Limestone University

3

Aug 4, 2023, 4:49 PM

My son is a rising junior in HS and wants to play college lacrosse. He received an invitation today from the head lacrosse coach at Limestone to attend a prospect day this Fall. I am well aware that they have one of the top D2 lacrosse programs in the country but am not familiar with the academics and culture of the university. Are any of you familiar with Limestone and be willing to share your opinion?

We are just starting his recruiting journey and I am trying to do as much homework as possible on each institution of interest. Thank you in advance!

My Grandson looked at them but chose LMU. He received a partial scholarship as a Face-off guy plus academic scholarships. He moves in August 10th. Not sure of Limestone's academics but their Lacrosse program has been very successful.

@colemanfan husband is head coach at Belmont Abby. Maybe she could give some insight on teams. My Grandson is an active Baptist so this Catholic school gave him pause.

Glad to hear your grandson made a choice and will be playing for LMU! Wish him the best of luck!! I do not blame your grandson for looking elsewhere due to his faith. That will always come first 💜 I’m a Baptist and my husband is catholic so it makes it interesting lol.

Weakish academics. Quality people though. It's Gaffney, so it's not a great college experience for the town. He will just get really into lacrosse and school. Worth checking out though.

I should have said, "Perceived weakish academics". I think in the end they are all similar. I just meant how it is looked. The actually classes might be great.

In past years Limestone W lacrosse has been competitive and finished DII runner up. My sons fiancé attended undergrad and loved it.

The only thing I left in Gaffney was casualties.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

My freshman year in band

We did band camp at Limestone. That was 1982. Was nice then but truthfully haven't been back since. I heard it was nice though.

I have cousin graduated Limestone…..

and then went to USC pharmacy school. He was also on golf scholarship.

So it worked out ok for him.

ETA: I will add, the most important part of any college is how is it going to help you earn a living. If you plan to be a teacher Limestone is probably pretty good. Or use it as step to another level like law or pharmacy, etc.

But there is not much market for a small school liberal arts grad.

Unfortunately they’ve made some really poor financial decisions. I’d really investigate that before I made any decisions.

Exactly what I was going to say. My husband and I both went to Limestone and he was a member of one of their Championship teams. If I can offer you some advice, please look into Limestone’s financial issues. If I’m not mistaken, there is articles about this if you want to look it up. Basically to sum it up, lots of money (millions) went missing and people have been getting axed left and right. Good luck in his search and congrats on the offer. If you need recruiting advice, shoot me a T-mail. Happy to ask my husband who is a collegiate coach.

As a Gaffney HS graduate in 95 and a Clemson grad in 98, I’ll speak a little to the town of Gaffney.

Gaffney is a smaller town (depends upon your frame of reference I suppose) with a population just under 15K or so. The town and Cherokee County are fairly typical of what one expects to find in a smaller, rural Southern area. Lots of good people with a more country approach (redneck to many). Fishing, hunting, Cherokee Speedway, etc. 🤣 Not a lot in the way nightlife with clubs or an anything normal to a college town.

Spartanburg SC is 20-25 minutes away and has little bit more. Greenville is 40-45 minutes away as well. Both are larger cities, and offer more, but probably not a strong consideration either.

Imo, the surrounding area is a big factor when considering college. Academics and the institution itself are probably 1 & 2.

What little I do know of Limestone is that it is small-both campus size and number of students.

If these factors sound appealing, then I’d consider scheduling a tour of Limestone.

Hope these minor tidbits are helpful. Good luck!

Great summary. I grew up in Gaffney, graduated in 85, Clemson in 92. Gaffney is full of “good people” but may not be appealing to some wanting the full college experience. Gaffney has its share of trouble makers, as does any town.

Graduated From Limestone and I'm From Gaffney

3

I left to live my dream of living at the beach here in Florida.

Small school/small town. Since Gaffney has virtually nothing do to, it is very hard to get into trouble. I would venture to say most kids who attend Limestone drive to Spartanburg, Greenville, Charlotte, or even Clemson to find some fun. While I loathed living there (maybe because I grew up in that town), I do miss it.

The Lacrosse team is usually outstanding and the football team is slowly coming along.

IMO, check out the school and the town.

If you have any questions shoot me a TM
