years to lay 29 miles of road. The Romans overseeing conquered slaves cutting and laying rock by hand could have finished that road by now...

to push the narrative that Democratic states are bad Republican states are good. If blue states are so filled with crime then why would someone there flee to crime riddled South Carolina, just look at Columbia, North Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and many of the crime riddled rural areas in the state. HBO just released a documentary about the drug infestation of Pickens county: https://www.investigationdiscovery.com/show/operation-undercover-guns-drugs-in-carolina-investigation-discovery-atve-us

I love South Carolina, but we have a lot of negative things to address like crime, excessive drug use, poor public schools, being number one in domestic violence, terrible roads and too many traffic accidents. That Fox News article is completely inaccurate. There may be a few parts of the states that out of states are moving to, but there isn’t some large influx. And some of the out of staters are from fellow Southern states.

And one thing is for sure Henry McMaster isn’t doing a d amn thing to address the negative issues affecting the state.

I see this stuff all the time. And contend with it professionally. If you're not growing, you're dying.
There's is no way to just stop and keep things are they are, let alone were. The very things that you think are wonderful about the place you live are the very same things that draw others to want to live there. So, the problem isn't growth or development in and of itself, but the lack of acknowledging it and planning for it. To all you town planners or planning board members out there, saying no is not a plan.

Developers don't spend millions just to see what happens. There is no "if you build it, they will come". It is, believe it or not, market driven. People are moaning and groaning here because they are building a Target. Target doesn't just decide to build a store one day. And a town doesn't just decide to build one. The numbers have to work. Cracker Barrel decides on their locations based solely on traffic count.

Every complaint I hear about our area usually begins with the phrase "When I moved here...." Well, guess what people were saying before you moved here? I moved to NC around 25 years ago. At that time, only 1 in 4 people were native North Carolinians. Not sure what it is now.

So if you really, really want to stop growth and development:

Make your town as horrible as you can imagine.
Have terrible schools
Ensure that it is a very unsafe place to live
Do not, under any circumstances, have any events, festivals, concerts or other activities that would unnecessarily invite potential residents to your town.
Do not repair any of the infrastructure. Maybe even go out and dig a few potholes.
Make sure there no places where anyone can earn a decent living.

We just moved to Six Mile to be on Lake Keowee last year (just moved from Northern Greenville County), and it's a breath of fresh air from what we had gotten used to. The traffic we had almost 24 hours a day before seems to be gone here after 5:30. I bet it was extremely quiet and peaceful before, but it's definitely better than most have it I think.
