Clemson defense.

Wes Goodwin has a great defensive mind. He's still honing his craft. He has the tools to be a great D coordinator. However, Dabo knows he needs the best staff possible to get Clemson back to the top. He fixed the Offense with Matt Luke and Garret Riley. If Wes and Co. don't end up near or inside the top 25 defensively...I'm thinking a change is gonna come. That said ..I like our defense and I think they are getting better and better. In fact ..the best is yet to come.
Right now Total Defense (Opp yards per game) Clemson is 38th in the country. Not great, but not terrible. And we all know how many garbage yards the back ups surrendered.

So one year outside the top 25 and you think Dabo is dropping him?

when a good percentage of points and yards are against first and second year players who play in blowouts? I think a lot of you are bored and just trying to find something to talk about after 5 straight dominating wins and an off week ahead.

Calling them bored is being kind to the less fortunate among us. Thank you for that!

Agree. Offense is performing over but the defense is performing under. It’s a good thing we played better D the 3 previous years to carry our offense but now the offense is carrying the D. Not sold on Wes yet.

But Brent was probably the best of top 10 I’ve seen in college ball last 15 years, especially at Clemson.
Saying,..his style, intensity, drive, game planning, knowledge, brain, mind-set, on the field connection & relationship with players made him a coach that couldn’t be replaced.
Also, imho our D is not as good as forecasted b/4 season nor was it last year either.
Their national ratings are way down overall even if you add the junk playing time involving 2nd & 3rd stringers..
And I’ve afraid they may prove to be our Achilles heel vs tough O’s, like with UGa, but again our O strung them out to dry vs Dawgs for 2 quarters with continuous 3 & outs.

But didn’t BV accept big plays and scores by the other team, playing a high risk game with blitzes from everywhere? That was maddening at times but we trusted him although there were games where we would lose when (was it) running QBs would beat us(?). Maybe it was very accurate QBs that could find an open man under duress.
I’m old and all the seasons are running together.

if the offense was ranked 38th nationally? And He was playing first and second year players in blowouts a good portion of 2nd halves?

Defense has been solid but not stellar but it's still early. I think there is a lot of room for improvement. The test to see how good this defense is comes against Louisville and Pitt. Both good offenses.

I know transitive property is usually not very accurate, but Virginia only allowed loserville to score 24, and we doubled that against them. I think starting D will be able to contain them for the most part. Notre Dame also did a decent job of holding their offense in check. Need to watch film of those two games and see what worked.

Secondary has to step up or they will be badly exposed against better QBs. DL needs to help them with a lot of pressure. BV was the master of the timely blitz…

I don't think our starting D is quite as good as forecasted yet, but our numbers are highly skewed by garbage time stats against young backups. Outside of Georgia game, our starting D hasn't really allowed much more than about 14 points. All the extra points are, again, in garbage time against very inexperienced players. I think they're a solid unit, but still have room for improvement. I think they will get it together.

As Corso says, not so fast my friend. Our offense may or may not be better because we beat App State and the ACC teams that are ranked 17, 16, 14, 13 and 12 in yards per game on defense. Translation, we will know more after we play slightly defenses when we play Louisville, Virginia Tech and Pitt.

But last year we couldn’t even score against the bad defenses so we definitely have improved. Now, by how much, follows your conclusion about how we perform against better defenses.

Hires like Austin, Goodwin, Streeter, Conn, Grisham, Spiller, etc prove that's not true. Thankfully we've made massive upgrades with Riley and Luke.

I think Porkchop is doing a fine job. When we start facing some real competition (& in the CFP) will tell us much more.
I like BV's attacking style better, but I wouldn't want to get rid of Porkchop unless BV or someone very similar was available to us.

UGA is the only team with an offensive pulse and we all know what happened there.
I'm also not sure where you're getting the CLemson D is ranked 38th in Total Defense. NCAA site is showing CLemson's Total D at #53 and Scoring D at #61
